How once homeless Gregory Smith found the meaning of true contentment | Australian Story

- Gregory Smith’s story is a powerful demonstration that no matter how desperate a person’s situation may seem, redemption is always possible.
When Australian Story first filmed with Gregory Smith in 2018, he had just completed a PhD, a stunning achievement for a man who had spent much of his life homeless and addicted to alcohol and drugs.
Five years on, his remarkable transformation continues.
He works as a university lecturer and advises a number of organisations on issues around homelessness, contributions which were recognised this year when he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.
He has also found love and lives with his new partner in Orange, NSW. In 2022, at the age of 66, he welcomed a baby son into the world.

His very own family deserted him and he grew out of himself realising all his past and turned the bad into good and created his own family after successfully overcoming the odds. What an incredible person he is. God bless him and his beautiful family.
This is so difficult to listen to because it resonates so profoundly. I too came from an abusive, sadistic household. I got a criminal record from theft that I was forced to engage in by my own parents. There were nany times I hoped to not to ever wake up when I could manage to sleep. Only a rare kind word from a teacher, love from my grandmother and a friend who did not betray me in the worst of my days have lead me on a slightly “easier” path. Otherwise, I believe I would not be here.
God-only-knows how I managed to get three degrees and did a convincing job of pretending that I was just like everyone else. At least, that’s what I thought but my dreadful past caught up to me. I lost everything. I couldn’t keep the charade going.
I am telling you this not for pity, but to validate that childhood trauma hurts us lifelong and to thank you for being a example of hope to us all. You finally heard your soul’s voice instead of the introjects from your abusers. You became who you were always meant to be and it is just the most beautiful thing I have seen.

I wish all the Forgotten Australians, a path back from the trauma that has hampered their life and happiness. This is such an amazing story and I salute Gregory for seeing 'we are our own enemy and we all deserve self love'. Labeling people who just need understanding is not helpful. Great story ABC.

My dad used to say "you can't give what you never got". That's a cop-out and not true at all. Gregory Smith is a prime example that we can give so much more than we ever got.

This story is about transformation of the mind, soul and heart. Life circumstances forced Gregory to believe that he was a misery, he even believed it and lived in the mystery. But there was a spark of love in his heart that flared up to enormous proportions and continues to shine for others. What a miracle and grace from God! ✝️🫶
