- Marina Whitman discusses the legacy of her father, John von Neumann, in her memoir, "The Martian's Daughter: A Memoir," in an interview on Riprap: The Academic Book Television Program, with Jim Schaefer, Host and Executive Producer.
He was the most brilliant mind of our time...
This interview is fascinating - I came here to find out more about her father, a genius, but she is much more than "the daughter of someone famous" - she is so aware, perceptive and eloquent... definitely her own person...
Agreed. I am so impressed with Marina's humility, eloquence, and introspection.
Yes, you can tell Dr. Whitman also possesses a high emotional intelligence, in addition to having a PhD and being on the faculty at the Univ of Michigan Ross School of Business!!!
Great interview thank you
Great interview, thank you
when she said "even if they can be read by 14 generations of machines in the future" i think i almost heard von neumann talking
loved this

What a fantastic and interesting woman!
Wonder if she ever made those letters public... what a fascinating read that would be. Doesn't look like James has responded here in a while.
I dont really read non academic material but i will def have to give this a read. as a person who dedicates their life to math it, it is a must read.
I studied Johnny… he’s one of my favorite folks as a mathematical physicist. Marina is super. The good old days when folks knew mathematics and poetry and food healed… thanks.
The interview was great, and with the background books including one by Lorca. The daughter has also stood out as a lecturer and writing articles on economic and scientific policy in favor of public investment.🌌🌌🌌 🤣🤣🤣📝👨💻👩💻👨💻👩💻🌌🌌🌌
Thank you, Dr. Whitman, for doing this interview. John von Neumann is arguably the brightest person who ever lived. And deeply spiritual. If Johnny said there is a good probablility of god, that's enough of a reason for me. On your father's birthday, treat yourself to chicken paprikash and a good slice of dobos torte.
This is really cool interview.
Is that book contents the life of von neumann specifically?
Her uncle Nick von Neumann wrote a book or so on his brother John also!
My gawd, can you imagine that dinner table!
where is part 1?
Where is this? Whose bookshelf?
I heard a similar story from a Hungarian. When Martians came to earth they found the most beautiful women were in Hungary. As a consequence they are part Martian
👍🙏
She's my cousin wow
Such a beautiful goal. Kucherov had no chance. Garrison wasn’t given a chance. And Bishop never had a chance.
Anybody know what Von Neumann believed about rationality and free will?
please , tell us.
This IS my name if you ever got the source or the answer to your question, please tell me.
Of course that there is no such magical thing as a "free-from-causality" type of will in humans, and that rationality is the application of logic to sensory data.
Beautiful woman. Very intriguing
Now you are an older lady, but the able don't fall very far from the tree :-)
Well truth to be told in this case very far
@@Aziz0938 you are comparing apples with pears.
@@Aziz0938 what do you mean ?
"her father" -- that's hilarious. M2F
Yaaawwwnnn
Sir to put a comment such as yours on a video such as this is to put a big "I am not a sharp intellect" label on yourself, and I hope you do not do this in your real life, since it will severely hurt your chances to reach a desirable point of life.
If you knew who john von neumann was and what he did you wouldn't be yawning
I'm yawning, but only because I couldn't stop myself from learning more about John von Neumann long past inclination to sleep, and then happening upon his wonderful and articulate daughter. Only because I am thoroughly exhausted and daylight becons am I willing to succumb to slumber.
I suspect you are an imbecile.
