That’s how I would describe Dimitar Berbatov’s playstyle to the uninitiated. A cult hero for every club he played for, from Bayer Leverkusen to Manchester United, how good was he actually?

Even after 15 years people still talk about him. That shows how unique his skill is. I wonder when we will ever seen someone with similar skill like berbatov.

Sadly never. the game has changed to the point where players like him are shunned. that is why he was benched at Man U as well. It's sad. football is losing it's creativity. Now it's just about effective goal scoring. Creativity and elegance is irrelevant

  • @zarni000

People may argue that he was slow or did not score goals on the matches that counted. I don't care myself. What is remembered is how he scored goals. What is remembered is the creativity. Something that causes you to sit and watch in awe. I for one am not interested in goal scoring machines. What difference does it make if you see 10-20 goals scored the sane way?
This is what this game is sorely lacking and it is getting worse and worse. The likes of him are no more. He was the last of the line of players like this that did amazing things.

Dimitar Berbatov is by far my all time favorite player. So talented, so skillful, so elegant and so classy. Simply one of the best football brains to have ever existed in soccer. His best moments were at Bayern Leverkusen and Tottenham. He was an absolute star and a force of nature against any defense. I remember being terrified and stressed out as a Man Utd fan to see him in the lineup for Tottenham because he always scored against us (same with Torres when he was with Liverpool). People who peg him as "lazy" are completely wrong and possibly jealous of not having his Godly presence, charisma and influence on others around him like Berbatov did have. His work ethic was solid. He was an absolute game changer when he came on as well. Underrated AF. His first touch, technique, passing, stamina, vision, ball control, teamwork, finishing, dribbling, heading, balance, composure, flair and creativity were a thing of beauty. Assist against West Ham was the best piece of skill I've ever seen an individual perform it was so unreal and cool to watch. He was like a movie star or something he was that superb and nice to watch. He was like a magician or a wizard on the pitch he was that unpredictable. Easily the best at finding the net with Nistelrooy at Man Utd. World class. I miss the old soccer so much when it wasn't all about greed and money.
An absolute legend and an artist on the pitch. Honestly felt more like an attacking midfielder than a striker despite being absolutely lethal as a CF. His performances at Tottenham were incredible and his chemistry with Keane/Defoe were legendary. So yeah he was really, really, really, really good if that answers your question. I was so excited when we signed him (I'm a Man Utd fan) in 2008 because I loved him as player and as a person he had so much amazing potential and natural talent and he started his first season at Man Utd by having the most assists in the Premier League. That's something. He was the most badass striker on earth. I felt like Man Utd kind of hindered his career because he was already doing so well and professionally at Tottenham. Of course it was awesome to have him but the chemistry could be odd because his style was so different from Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo and Nani who focus much more on endless aimless running (like a marathon or something) and not enough on the football sport itself and the meaning of it for example and I'm sure Ferguson didn't know always how to use him to the best of his abilities unfortunately. It was almost like robbing and kidnapping him from Tottenham when he had more purpose and future at that club.

@@quiggs111 It's true he didn't have a clue how to use him. Usually benched him in important matches and he threw him under the bus many times over his career. He usually preferred rough tackling football so he played aggressive British players like Rooney, Carrick, Owen or Welbeck most of the time. Ferguson was usually amazing at getting the best out of his players even if they weren't that great but he treated Berbatov horribly and wrongly at his run at Man Utd. He even gave a nod to Hernandez and Tevez who weren't even that skillful or talented over him. Like why Ferguson even buy him? It was simply sheer greed and selfishness. He was doing outstandingly at Tottenham.
Ferguson kind of ruined his talent and willpower. I thought the fans and the teammates treated Berbatov terribly as well I couldn't stand how overly criticized he is all the time. It wasn't even a thing until he came to Man Utd. Like "Ohh he doesn't run much, he's slow and he's lazy. His work rate is bad blablabla". People are always trying to bring him down and focusing on the negatives and not motivate him or anything. Like why don't you do better then since you are so perfect you know? I didn't see Tevez getting this kind of treatment when he was at Man Utd even though he joined the most rotten club and our rivals. I'm glad Berbatov answered his critics aggressively because they deserved that.

@@Sigurjon96Please delete your embarrassing comments. Berbatov didn't always score against ManUtd in fact I only recall 1 goal aside from a consolation goal fpr Leverkusen he ever scored against us when Spurs were at home the only goal they scored against ManUtd in the 4 PL games he was a Spurs player 3 ManUtd wins & 1 draw it was the same game the player we should've prioritised instead of him (Tevez) who got the late equaliser for ManUtd in that game. ManUtd won PL & ChampionsLeague.
Did you really say Torres used to always score against ManUtd 🤦‍♂️
I think it was something like 3 goals in 15 games.
I would understand if you said Shearer, Henry, Fowler, Owen etc...but Torres?? Plus 1of his goals was when we were miles ahead of Liverpool in the table March 2009 and could've played a B-team if we wanted to.
Berbatov is overrated. How come so many achieved more than he did at ManUtd?? Whether they were also technically gifted or not?
ONE goal vs a Top5 team in his whole ManUtd career in major competitions.
He scored in just THREE ChampionsLeague games for ManUtd, NONE in knockouts, NONE vs real elite CL teams and went 3 whole years without a CL goal from late 2008 to late 2011.
His lame pen vs Everton FAcup semi-final 2009, his lame performance when he came on vs Barca in CL final that year, his big misses in 09/10 to deny ManUtd record 4 PL's in a row (when 34 goals Rooney got injured Berbatov couldn't add to his TWELVE for the rest of the season), his misses at 0-0 in FAcup virtual final vs ManCity 2011.
      Back-to-back PL's? No
      FAcup's? No
      ChampionsLeague title's? No
I'll just list a bunch of players who achieved at least 2 out of 3 of those feats for ManUtd under Ferguson for at least 4 seasons as he played for ManUtd for 4 years under Ferguson.
Some of these will also include players who achieved 2 or 3 in less than 4 seasons under Ferguson but a player is non-applicable if they didn't play under Ferguson for at least 4 seasons and didn't achieve 2 or 3 as it's not as expected to do in less than 4 seasons although many did).

E.Cantona (2of3, would've been all 3 if there wasn't harsher qualfying rules plus 3 foreign player rule applied to every year he played in CL apart from 96/97 where he still did quite well got to semi's unluckily lost to eventual winners)
      M. Hughes (2of3 and similar as Cantona although Hughes never played in CL without 3 foriegn player rule and he still won CupWinnerCup first year English teams were allowed back in Europe)

S.Bruce (2of3, same as what I said about Hughes)
G.Pallister (2of3, same as what I said about Cantona)
P.Ince (2of3, same as what I said about Hughes)
B.McClair (2of3, same as what I said about Hughes)

L.Sharpe (2of3, same as what I said about Hughes)

      J.Stam (all 3)
      R.Johnsen (all 3)
      H.Berg (all 3)

      M.Silvestre (all 3)
      R.Ferdinand
      N.Vidic
      P.Evra
      E.VanDerSar
      L.Saha
Etc..etc...etc...these are 2 or 3. Berba got 0. Even when I think of another player who got 0 I remember they weren't under Ferguson for 4 years so are N/A. Berbatov is applicable and the only others I can think of who failed all 3 were players like J.Evans but no one looks at him as a great player, Rafael, D.Welbeck & A.Valencia also, if you rate them at similar level then fair enough....plus they all literally were only denied those things because of Berba messing up loads and A.Valencia did win FAcup with ManUtd just not with Ferguson and Rafael, J.Evans & S.Welbeck won more PL's than Berba and in general did better for ManUtd especially for their age and came from the academy. Welbeck like Valencia also later won FAcup with other manager to Ferguson but with other club but he cost ManUtd nothing and he scored more CL knockout stage goals and scored more vs Top5 teams, Valencia's first season at ManUtd 09/10 did his job more than Berbaflop that season, scored/assisted a reasonable amount for his position compared to Berba for his position and Valencia isn't even that talanted).
That's another reason I call Berba "Berbaflop" as he was also the record signing for ManUtd at the time and he didn't only turn out to be crap but he made Tevez leave so it was even more of a nightmare signing. I actually thought he might suit ManUtd well before he signed so I'm not biased/prejudice I'm judging him on how he did and obviously wanted him & the club to do well, but it didn't work out and it annoys me when some people don't just accept that.

The video is very accurate and well done,Berbatov had even greater potential. I think he was a candidate for the golden ball in 2008 or 2009. In 2002 he could have scored a hundred percent goal in the Champions League final, it can be said that he "launched Casillas' career as a starting goalkeeper". Ferguson destroyed Berbatov by not giving him enough chances, the arrogance of Cristiano, the favored Rooney and even Checherito were favorites of Ferguson.

Berba was never a candidate for the golden ball. He didn’t even have 10 goals in epl in that 2008/9 season. Why would he get nominated for the golden ball based on his 2nd worst prem season of all time?

Scoring over 300 goals is too little? Almost 50 goals with Bulgaria. His finishing is lethal. For me he has the perfect career. The fact that he is overly criticized is an issue though. He had his best years at CSKA Sofia, Bayer Leverkusen and Tottenham. Man Utd didn't appreciate him enough. I bet if he stayed at Tottenham he would have been their all time best striker (better than Harry Kane) and had even more success as a footballer. Incredibly lethal as a center there he was a playmaker and a poacher. Ferguson was clueless on how to use him. Only bought him so he didn't need to face him. Underused and benched way too often and put in awkward positions. I didn't appreciate how he was slammed at Man Utd. Even his former teammates like Ferdinand backtalks Berbatov. Not very morally correct or admirable behavior just a pretentious one. Always enjoyed Berbatov to bits so talented, imaginative and skillful.
