  • In 2011, Aston Martin sought out to win their first 24 Hours of Le Mans since 1959 with their brand new LMP1 car, the Aston Martin AMR-One. But the car didn't turn out to perform as Aston Martin had hoped. Rather, it is considered by many to be the worst LMP1 car of all time.

      Your pronunciation of Peugeot, right or wrong, wasn't a problem. The problem was the way you say "Martin". Where did the "t" go? It sounds like "Mar-en" or "Mar-in". I've heard similar word-mangling done to words like "mountain" which for some reason ends up being pronounced "mou-an" (with a weird glottal throat noise in place of the "t").

      Yes, and no. Yes, there were loads of LMP1 teams, but it was very much an A-class and a B-class situation, diesel vs petrol. Plus, independent teams like Pescarolo, who were always underdog giant-killers, were rapidly losing the funds and facilities to compete with the manufacturers. And teams like Rebellion seemed content to be "best of the rest". The petrol teams might as well have been their own seperate class considering how they weren't competitive enough to properly race Audi and Peugeot.

    In 2010 Audi won because they finished. First to win, you must finish. Peugeot did not finish, they all blew up within short time of each other. So to say it was a fluke for Audi to win and in the end dominate is a ridiculous. They simply built a reliable car, that was slower than Peugeot, but the bloody things finished and they finished 1-2-3. Peugeot learnt a huge lesson in 2010 after starting the race 1-2-3-4. It was VERY embarrassing for Peugeot actually. Enjoyed your video.

    3:54, yes the engine was a total shit show, but not for the reasons described.
    1) Of course it's going to be longer than a V8, and this isn't a real issue. The car is 5 metres long on it's own, there's going to be some dead space in the monocoque.
    2) An inline engine package was chosen over a V engine, since it would allow them to run a very low drag car concept.
    3) The lack of capcity is not an inherent issue. Highly boosted turbo engines can last for 24 hours and Aston never suffered a failure in the head. Which indicates there was never an issue with the engine blocks flexing.
    4) The steel bars for a non stress engine design are super common. The 787B had similar structures, although I believe those were done in titanium. Also the weight of those bars would not be sufficient to "upset" the balance of the car. It's not ideal, but the car would be required to be loaded with ballast to get the weight were it is wanted.
    5) It seems that the reason the power was so low, is that the team got scared after the first engine failed and were unsure of the cause, so they elected to detune the engines just in case. The engine failure was caused by the coating on the cylinder walls.
    Finally the most damning reason why the engine was a failure is shown how after quali for Spa, cracks in the aluminium alternator pullies were found. And when steel replacements were fitted, it just moved the cracking issue to a drive pully. This shows that the engine was probably suffering an issue with harmonics in the crankshaft. Even after they fixed the liners, the engine was constantly trying to kill itself.

    The multiple oversights/failures on a factory backed car is amazing. By the 2010's most teams, esp factory backed teams have long since figured out reliability issues. So being down a minimum of 100hp for the sake of running 24hrs is a terrible strategy. While it is certainly possible to engineer a straight 6 that is load bearing, but it requires time and resources. Being down on power, extra weight high in the car, questionable aero choices, and poor reliability isn't a winning formula in any race, much less a 24hr race at La Sarthe.

I remember being quite intrigued by the AMR One, especially after that video by Bozzy with the amazing sound of its petrol engine, and then, just after the start, we got that absolute damp squib; luckily we still had the glorious sound of the C6R to enjoy for the rest of the race. @@GTRain Agreed about the balancing of LMH and LMDh, we've seen how that played out when the plan was to balance hybrid and non-hybrid LMP1; the only reason why I'm still a bit hopeful is because some big names such as Porsche decided to choose LMDh. As as aside, I really hope that GM will enter as well, even if that might unfortunately mean the end of the Corvette program in the GT class. Regarding underdogs, one team to keep an eye on is Glickenhaus: no big hopes for a result, but I'd be quite happy to see them finishing the race and be classified

    In terms of performance, the worst LMP1 seen at Le Mans that actually made it to the start of the race was the Lola B2K/10 powered by a diesel Caterpillar V10 (in fact a block coming from the VW Touareg iirc). It was in 2004 and if my memory serves well, its fastest lap was a 4'10 when the fastest P1 were around 3'30 or 3'35

    This car gets an unfair rep. It knew it wasn't ready, it was suppose to be developed over several years. It just got killed by bad PR. The Nissan, which promised to win in the first year, was much worse for that reason. The 6 Hour race it debuted in was said to be an abbreviated test session in the first place.

    • @GTRain
      @GTRain  Před 3 lety +5

      Open cockpit LMP1 cars look kinda silly imo. Something about the size of the body compared to the tiny driver and the fact that he's off to the side rather than central. On an F1 car it looks ok because the chassis is narrow. It would look incredible as a closed cockpit car.

McNish was a reckless driver, always taking unnecessary risks, in that occasion he destroyed the Ferrari's chances of winning the GT class, and almost killed himself in the process. And why? To gain 0.1s by overtaking the GT car half a corner earlier? In a 24-hr race? Not the smartest guy.
