- Songkran is Thailand's most famous festival, marking the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. It's celebrated every year from April 13th - 15th.
The most famous part of Songkran is the throwing of water so it's often known as the Thai Water Festival. The custom originated from yearly spring cleaning and the cleaning of images of Buddha. Using the 'blessed' water that cleaned the images to soak other people is seen as a way of paying respect and bring good fortune.
During Songkran, Bangkok experiences a mass exodus, where half of its residents travel back to their home towns for family reunions and replaced by tourists - who travel into Bangkok to enjoy this festive time of the year.
If you're on the street during the Songkran festival, you're going to get wet!
