    There are so many things that I AM SO GRATEFUL for as a paraplegic that make my life easier. There have been so many advances in medical and adaptive technology that allow me to stay healthy and have the kind of freedom and independence that I desire. BUT, none of these technologies are free and very few of them are optional. I require medical supplies to live, I require a wheelchair to move. AND these things are expensive. I wanted to figure out just how much money has been shelled out for the things I need since I was paralyzed at the age of 13 and the the number I came up with even surprised me!

    That's a madness!, and should be a testimony of how important it's to have a good and strong public NHS that takes care of what their citizens need to live.

      @@EmpoweredParaYeah, I wish we had a stronger voice and that the federal and provincial governments would listen. These medical and related expenses are just basic expenses to allow life to be more on par with A-B Canadians. There are lots of other issues such as pain, paperwork, and accessibility that already have to be dealt with.

      Im in England & have had to buy all of my wheelchairs & many other medical costs, so it’s cost me tens of thousands here in the U.K. too! Nhs doesn’t supply everything! (Only been disabled for 9 years & never had a car or van or a lot of this stuff which is why the cost isn’t higher)

    Great video, thank you. My brother and I were having this exact conversation the other morning. I’ve only been injured for 18 months (t4/t5 tree cutting accident at work) and we were amazed at the the cost, even just estimating. Thank goodness insurance is covering it. Throw in all the medical costs (life flight, surgeries, hospital stays, inpatient rehab, all the scans and visits) and holy crap!!!

    The first words out of my wife’s mouth when she saw the $329,000 figure was “lord, love a duck” which is pretty strong language for her! Pleased to see your lift in what looks like might be a previous van. OMG, I forgot about all the lifts you need just to use your home! And the cushion prices! But all that pales in comparison to the cost of your medical supplies. Mind-blowing!! Plus all the other costs. Like what you might pay for vacations because generally needing accessible rooms in an accessible hotel. Some places that may be cheaper, may not work. Always need a hotel with an elevator. And the fact that there are a lot fewer options for vacation locations such as rental cabins.
    One personal sample - We know that proper shoes for my wife who is disabled are $2,300 per pair with very limited insurance for them. So she is making do with New Balance Track Shoes for now and we pray we don’t get invited to an event like a wedding. She refuses to pay $2,300 for one pair of rather ugly shoes. I know nobody says that “Life is fair”, but My God, it is so expensive for life with a disability!

    It would be a crazy amount of money if I add up all the cost over 25 years. Injured in 98, T12 Incomplete SCI. None of my home modifications were coverage and still not. Bath benches, grab bars, nope. Thankfully my prescriptions, catheters, wheelchairs, wheelchair parts & repairs are covered. Mind you I have to pay a premium per month for this insurance but the medical costs far out weight what I pay for a premium. Great video!

    I live in the states (North Carolina). My daughter has insurance so we dont have to pay anything for her cathers. Which im very grateful for. Her cathers are 5 dollars each, she gets the cathing kits that come with everything. She gets 180 of those a month. Her chair costs 7000 in 2020 which i think is crazy. One thing is i wish we could get another wheelchair but we have to wait i think one more year before insurance will pay for it. This October it will be 3 years since she has been a paraplegic. I lived in Brantford Ontario for 6 months when my daughters were little. There dad is a Canadian and still lives there.

    The cost of being paralyzed as explained in this video is freaking me out so much that I’ve had to watch it numerous times. The cost is soooo high! And this is only for bare-existence; none of these things are fun or frivolous or optional. These items only allow someone to live close to how a non-paralyzed person lives! You are so correct when you say this is disheartening and that it will probably break the Million Dollar Mark over your lifetime. Thank you for tabulating all these costs and hopefully lots of A-B people will watch this and learn. I’m certainly telling all my able-bodied friends to watch this. Thank you Brittney!

    With inflation this year being out of control on so many things - especially food and gas - has it also been a problem for medical supplies? For some of them at least, they already seem awfully expensive. I particularly am concerned for those who pay out-of-pocket for some of the items that are critical and necessary just for living.

    Hi Brittany, I'm not sure if the costs of any of the supplements you take because you have a SCI are covered by a program in Canada. In the US, they are not. Along with a lot of other medical expenses. I'm 38+ years post injury C5-C7 incomplete. I worked full-time for over 30 years but then had to give it up. Sure miss that income but at least I was able to keep my insurance. The general public have no idea what a tremendous strain an injury of this magnitude is not just to those who are injured but also for their loved ones and caregivers.

  • @paulusthegrey
    @paulusthegrey Před rokem

    Why are the prices high? The basic reasons. Pharmaceutical companies can charge a premium as we're a captive market and know we need this stuff. Anything else is "bespoke", you can't exactly buy a wheelchair off the shelf it has to be tailor made, and in most cases tech either needs adaptations or custom fitting.
