We like to surf the wakes of passing boats and move between them to create an endless wave on our hydrofoils. We call this wake thieving. To do so, we need a foil that we can launch from our docks, and pump for a very long time. There are more than 50 hydrofoil brands, and within some brands you can build thousands of unique foils from five main components. We want to find the best foils for the lake, so we’ve setup a scorecard based on the 10 most important criteria. Please let us know know which foils you’d like us to review and stay tuned as we share what we learn on our journey to fly forever.

Just used ur link but swapped for the 1300 front instead for the extra glide in other activities. I was fully ready to go armstrong until your vids turned me on to these wings which look like the right tool for the job on the Hudson River. Keep up the great work!

@@WakeThief down south by the Tappan zee but usually ride spots from the statue of liberty up to Kingston depending on the season. Upgrading from the maliko 200. Great in the surf but want some more glide for winging and better low end starting but still have speed. In the fall I plan on getting the 910 when the surf and wind picks up again

Would be awesome to see a review on the the BSC1060. This is one of my favourite axis wings for a number of reasons except pumping. I find it quite hard to maintain speed pumping the 1060 for some reason. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Excellent scoring system for foils suited for lake use. The 1150 sets a pretty high bar (even scoring only a 70), it will be interesting to see what can top it.

Just got an infinity 76. Wish I had seen this a few weeks ago.
You’ll have a blast with the infinity 76. I still ride one every now and again. Resale value also quite good. If you fall in love with the sport, you can always get more.

Thank you, Kai! There is not a sheet, but that's a great idea. Problem is that my review approach last year wasn't quantitative like this, which was why we instituted this new approach. Awesome videos . I'm mostly a wing foiler but occasionally take my 10ft jet boat to the lake with some mates . I wing and boat with a fanatic 1750ha with a -0.5 shim would love to see that in your review to see if getting the 2000ha would be advantageous

Have you ever tried a longer Axis mast on the 1150 ( eg 90 or 105cm?). Reason I ask is that I found moving to a 105cm mast for wingfoiling was a revelation, greatly reduced touchdowns. Not the same as wake foiling I know but maybe flying higher will be more forgiving as you try to pump and glide for longer ? ( don’t touch down so soon )
Hi Mike, Yes, I've tried the 90cm (both 16mm and 19mm masts) and reviewed both on this channel. No doubt you're right. Longer masts do give more room to play around and fewer touchdowns, but I find it's like walking on stilts, harder to control and carve (as feet further from wing). When pumping, I find the longer mast less rigid and harder to efficiently transfer power while pumping. I have arrived at 75cm mast being the sweet spot of long/short masts. Thanks for the comment and questions. I think you're spot on. Since we only need about 30cm to efficiently pump, I have tried shorter (60cm), to take advantage of rigidity, but I have gone back to 75cm as it seems rigid enough.
I just purchased a similar setup from axis last week based on your videos. In a previous video you said you were using the “standard fuselage”, did you switch to the short recently from the standard and why? I’ll also be using mine for wingfoiling so do you think a “standard” would be better for me? Also, I know you reviewed some rear wings but not the 420. Have you tried it yet? It seems to be very similar to the 460. For those hoping to buy an Axis foil anytime soon, beware that Axis is out of stock on some items and told me it’ll be about a 3-4 week delay. I wish they informed me of this BEFORE I purchased the kit. Not impressed about that but I am very appreciative of your knowledge and experience. Thanks for the videos!
I have exactly that setup with the tray 94. Would be also interested if the short fuse and the 460 would be a good alternative! Keep up the great content!
Hi David - Just tried the 420. Very good. Similar to 460. I totally approve of it. I like standard for long distance pumping and short fuse for all around. Like the 460 vs 420, the standard and short are quite similar, and I like both. Yes, at the link I shared AXIS said mid-July or sooner. It's worth the wait. I actually think I waited 5 weeks for my 1150 a year ago. Little did I know that the 1150 would be such an awesome experience for me!
I am using the Tray 94 now ... just had an epic wake thieving weekend with the Tray. I find I am putting shims (or washers) under the base plate to flatten out the curved tray shape (bring nose down a bit more to load legs more evenly) and that's working great. The tray 94 is a beautiful board, and great for what I want to do on the lake.
Is the Axis 1150 still your favorite? Also, curious about why you switched from a slingshot board to the tray 94? Do you have any insight on the slingshot flying fish v1. Board v the tray 94? Looking to do most surfing on our lake and dock starts. Thx.
Yes, AXIS 1150 is still my favorite. I have both dwarfcraft and tray. Both are good and I've been happy with both. I feel like a short, low volume board that is still will work great for surfing and dock starts. I have not find a wide range of deviation between two different boards that are stiff, short and low volume.
I wonder if you had a small motor and prop (not enough to keep you aloft) to augment your pumping whether you could do it for much longer? A folding prop would not cause much drag, or another option would be having the prop work as a generator when you are wake thieving, charging the battery for the long trip home.

Thanks so much for these videos. I’m very interested in learning the sport. I love wake surfing but wake boat prices are insane. I have a deck boat with an outboard that makes a decent wave. I’m wondering if a setup like this would allow me to ride the second wave. I know everyone’s abilities are different. Would this be a good startup setup with room to improve? Thanks again

I am currently riding the Slingshot Infinity 76 for wake foiling. I believe you used to ride a setup like that but now you are on a high aspect setup. Do you have any videos that compare the difference between a low aspect wing like the infinity 76 vs your axis high aspect wing? I ride behind a weighted Malibu surf boat so getting a good wave isn't a problem but I want to be able to pump around more.

I’m sorry. I don’t speak or read Spanish. Are you asking whether it’s aluminum? Mast, fuselage, and base plate are aluminum. Wings are carbon. For what I like to do stiffness is critical for excellent power transfer and the extra weight is not a big deal as I’m not flying through the air doing aerials.

Hi Fernando. I’d recommend the 1150. The 1150 has superior low speed lift which is be helpful to us bigger guys and had shorter wingspan so easier to carve. However if you want to go very fast, the 1300 will have less drag. For what I do, the 1150 is far superior. Email if i can help. Wakethief@icloud.com

I've never tried the carbon mast. I don't think weight matter that much. I think stiffness is the most important factor for pumping. Rigidity results in better power transfer.

Ever try the Phantom from F one? I have been wake surfing my Gravity 1480 (I'm 100kgs, no I am not fat!) but it doesn't seem to pump well. Once I leave the wave it seems to just flop. (that also could be my skill at pumping, just getting the handle of it). Do you find that when you are on flat water it's much different to pump vs. on a wave? Anyway I am trying to order a phantom but so far I can't even get a price!

Hi! I’m looking to start foiling but don’t know where to begin! I’m 150 lbs and want to flat lake pump (dock pump), as well as surf a little at the ocean, but also use with a surf wing. Any chance you can suggest a certain hydrofoil and size. I saw the 2500 and 1500 carbon hydrofoil that Clearwater foils makes as well as the medium naish thrust surf foil 2019.

Yes, this wing glides well for a larger area wing, and has many of the features of large area wings as well (good low speed lift / quick takeoff / dock starting), but I still prefer the 1150 at my weight and for how I want to use it. If I were 20lb heavier, I might prefer the 1120.

Absolutely! You don’t need as much speed as the rest of us to fly.

I just started learning wing and SUP foiling with first the Axis 1020, and now just got the 1150 with the Axis Froth 125L 6’0 board which has been great in the ocean. I live on a lake and really want to train and exercise with pumping. My goal is to prone surf as well. Would those 2 small pumping surf wake boards (Tray or Dwarf) be feasible for someone who is more on the new side? Or should I just go for it one and practice practice 😅?
Yes. Absolutely fine. Great for someone who already has some foiling experience. Will be too small to paddle in prone surf but perfect for dock starting / surfing wakes etc. if I can help you narrow it down please email me. Wakethief@icloud.com
What you recommend for more surfing less thieving and somewhat same carving/feeling of that setup?
I would recommend a smaller front wing with less roll resistance and a shorter fuselage for less yaw resistance and a smaller rear wing for less pitch and yaw resistance. Axis 910, ultra short and 370 rear wing as one example. Thanks for the question.

Yes, I tend to prefer the 1150 for everything, but if you want fast fluid carving on a big wake surf boat wake, then a smaller wing will give you that ... but not much else.
Did you choose a 5’ board?
I like 3ft boards for the things I like to do.
Why are the prices so high!?
Yes, this was my first reaction when I got into the sport. I think it's a combination of highly customized, low volume, significant design/engineering for each design. There are many manufacturers, and lots of models.
How difficult is it to ride a foil, and can u ride it in the ocean?
Ive never tried in the ocean, but this sport began there. I’d say the majority of foil owners use it for surfing in the ocean and/or kiting. It takes awhile to learn. Think of it like an Ollie on a skateboard. Hard for 10 hours then easy thereafter. Let me know if I can ever help. Wakethief@icloud.com

Great video. I hadn’t watched it before. Thank you. I wonder if the lack of air behind the foil would make this a different regime? I have tried hydrophobic coatings but wasn’t able to really feel the difference or confirm the difference with testing.
@@WakeThief I was wondering, if you would just apply the coating on the bottom of the foil, and provide even greater difference between the two sides, would it create more lift, with the same surface area? Also, as you are using the foils in natural waters and the hydrophobic paints are not that good for wildlife, or natural habitats this could be an other factor. So yep, pretty though question.

@@WakeThief Thanks a mill, I was also wondering - how much speed do you lose when gliding? Would a ladder climb - glide approach be feasible, where you glide like 5-10 meters (loose hight but gain speed ) then pump 3-4 times to gain height, then repeat? Maybe with a 90 cm mast you would get a bit more headspace for gliding? (maybe it would be extremely hard to pump a 90 cm, I just have a 850 f-one kitefoil, that is way small for pumping)
