Union Pacific 9 locomotive monster train Byers Canyon, and Bond, Colorado

- The freight trains keep getting longer and longer. Caught this monster train passing through Byers Canyon. This is with out question the longest train I have ever seen pass through the Moffat Route. Train was so long it busted in half earlier in the day (probably because there was no pusher locomotives). Eight powered locomotives is the maximum allowed for normal operations (dead locomotives do not count). You can also add pusher locomotives in the rear for some steep uphill grades. Lots of ancient coal cars on this train. These cars along with the GP15 locomotive could be heading to the scrap yard.

When I was a kid (1947) we'd hike in and watch and photograph D&RGW steam slugging it out on this grade.

Empty car backhaul. Most of those loco's were being dead towed. Except probably four for power.

Strange. I counted 171! But then, I always lose my place somewhere around 150+. Some graffiti on some car or other catches my eye way down in the stack....and I begin momentarily daydreaming about Who did it? Where? When?
Then I'm out of the count, and add a few to cover "daydreaming time".

The GP-15 was probably being transferred to another terminal for yard jobs.
Such a giant locomotive worm of 164 wagons carrying goods...Just amazing scenery too! Nice & pleasant shooting!! Hats off..

Well, six on the head end and three DP’d. Likely only two on the head were utilized and two of the DP’s. As an Engineer for BNSF the train orders specify which units to use. They move power around the network this way and send them to heavy maintenance facilities. Whenever I had excess locomotives I would always select dynamic braking on those unused units that had that option unless they were tagged OTS. I’ll take all the braking power I can get. The railroad’s power formula seemed to give us 1.1hp/ton.. This train, coming down the hill, was in dynamic and had air applied.. Don’t want to utilize air too much…

@@traceybonds8794 Yes all the locomotives including the three in the middle would be using air brakes and dynamic braking. Grade varies around 2% from the Moffat tunnel exit to pretty much flat land going to Glenwood Springs.

Bet that canyon sounds eerily quiet once the last car has disappeared! Once saw eight loco units, but ALL at the front, heading up from Albuquerque toward Dalhart, Texas - the driver must have figured out why I'd turned the car around, driven back and crossed the track, he gave me a mighty blast on those klaxons and a friendly wave as he passed me!

Ya, busting knuckles is getting to be a problem with the UP. I was on the Coast Starlight and got stuck on the siding on the north side of Pengra Pass for five hours when they busted on in the middle of the first tunnel.
