    Gone but never forgotten RIP Aretha Franklin, Fred Berry aka Mr Penguin, Greg Pope aka Cambellock Jr, Don Campbell aka Campbellock and Adolfo Quiñones aka Shabba Doo. The legacies of you all still live on.

    Aretha Louise Franklin’s speaking voice is as beautiful as her singing voice. Very creative way in announcing the nominees. Her elegance and sophistication represented black womanhood in a very positive way.

    This was by FAR the best award show performance/nominations announcement I've EVER seen! The audience forgot where they were and went AFTER it...and how about that band?!!!

    They should've given her a Grammy for that run at 2:46! Beautiful!

    As evident in the video, disco sure had its own style and place in music. Aretha certainly sounded and looked great here, although most started seeing her and many others as aging soul singers at this point in her career. Thank god she was able to come back and reemerge as THE singer, and performer she is known for, Aretha Franklin.

      I agree. If you look at Grammy history in the late 70’s, she lost to other female artist in the R&b category. It would be seven years since 1975 she won the Female R&b award.

      @@beugene81 yep man. I think Natalie Cole broke Arethas winning streak and there was a sort of riff between them for years due to some reporters saying that Natalie was the new Queen of Soul. Natalie soon struggled too after she drifted deeper into drugs and eventually made a come back too.

      In fact, Aretha was not nominated that year. She was nominated the following year and lost to Natalie Cole and then again to Thelma in 1978 Houston and Donna Summer in 1979. She was not nominated in 1980. In 1981, Aretha lost to Stephanie Mills. Finally, in after six years, she won the award.

      It seems as there was a new crop of Soul Divas breaking out after 1975: Chaka Kahn, Natalie Cole, Donna Summer, Stephanie Mills, Teena Marie, and Minnie Riperton.
      Dionne Warwick made huge comeback in 1979 thanks to Clive Davis CEO of Arista Records. When Aretha left Atlantic Records
      to go to Arista Records, her career started to revive.

    Very nice, thanks for posting. Does anybody remember another award show with dancers? I seem to recall a show where she and the dancers came from stage right and she started off with a loud, high note. Possibly 1973? Thanks.

      I realised my mistake this morning - so I will correct it may not be able to do anything about the title on the actual clip - but I will correct it on the title - 1975 :) Thank you

      Hi Jason, yes you are right, I didn't realise my mistake till this morning, definitely NOT 1978 - I can correct it on the description but not sure if I can on the title I attached, youtube does have a video editor now so maybe I can change the title description on the video by clipping it out - thank you :)

    • @sashineb.2114

      I think it's 1976. Van McCoy's "The Hustle" was popular in 1975. Plus, Aretha looks much like as she did on the cover of the "You" album (with the hair in that style).

    • @MrsMattMurphy
      @MrsMattMurphy  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes you are correct, pretty sure it is 1975 - I didn't realise that till after I uploaded it last night and saw Aretha in the footage, definitely not 78 - thanks for that :)

      @MrsMattMurphy  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes it is 76 lol looks like I have to change the description again when I'm back on my laptop I had no description on this video which I've had for yes and didn't think much about the time frame tbh thanks for your help :)
