I am in zone 8. Have a bato system outdoors. I have 8 buckets per line and a 40 gallon tank. I run24/7 with strainers in each bucket. I use 4oogal per hr. pump continuous recycle. Refill with water and nutrients when needed. System does well and have very few problems. Pumps last about 3 years. Like your videos.

Great video. Glad to have found your channel. With my bato buckets, I run my system for 30 minutes, four times per day at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm. That seems to be working well in my perlite. Cheers.
This is perfect! I have been thinking of making a very small Bato bucket system for maybe two chilis in my balcony this year. Last year I did Kratky and it went really well but now I kinda want to mix things up.

Had these buckets set up with clay balls in net pots and ran them constant. They were a small part of a large system that also had flood and drain and different drip strategies, but worked well. Large pump in a 200l sump, prioritized pump life.
Tomatoes in these were wild, growth was crazy, roots would have to be trimmed and maintained after a month or so or else they'd clog the top and flood over or clog the drain pipe. Love this method.
Thank you for another great video! It's not quite the same, but the company I work for builds indoor vertical farms. We use plugs in a flood and drain system. Water the plants 4 times a day at 4 hour intervals and no water when the lights are off.

Very cool. I’m doing DIY Dutch buckets now and I kind of want the fancy bato buckets next year
I'm in 10b zone started with the 5 gallon Dutch bucket system with the paint strainer in the bucket with perlite. I didn't like the end of season clean up as some of the strainers degraded in the sun and fell apart when trying to remove them with the perlite in them. I switch over to a net pot that fits the 5 gallon bucket perfect and use clay balls as media. wow what a difference in my plants and the benefit of actually lifting the lid to check for a healthy root system is amazing much like the DWC.
Hot sun tip if your buckets bake in the sun like mine wrap them with a insulating material or you'll cook your roots. i had a sever blossom end rot that took most of my first summer to figure out no additives helped no one could explain it. then one hot day got home from work early lifted a lid on one of my buckets and bam I hit with what felt like sauna door was opened in my face. I wrapped my buckets with insulated bubble wrap, changed res water and was instantly fixed. In Both styles I've used I run my pump & air stone 24/7 with occasional res dumps.

Good Work Hoocho, A top dressing of expanded clay will help with the Algae. Also we run straight pH adjusted water as our back up rez, no salt build up or EC spikes. Keep up the good work. Cheers Trev.

That's for Western Australia, very hot and dry in sommer, winter 15minutes every 2 hours

I made my 1st dutch bucket system last year ,I followed MHP instructions
I used 4 gallon square cat litter buckets and the paint strainer bags with course pearlite
and used his formula for masterblend , epsom salt and calcium nitrate
I had 7 buckets and a 27 gallon res and 400GPH aquaneat pump
I set my cycle to 1/2 hour on and 2 hours off during the day and less frequently at night
started my plants late and got much better results than in this video but not as good results as MHP
but pretty good, black beauty eggplant, cucumbers ,grape tomatoes and some larger tomatoes
eggplant did great and so did the cucumbers . 2 eggplant plants in 1 bucket(3 gallon,i had one odd bucket) , 3 cucumbers in another bucket and tomatoes in the other 5 buckets , one plant each bucket

Thanks so much, I was worried that running 24/7 would be bad for my tomato plants in pearlite. I feel better now :)
I'm also in SEQ, and started a bato bucket type system for growing ginger in pure coco coir. I obviously started knowing bugger all. I figured the coco coir holds a lot of water so i wouldnt need to water too much. I started with 4 minutes of irrigation per hour, and I ended up getting some extreme nutrient burn even though my nutrient was only 1.5 to start off. After a bit of reading and testing the EC of the return water, I figured it was because the water was evaporating and the nutrients were concentrating in the coir. Adjusting to 6 minutes of watering every 30 minutes totally fixed the problem. My main concerns were power consumption of the pump, and pump wear (im using a diaphram pump instead of centrifical), so i wanted the pump to be off as much as possible. I also don't run the pump at night, since I figure the coir can hold water and nutrients over night just fine. Having it off at night also makes it much more amenable to running off solar.
After watching this, i might try 20 mins 3 times a day or something and see what happens. Getting the nutrient burn has made me very cautious of watering too little now, and I'm a bit paranoid.
Anyway, Its all pretty fun.
It is quite likely that the plants were transpiring the water, leaving a more concentrated nutrient in the Coco coir. When it's hot the plants "drink more" & when it's colder, the plants "drink less". In computerised commercial farms, the EC is reduced during the hottest part of the day to reduce plant stress.
Other than the knowledge I’ve gained from your videos, I think my favorite part is when your dogs just randomly show up in the camera 😂😂😂

I live in South Australia.
Currently my pure perlite system runs every 3 hours for 20 minutes then 10 minutes alternately from 6 in the morning to 6 at night and I only have a 10 minute cycle at midnight through the night.
I grow chillies, strawberries, Tomatoes and a few different cucurbits like watermellon, cucumbers and even a Luffa gord.
They all seem to grow well even during our hottest days.

Great content as always, Hoocho! Paint strainers for the drains and the bucket themselves. The paint strainer will allow you to recycle your perlite easier. Also, your roof is leaking like a paint strainer too! Using a heat gun when prepping poly pipe will save your thumbs! I look forward to the next video!
cheap small river rock from my local box store has worked well for me for years. make sure to give it a good rinse before use.
Great video! Awesome Timelapse of the tomatoes. The only thing I think might become a problem is the roots clogging the drain pipe with no paint strainers in the buckets. I had this problem with a dwc setup that had similar pipe/tubing. I’ve seen another guy that actually lifts his up with the paint strainer bags and trims his roots right at about the height that yours are at right now. In my dwc setup, the quarter inch line was directed through the lid right onto the root ball and in several instances, the roots grew upwards and clogged the pipe! Again, awesome informative video and glad to see successful yields coming through. I will be sure to post my upcoming system in the Facebook group.
He thinks he knows what he's doing but he's not supposed to recirculate the water you get diseases and clogged emitters that way all the commercial Growers drain to waste in Beto buckets that is

Did you NOT use the Bato Bucket TOPS for a reason? Would the drip line be more visible for checking flows if it was along the front of the buckets? Your channel is my go-to knowledge url.
I have a “Flood & Drain” system, which is using Clay Balls as the media type.
As for my irrigation timer, I’m using a Smart Switch (Sonoff TH Elite). However, the TH Elite also has a humidity sensor, and I have placed the sensor in the grow media. When the humidity/moisture drops below 15%, the pump is turned on, and as soon as the water gets to the top of the garden bed and the humidity/moisture increases to 35%, the pump turns off. The TH Elite also shows a graph of the humidity/moisture levels over time, and it’s clear that during the day, the irrigation cycles increase, but at night, or when its cool, there are less cycles.
Overall, I’ve found this system to work really well, and the Sonoff range isn’t that expensive.

The reason for the specific Bato bucket drain connectors is to ensure the removal of stale nutrient from the very bottom of the bucket. This is good practice as the fresh oxygenated nutrient sits on top of the stale nutrient. This was the patented part of the Bato bucket design (patent is now expired), meaning that most home made buckets are not really a Bato bucket design unless they incorporate this same removal of the old nutrient first.
To maximise your fruit production, add 20% to 30% Coco coir (or vermiculite) to your perlite. After a full grow, pull the roots out & you will see why your fruit production was maximised over using 100% perlite.

I was watching you stick buckets under the leaks and thinking... Didn't you just go over the holes in the bottoms of those...? But we get downpours like that here during hurricane season, so I get it. It's reflexive. Seriously though, those flood-blocked roads have southeastern US all over them. I don't suppose you have the Cajun Army to call on though.
Hello. Very interesing video. I've got a question about these buckets. From theire look it seem like there's always some amount od growing medium inside (height of this "dent" under which you put drainage pipe. Is it correct? It is actually good for plants? I'm affraid that when roots will reach this "pond" the whole idea of the system collapses. The plant is constantly in growing medium like in NFT or DWC. Correct me if I'm wrong.

you could pump into a raised container with a bell syphon and allow that raised syphoning container to run the irrigation cycle. it would result in intermittent irrigation with a constntly running pump. less pump wear. more aeration/wet/dry cycles

So... price value vs ease of use, which do you prefer for the tomatoes? The bato buckets or your hootch bunnings buckets?
Fun tip for anyone that wants to add a "strainer" to the end of a pipe; use a heat gun to make the PVC malleable, insert something a bit smaller than the pipe, zip tie to make an hourglass shape, and now it won't slip off!
Do the buckets always have a reservoir of water in the bottom up to the tube? Or does the tube drain the bucket completely?
If you planted those tomatoes further down in the perlite, like you can do in the soil, would they begin growing a bigger root area? Or do you think that too much light gets down into the perlite for that to happen?
I am designing a similar system for my off-grid place using a solar pump of 320 gallons/hr (1200 liters/hr approx) and am concerned about the no irrigation during the nights. My current small system is 15 minutes on and 45 minutes off. If you have 15 minutes every 4 hours and have such good results that eases my mind on my idea.
I have a terrible time with roots getting into my drain system. I am wondering if the Bato buckets have solved this problem or if it is your timed watering that makes the difference or you have the same problem. I have 5-gallon buckets with a 90-degree fitting inside and have been running my nutrients 24/7. I am thinking my problem may stem from running nutrients all the time, Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Great video! I have a question id love to get your take on and that is the subject of keeping the nutrient solution cool during the hot seasons. Do you feel its a factor? Do you do anything specific to keep your nutrient solution/reservoir cool? It seems like your reservoir is dug down a bit into the ground but it would appear its more to get the return line water back in the reservoir than keeping it cool. Appreciate any feedback. Great video. Just finished setting this system up. However, I can't get my pH to stabilise. I have added pH lower as it is too high and although it goes down for awhile, it shoots back up again. Can anyone help, please?
I would recommend you to 3d print a "Schauberger Trichter" to provide your water with oxygen. The plants will love it .
Last time I grew in claybles I believe I watered 15 minutes every hour, but on a seperate cycling timer that turns the pump on and off every 30 seconds. Roots eventually clogged the drain and bulged the container so much that it was hard to remove the rootball afterwards. Dont think I'll grow in claybles again, lot of effort to reuse them.
My best grow in dutch buckets I used a layer of claybles on the bottom, a few cm higher then the drain. Then I put a piece of porous anti root membrane on top of that and filled the rest with coco . But cant remember how I watered that..

I've noticed in your timelapse videos that the greatest amount of vegetative growth occurs during the lights out period. What is your lighting/dark periods and have you experimented with the length of darkness to increase plant growth? And if vegetative growth is occurring during darkness, is root growth occurring during light periods? Also interesting, "Early morning is the best time to take cuttings, because the plant is fully turgid." according to the NC State extension.

I grow stupid hot chillies in bato buckets & clay balls, the system runs 24/7.
They grow like weeds! Very easy and no fuss.
You can put a splitter on your discharge line 1 to empty waste and 2 runs back to your holding tank so you can run your pump all day and let plants rest

Don’t know if it was OK but this year I dropped the vermiculite and used straight perlite. My season is just about finished in Oz but it worked fine. I’m using 20 L buckets with two plants in each and draining to a sump that is recirculated. I have a bit over 40 kgs from 4 sq m and a few more dribbling in now to finish.

Full strength, and just keep it simple, same irrigation frequency the whole way. Unless you notice it needs more frequent. Then up it.

We've been watering our strawberries 30 min 3 times a day, but it's a 50/25/25 mix of perlite, coco coir and vermiculite. We're going to drop that to 15 min as it looks a little damp.

I have the same bato butckets. The company recommends perlite, two 0.5gal/hr emitter with stakes per bucket and for tomatoes, run pump 2 minutes once per hour during daytime/grow lights on. As my tomatoes grow I slowly go from 2 minutes once per hour to 2 minutes every 30 minutes. I’m using 2.4-2.5 EC, which I think is what company recommended, I forgot already. Commercial greenhouse near me uses the same bato sourced from same company. They layer the buckets, about 1.5-2inch layer of perlite, 1-2inch layer of vermiculite then fill with perlite. They have same two 0.5gal/hr emitters per bucket. They run pump for 20 seconds every 20 minutes with ZERO runoff and they don’t even have recirculating system. Their drain goes outside. They run 1.8 EC. They don’t even bother reusing perlite & vermiculite. Each grow they use fresh. It’s a very successful company so I can’t hate on their methods. I’m happy with mine too.
Oh and commercial greenhouse’s 20 seconds every 20 minutes is also only during the day/light.

Could you use a solar pump that would run the solution during the day (then shut off at night)? I have space to set up a hydro system, but access to power to run a pump is really inconvenient.
