As of 2024, you indeed need to win 1x with every deck you want to keep from the "Starter Deck Duels", but you're free to try as much as you like. Source: I'm a starter and finally managed to unlock them.
I thought this until I finished my quest for "quick drafts". After that it appeared all the "starter deck duels" decks were unlocked. Even those I did not win with.

I didn't play any draft yet, after unlocking all the starter decks [by winning once with each] i stuck to playing standard / alchemy ranked for now.. appeared simple enough for me to be able to build a deck without just copying somebody else's deck, so that's nice.

I really want to get into MTG, but it is so overwhelming when you don't know anything. The only card I can name is Black Lotus, and even then I am not 100% confident that's even a card, lol. I see that this game is turning 30 years old this year. It's super intimidating to even just try getting into it. When a card game starts it is easy to get into because there are only so many cards, but I have to take into consideration 30 years of card releases...
Black Louts is definitely a card, and the game is 30 years old... HOWEVER... you don't need to know 30 years of MTG cards to be able to start getting into it. You can just play Standard on MTG Arena, where the oldest cards are currently 2 years old. The game gives you a gentle introduction and allows you to get to know different rules and mechanics a little at a time. Give it a try and let me know how it goes :)
the different cards dont matter, dont even try to memorize them unless you actively enjoy doing so. whats most important is what the cards actually do, each card has a general purpose as to what it accomplishes, and these things are very similar from card to card, just know the difference between instants and sorceries, creatures, and artifacts, honestly the best way to start is simply to find a group, or a friend who plays and play a couple games with a premade deck while they carry you around a bit. the tutorial on mtg arena is also pretty decent for a basic understanding.
i’m new and what i’ve learned is to just build a deck(or copy) that has some synergies you like. then just go play other people. you’ll learn by seeing how your chosen mechanics work or don’t work against other people, and how other peoples mechanics work or don’t work as well.
I came back to Magic after being away since 2005. The tutorial was a huge help getting back into my favorite game.

First time I've reached platinum in rankeds using only starter decks, playing like 2-3 games a day. Personally I dont care about rank, I just wanted to finish quests :> Those decks are good enough! I didnt create my own deck yet, just building a collection. This is what I call enjoyment
I'm surprised you can get that far with the starter decks. You only need a win rate of over 33% to get to Platinum eventually, but to get there in 2-3 games per day, you must be doing really well with them 👍
Maybe I'm not entirely accurate about the number of games. For like a 1 day a week I play few more, but usually it's around 3

liked the white deck the most and have been leaning into Angel cards. Even got some Historic Angels that are freakin busted against my friend. Even though I can't play them in ranked.

I've just begun playing, and I've got the hang of battling. My main struggle lies in creating my own deck.
I've got a few videos on building decks, and there are lots of other guides online. Building a deck can be complicated in a way, so there's no rush to have to build your own if you've just started playing. Just copy decklists from online to start with until you get used to the different deckbuilding strategies and experiment after that.

Hey, i just started playing MTG yesteday because i'm deeply interested in LOTR cards. Can i make a Nazgul deck with wild cards and play into normal games to start my aventure in Sparky ranked? Thanks, loved your content!

When you go to create a new deck, it defaults to Alchemy-legal cards for some reason. You can change the deck type to Historic or Explorer, and then you should see it is craftable.
Hey man, I just wanted to thank you! I've just started arena and I built the mono-red deck you suggested. I'm having fun, and I've made it up to silver ranks tonight after fiddling around a bit. Do you have any suggestions for sub ins to deal with all the toxic decks that I seem to be running into? I feel like I have a bad matchup with them as of now.
Glad I could help! Which kind of toxic deck do you face more often? If it's the green/white toxic deck, then I would make sure you take out their Slaughter Singer as soon as you see one, the toxic 2 really adds up, as does the +x/+x bonus it gives them. The best way to deal with toxic is usually to kill them before they kill you, so only take out their creatures as much as you need to survive, otherwise just hit them as hard as you can with everything to race them.

Hello, I'm new to MTG Arena as well. I happened to follow your guide but somehow didn't get the 600 gems for free. Does anyone know why? Was that limited?
It's possible that they changed the new player experience again, although they haven't announced anything. The only way I could know for sure is to make another new account and run through the start to see what happens. Have you done all the new player modes completely?
Yo thanks for the answer! And yes I have played through the whole of the new player modes, even tried some drafts and ranked up to platinum by now. Still haven't received the gems. I thoroughly enjoy the game even without the gems though haha, so as far as I'm concerned, you wouldn't need to create yet another account just to make sure :) Let's just assume they must've changed it. On top of that many of the free pack codes also didn't work for me and a friend of mine, since the game was telling us that the code had "already been used", which actually wasn't the case because it was the first time for us typing them in.

I got two days on the game and the mono aggro deck works really well, video was helpful. Is there any ways to improve the red mono deck you shared? I don't mind throwing some mythic or rare wildcards for it since I'll play Magic rather casually
The next rares I would add to upgrade that version of the deck would be either Squee or Thundering Raiju. I also like at least one copy of Shivan Devastator for a late game evasive hasty surprise 👍
You could probably take out the Electrostatic Infantry, I like them and the trample is useful, but they don't have haste so they feel quite slow compared to other options.
I was hoping you'd cover how to use the wild cards, since I couldn't figure out a way to search for cards I don't own.

I'm playing for the first time. On my 3rd game against Sparky, she enchanted one of my creatures before returning it to my hand, then added an aura to their own creature that permanently tapped it. That's it, she did nothing else the whole match
There's something really disappointing about playing with Sparky, it really doesn't know how to play so it makes the games really frustrating.

Trying to build a mostly solo green (a few white cards, namely botanical brawler) with lots of stacking counters and adding trample. Any cards I should specifically be looking for?
I'm working on a deck just like that now. There are lots of green cards that would work great with Botanical Brawler. Gala Greeters, Kami of Whispered Hopes, Ozolith, Quirion Beastcaller, Defiler of Vigor, Kodama (gives everything trample!), Gaea's Gift, Jugan Defends the Temple is pretty good too. Lots of options!
Can I ask why I'm not able to play a rank mode even though I completed the sparky's challenge? Is it because I haven't made my own deck?
I know this is probably a very frequently asked question; I want to main green and originally based on learning about the colors I wanted to play green/white, but a few videos(which seemed meme based) said green/white is not a very good strategy. I also really liked green/black. Is there a specific one I should go for? Is there a meta that favors on or the other? Would it be viable to even build a dual color deck if i’m new, or should I stick to mono green and gradually build up to mixing black and white into my green deck? I don’t need the most meta, most specific tips, just a general direction to go for my goals so I don’t go into ranked later on and realize I wasted my time building a janky strategy. Thanks for any advice.
Mono green has been a pretty weak colour for a while now in Standard, and I think good green decks often use more rares because they usually play big threats as their main strategy.
Green/white enchantments has been pretty good for a while and not too rare-heavy but is rotating out of Standard soon, so not much worth investing in right now.
Green/black is probably the best option to invest in, looking into the future. It's moderately rare-heavy, but also often has versatile uncommon removal and I don't think many key pieces are rotating out, so I'd probably start there.
Generally it's better to start with mono colour decks because rare lands are important in multicolour decks and that makes them more expensive, but it's not impossible without them.

Just started a week ago, did the color challenges and starter deck duels but i’m not seeing jump in. Is that not a thing anymore?
Jump In should appear when you complete Sparky's Challenge and possibly Spark Rank too. You can also skip to unlock all game formats if you go to the Account Settings too. I wouldn't recommend the Jump In event unless you know you want to play Alchemy because there's only LOTR cards in the event at the moment.
Wild cards, mythic cards. How do I know what cards I want? I'm completely new. Red, green, white? Does it matter?
That's an interesting question. Maybe it's best to try out a variety of things until you decide what kind of strategy suits you best. Generally it's best to focus on collecting as many rare and mythic cards as possible, and let the commons and uncommons take care of themselves, you'll collect enough of them as you try to get the rarer cards anyway.
Colour-wise, they all have slightly different strategies, as you'll probably gather from the new player experience, tutorial, colour challenges and starter deck duel event. To start with, I'd recommend starting with simpler decks that are one or two colours, probably mostly focus on creatures as that's usually easier to get used to. There are more complicated strategies that will make more sense as you try more things out.
If you're crafting new cards to make decks, try to avoid using your rare and mythic wildcards unless you're certain you will get good use out of the cards because those wildcards are harder to build up.
Let me know if you have any other specific questions because I want to make sure my videos are as useful as possible to new players specifically.

It should still be the same as far as I'm aware.
5:23 Does the consistency of the starter decks change as different sets move in and out of standard?
The cards in the starter decks only change once each year. I wouldn't use them in normal constructed games usually because they're not as powerful as other decks you could make. I'd recommend finding a good budget deck that you want to make and work towards that. You can use rares from the starter decks to build around. I'll try to make some videos on upgrading the starter decks soon hopefully.

for some reason, I only have 5 jump in tokens. Did this change recently? I accidentally skipped spark rank so it may have been a reward there?
I'm not entirely sure, I don't think you should miss out on rewards if you skip that part, but it might be.
What is the purpose of "crafting"? Is it like when you buy a single, specific card that you want?

How to view my deck in full screen rather than the side panel view?
There's an icon to the right of your gems called Change Deck Layout. That'll change it from the side view to the full layout.
how do you get the 10 jump in tokens. I only have 5...do you have to play the spark ranked?

i am very experienced in TCGs and I kind of built a deck in MTG Arena with which I sometimes win but it always feels like I dont use the full potential of my cards even if I have not many of them. I never had problems to build good decks in TCGs but in MTG Arena I am hopeless :')
What do you think is the cause of feeling like you're not using their full potential? You can share your decklist if you want and I can have a look at it.
@@gameschooldadMTG I think its because I don't know the game very well. I played it one or two times like 10 years ago and started new with MTG Arena one week ago. Maybe its because I dont know what is possible yet in this game.
For example in yugioh you know the cards like "blue eyed white dragon" etc. which is strong and with which you can build good decks. But I dont know a single "monster" or more like Creature or card from MTG so I dont know which cards are good or bad. They are just there from my point of few and I have still fo figure out which cards are good and worth to keep in mind etc.

Ive finished my spark rank and am now bronze. I can now only play ranked Alchemy and Jump in? Why am I not able to choose ranked Standard? Every search ive made on this topic tells me to click the skip tutorial button in account options but i dont have that option. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

@@jamesmontero2604 I did figure it out. Without help form WOTC. You have to play alchemy until you get to silver rank and then the rest of the game unlocks. Im not sure why they didnt take the time to tell me this because I put in multiple tickets. Hope this helps!
That's interesting, I've never seen anyone have to get to Silver to unlock other game modes before. That must be new if it's the same for everyone.

Unless I'm missing something, I do seem to have to win with a given dual-colour starter deck to unlock it
That's how it should work for new accounts if you haven't unlocked any starter decks yet. If you've previously unlocked the old 2-colour starter decks, then they should be automatically added to your account, but there's a glitch that's holding it up.
@7:59 you mention the game gives you 600 gems for free. When does that happen exactly? I have completed all the Color Challenges, won and unlocked all 10 of the dual color decks and completed Spark Rank and am at Bronze Tier 3 and still haven't seen these gems. In fact, the next quest it asks me to do is to complete 3 Quick Draft events, but I'm still locked out of all modes of play except for Ranked Alchemy matches. Did I miss something?
The 3 quick draft matches quest is something that's been added since I made this video a few months ago. It might be that you need to complete that to unlock the free gems. I'm sure it didn't lock all modes apart from Ranked Alchemy before as well, so that's something that's possibly changed. You can go to your account settings and manually unlock all play modes. It might be worth trying that next.

If you mean redeeming codes in the store on mobile, then it's not there for some reason. You can always log in to the Wizards website and redeem codes on there, and they'll be on your account when you next open the game.
Sometimes the game says discard a card or put a card into the library. I've clicked, clicked and dragged all over the bloody place but I'm buggered if I can get it to do the action. There seems to be some sort of secret that the software is unwilling to part with, anybody got any ideas?
You should just be able to highlight the card and hit the submit button to discard a card when you have to. I'm not sure what the problem might be that would stop you from doing this.

What game modes can I play with a friend for fun?
You can play pretty much any format directly against friends. Standard, Alchemy, Historic, Explorer, Brawl, etc.

If you used them, I don't think you'll get any more. Things may have possibly changed since I made this video.

Why are you avoiding using rare and wild cards?
Rare and Mythic wildcards are usually a pretty limited resource, so you just need to manage them carefully to make them last longer. It's easy to excitedly use them all up and then not be able to craft new cards for a while.

I liked hearthstone, but when I came back after 4 or 5 years the game was crap, does this game have alot of people on it and is it straight pay to win or can I get some cards free?
Arena has a decently big player base and you can get almost everything for free, as long as you're consistent with it, and it doesn't even necessarily take a huge time investment. You can search for free pack codes online to give yourself a good head start.

You should just unlock them after you've completed the starter events. Have you done all of them including all matches in the colour challenges?
I ended up with 1000 when I started last month.
Can I put in the codes on mobile?
Not directly in the app, but you can redeem codes by logging in at myaccounts.wizards.com/login

This is why these games have less audience than they could have:
Games that are easy to learn and hard to master can surpass niche while games that require a lot of knowledge to play has a barrier to entry.
League of legends have a similar problem. So many new champions so its slightly hard to pick up again after a while, and hard to start at this point.
The fast forward video in the background could trigger an epileptic fit.

I'm not a new player. No matter who I ask at WOTC or on Reddit, I can't get a clear, straight answer to this, so I hope you can help...
There is a deck sleeve that has all 5 colors. It is stained glass. It appears to be a 30th anniversary sleeve. It's very cool and I see other players with it but I can't get one. Others have posted they can't get it, either. Yet others play a Spark Challenge and get it. I played a Spark Challenge, got gold, but no stained glass sleeve.
Is it only for new players?? Do you know what I'm talking about?

EDIT-- You show the sleeve at 4:30. I never got that, even though I did Sparky's Challenge. I reported this as a bug to WOTC. No reply.
I'm not entirely sure. I know which one you mean. I don't have it on my main account for some reason. I think it was available to buy at one point, and since the new player experience has changed, it seems to be a new addition to offer to new players. It might be something that comes up in the store again at some point for everyone else. It's a shame if it's something you want, but I don't usually pay too much attention to cosmetic items anyway.
Someone on Reddit just said they played a normal bot match using the Large and In Charge deck that unlocked Sparky's Challenge for them to get the sleeve. I just tried it myself and it worked! Why cant you make a vid where you would explain at a current deck what one or another card does and slowly explaining what the hell is going on. And not showing this speeded overall overview.
I make those kinds of videos too. This one is a sped up explanation of the new player experience because if it wasn't sped up, it would have been hours long.
I just started this game 3 days ago but I have no fucking idea WTF Is going on I don't understand a single thing & it's giving me anxiety I might just quit I've never been this frustrated with a game 😢in my life
I'd suggest playing through the tutorial a bit more and then just ask any other specific questions that come up in helpful online groups. The game can get pretty complicated at higher power levels, but I don't think it should take long getting used to it at the tutorial level.

I finished the tutorial, & finished the color challenges (somehow I don't even understand how I did it though)
After i decided to build my own deck so I opened all the packs the game gives new players + all the packs you get from game codes but I wasn't expecting to end up with such a huge amount to the point it overwhelmed me
Now I just have a huge amount of cards that I have no clue what to do with because I don't know how they work not to mention all the other factors that come with building a deck it just too much that at this point it's not even possible to build a deck
I'm honestly not smart enough to understand this game how do people find this game fun it's like math for me it's made me angry, gave me anxiety & I simply don't understand it at all
