  • Scraesdon Fort, near the village of Antony, is one of several forts in South East Cornwall which formed part of the ring of forts surrounding Plymouth to protect Plymouth Sound and, in particular, the naval dockyard of Devonport from enemy naval attack. They were built as a result of a decision in Lord Palmerston's premiership to deter the French from attacking naval bases in the south of England.
    Aerial view
Scraesdon Fort was designed in 1859 by Captain (later Maj General) William Crossman,[1] and was built by F Roach and Company, Plymouth.
Defensive caponier in the ditch around the fort
    East wall and barrack chimneys
It was completed at a cost of £137,000. It is constructed in the Land Front, polygonal, near octagonal format. It has a dry ditch, and was designed to have twenty-seven 7-inch breech-loading guns on the ramparts.[2] By 1893 it mounted one 64 Pounder Rifled Muzzle Loading Guns, eight 7-inch Rifled Breech Loading (RBL) gun, two 32 Pounder Smooth Bore Breech Loading (SBBL) guns and two 5-inch Breech Loading guns.[3]
The upper level is 254 ft above mean sea level (AMSL) and the lower level is 173 feet AMSL.
The fort was used by the MOD as a training barracks, but it is currently empty, derelict and overgrown. It was[when?] used to train Royal Navy Artificer Apprentices from HMS Fisgard and HMS Raleigh; it is occasionally used now by Royal Marine Commandos recruits as part of their final exercise, as well as being used by local Army Reserve units. The fort is also used for airsoft events on an ad hoc basis. It was Grade II listed in 1968.[4]
A military railway. used from 1893 to 1903, connected the fort with the River Lynher at Wacker Quay, near St. Germans. It also provided a link to the main fort on the Rame peninsula at Fort Tregantle. The railway ran underneath the metal bridge and down a gradient, then went underneath the current A374 road, and alongside Wacker Quay. The locomotive shed was extant on the quayside until the late 2000s,when it was removed by Cornwall CC, who had been using it as a highways depot. and other remnants of the railway can also be seen . There was also an extensive marshalling area next to the east wall of the fort.

Stunning 'Pink Floyd' music with the Droneh footage. Thank you.
For your interest, compare this with Landguard Fort, Felixstowe, Suffolk. Then compare withe fort near Statue of Liberty and then Alcatraz. So many common features and I suspect the brick work at Plymouth to be beyond the modern household brick, the very robust 'military' grade brick. The floors and steps look rather modern compared to the stone block walks. Interesting construction patterns in this.

@@mickeyfubar69 I have suggested the slits we are told were for guns to shoot through were really a kind of filter. The structures are always near water so I feel the original purpose is more to act as a dam/filtering machine to reclaim land. Of course it still leaves the question of how these could have been built. Certainly the entire African coast have these approx. 600km apart.

@@mickeyfubar69 I don't know if you are familiar with the RV series Oak Island but if you see the box drain idea shown in this, I feel this is a similar function to these star forts. Personally I would take the TV series with a pinch if salt as the story of a retired postman and his brother does not quite ring true.

  • @theenergyflowtribejamesbro1302

Fascinating. The rock in the tunnels is most likely petrified mud or mineral deposit. See Mother Shipton 's Cave where minerals will petrifying almost anything in a very short space of time. The engineering and quality of the structure is most likely the reason this remains as cost of excavation would be beyond any worthwhile gain. Interesting 'star fort' plan can be seen in the aerial images. The question is how and when was this really built.

Having spent 22 years in the navy, and several stints at Scraesdon, I can assure you that very much like ranges, estates used in WW2, and other MOD historic sites, the public are not excluded just for spite.
Public Liability and the consequences of personal injury feature high on the reasoning, and the perhaps more obvious trend of 'explorers' to vandalise places many of which are in good order because of their being protected.
Scraesdon has, however, been used for airsoft games, but was also in regular use for marine and naval trainees for 'Murder In The Dark' exercises with the use of low-grade munitions, such as flare-traps, blank-firing exercises, and benign booby-traps of various kinds.
These sites are obviously fascinating because they almost always indicate tunnels, long-gone engineering and architecture, and distinct possibility of discovering something hidden, unique, and newsworthy.
The Dover tunnels show that when such places fall out of use and are just too big to actively secure, they are damaged and abused, and often taken way beyond commercially viable restoration.
'Keep Out' isn't an invitation, but as some of these MOD locations are in the hands of MOD archaeologists in the historical branch, it is possible to get permissions for active sites rarely seen, like a couple of gems in the Royal Dockyards and Whale Island.

Re: 48:00 . At the time you happened to visit this location and shoot the video, I was on the toilet with very severe constipation. During my intense pushing I let off some high pitched squeals and unfortunately it looks like they flooded the radius of the UK due to the intense energy used during the pushing, which is the cause of the strange noises at 48mins into the video. I apologise and my bowels have since returned to normality, so I don’t think this will happen again

For a start it’s not in “Plymouth” which is in England. It’s next to Anthony Village which is in Cornwall. When I was a child I would play there with my friends. Decades later the MOD re adopted it for close combat training. It is in reality very boring as the basement is not vast. When it was in use, Weir Quay on the Tamar river used to supply it with ammunition.
