- TALES THAT WITNESS MADNESS (1973) is not an Amicus film, but it's almost indistinguishable from their series of Horror Anthologies. But is it a bad rip-off, or a successful homage? Let's talk about it!

In a late-night meeting at his asylum, Dr. Tremayne (Donald Pleasence) receives visiting colleague Nicholas (Jack Hawkins) and recounts the histories of four unusual patients whose cases he has solved. In "Mr. Tiger", Paul (Russell Lewis), the sensitive young son of wealthy but constantly bickering parents, befriends an imaginary tiger. In "Penny Farthing", antiques dealer Timothy (Peter McEnery) inherits a penny-farthing bicycle which seems to have time-travel capabilities, as overseen by the apparently haunted portrait of Uncle Albert. In "Mel", Brian (Michael Jayston) prominently displays a human-shaped dead tree in his home as a piece of found art, angering his jealous wife Bella (Dame Joan Collins). In "Luau", flamboyant literary agent Auriol (Kim Novak) hosts new client Kimo (Michael Petrovitch). Despite Auriol's overtures, he seems more interested in Auriol's daughter Ginny (Mary Tamm). As Ginny leaves for a mysterious holiday, Kimo's assistant helps Auriol prepare an elaborate luau for Kimo.

How ironic that the tree laying naked in bed gave me a woody woodpecker.
lol
Dr. McCoy was willing to sacrifice humanity's utopia for Joan Collins and, brother, I get it.
I've never even heard of this one. Thanks, my dude! 10/10 fricheks
Jack Hawkins had throat surgery do to cancer and having his larynx removed. He play a judge in a tv movie QB VII and had to have his voice dubbed as well.
That’s sad.
hawkins must have had a scar cause that is the highest collar I have ever seen
Yeah, I think that was the case.
Hey, so glad you did this. It's a film that seems to have been missed by most horror fans. Just like most portmanteau films, its flawed. I love it.
I saw this a long time ago, but I saw it on commercial television, so I didn't realize that it had more gore (and nudity) than the Amicus movies. Also, I just assumed that there was something that got edited out from that last segment which explained it better. Guess that was not the case.
Donald Pleasence also appeared in The Uncanny & The Monster Club, Both similar to the Amicus style. The Uncle Albert photo having a touch of Bagpuss as well!
Hi Daniel! As a huge fan of anything horror, I absolutely love your channel.
Thank you so much!
I'm American as well, but I knew what a pennyfarthing was. One is found and used in one of my favorite children's books -- set in the USA circa WWII.
How did I miss this movie? I love anthologies and especially horror anthologies with Donald Pleasance...and I'd never even heard of this one! This one really reminds me of Beyond the Grave and Asylum especially.
Great episode!!! Yes, Joan Collins is a serious woody!! I have never seen this anthology, but I will keep it on my radar!!!
Jack Hawkins was dubbed by Charles grey because his larynx had been removed due to cancer.
Jennifer Jayne was also in The Trollenberg Terror (The Crawling Eye).
Yes! I love that movie!
Ah yes, The Crawling Eye, also known as The Marty Feldman Story (as it's called by Mike, Crow, and Tom).
@@reignfire85 aka the peter falk story
Love your videos. So glad i got to meet Vincent Price, Christopher Lee,Hazel Court, Veronica Carlson, & Ingrid Pitt. ❤
That we both went to Calvin and Hobbes with Mr. Tiger is why I'm glad that I found your channel.
I saw Tales at the theater when it came out, we loved it. It was a great time for this style of horror.
Great review- for the Penny Farthing segment, I can only assume that bitter Uncle Albert yearns for his blood relation,Timothy, to go back in time and right any wrongs in his staid, unsatisfactory relationship with Beatrice. Before his death in early 2024, Michael Jayston used to have lunch every day in his local Italian restaurant in Hove; he was a great guy, and always happy to talk to the customers about his distinguished acting career. RIP Michael Jayston.
That tiger story was done before. The TV show one step beyond.
The book and movie of The Illustrated Man had something similar.
New to your channel, so I'm not totally sure if you have done it yet; have you seen the anthology Black Sabbath/The Three Faces of Fear? Yes, it is where the band got their name. Yes, the different titles implies two different cuts of the film. It's definitely not similar to the Amicus anthologies, but it is certainly worth doing a deep dive into it.
Not yet! It is going to come up in a video that I think will be my next one, but it’s not a dedicated video on it. I would love to do that!
Oh Daniel, you need to see Black Sabbath ASAP
Oh, I misread the question! Yes I’ve seen it. I thought you were asking if I’d done a video on it yet.
Hey there Daniel .. I found your channel about a month ago and I m loving it ..your content is fun snappy and very entertaining..I m working my way through your back catalogue and it's really cool to find a channeli like so much 😊❤
Thank you!!
@@cobwebschannel You re welcome.. you re enthusiasm is infectious
Yeah, I only recently found this channel, too! I was especially happy to see his Amicus movie reviews! Hammer is great, but so is Amicus, and it doesn't get the love it deserves.
Thank You for the Video 😀
Thank you for watching!
My other half quotes "does anyone here love me" all the time
haha Love that
I remember also watching another anthology series from 1980 called Hammer House of Horror. A young Pierce Brosnan was in one of the episodes.
Mr. Tiger sounds similar to the Ray Bradbury story, "The Veldt," and the second story sounds similar to Somewhere in Time. I wonder if Richard Matheson's came out this movie. Have you ever reviewed The illustrated Man?
"Bid Time Return", the novel that "Somewhere in Time" was based on was published in 1975, which is after this movie came out.
The Veldt-I thought the same thing.
If you really want to see Kim Novak “old” check out The Mirror Cracked… she has a wonderfully bitchy time in that one.
Sweets to the Sweet focuses on a child as the main character. I always think the Joan Collins scene must have had some influence on Evil Dead
Based on the clothing, I think that's supposed to be the 1880s, not the 1910s. There were no bustles in the 1910s. Think Jack the Ripper era (1888), versus Titanic era (1912).
I had never heard of this movie, but I think I'm going to give it a try this weekend. Thanks for the video! :)
At 4:49 uncle Albert looks like Mr peacock from are you being served!
ok, the tree segment with Joan Collins looks super interesting and cool - plus, you know, Joan Collins lol
I have seen tales that witness madness, the best thing to be said about it is that it is nondescript.
Ahh it's production company, I looked it up. Am I right?
Yes indeed!
@@cobwebschannel TY!
Wow, I've seen all the amicus movies and have wished there were more. Thanks for adding another portmanteau film to my watchlist. Just liked and subscribed, going to have to check your videos for more recommendations.
"... none of the Amicus films ever focused on a kid." Does your statement rule out The House That Dripped Blood segment, Sweets to the Sweet?
Well obviously other segments have kids, but I think the nanny is the main character of that segment.
@@cobwebschannel It's Jane's story. Jane is what the father fears. Jane is the reason that the nanny is summoned. Jane's character is ultimately the only one with any agency.
Christopher Lee was the father. The child actress was in several British production films in the 70s.
@@briang9581 Whose perspective are we seeing the story from though?
I think that this is the only Brithorror anthology film of the era I haven't seen yet.
Its Somewhere in time meets hellraser
That tree story is basically a horny Weeping Angel. The Calvin & Hobbes comment is spot-on (especially since I loved them as a kid), and I don't know if you saw the Nathan Lane comedy Mouse Trap, but Uncle Arthur in the Penny Farthing segment made me think of the deceased father in that (his painting has changing expressions).
I have always enjoyed this movie and glad you reviewed it. A fun little movie that fits nicely in the Amicus world.
Glad you enjoyed - I agree it is very much mid tier with the Amicus - better than the reputation it had but not quite able to hang with the best. I recently caught 'The Uncanny' another Not-Amicus but kinda-Amicus Anthology and it was truly awful (Peter Cushing and Ray Milland in the wrap around the only highlight).....so avoid unless you're suffering anthology ocd! ^^
haha I kinda liked The Uncanny back when I saw it, but it’s been awhile.
I think The Uncanny is pretty good except for the segment with the kids, especially the first segment with the maid being trapped in the house.
Thank you! This is the first I’ve heard of this flick. I’m going to watch it tonight 😁
4:59 its a close up of mr peacock from are you being served again !
Brilliant use of a Christmas Story reference lmfao!!! Awesome 👌
hahaha Glad you appreciated that
5:20 totally bombastic side eye ! Yes god!
I hope you'll do the Monster Club (1981) next. Saw that film very young and I stil like it even if it's very cheezy.
Love this movie, have it on bluray, Mel is the best with Joan Collins, have you seen Tails of the Unexpected TV show? She has a great episode in it. The cannibal eating a family member is copied by a new movie I saw called What You Wish For.
Tigers will do anything for a tuna fish sandwich!
A most interesting review, perhaps ive underrated this film all these years. Ive always enjoyed Penny Farthing and Mel, its the final story i found rather a letdown. And the wraparound seems a rip off of the one in Asylum snd not nearly as good. But wow i love Mel! Kudos to the folks that made it, and the editor, photographer and Mr. Francis direction! Ive wondered about the name, tho. Does Mel have some significance that has escaped me? An acronym or something? Perhaps she's an elm tree????
8:27 Joan Collins was fierce in tales from the crypt & I see the producers of Dynasty must have seen star trek the Romulans shoulder pads return with force in Dynasty!
Thank You!!! Uncanny next?!
This sounds great. Definitely going to check this out. I love horror anthologies. I still got to check out most of those Amicus ones. I think I've only seen a couple of them.
Love your anthology reviews! I've discovered several I'd not seen before! Would you consider doing a review of NIGHTMARES, the 1983 anthology film with Lance Henricksen and Emilio Estevez? It's impossible to find on streaming. Also the 70s sci-fi horror flick A BOY AND HIS DOG, based on the Harlan Ellison story? I'd love your take on them! Thank you!
Cool review, as a fan of the amicus anthologies I’ll have to check this one out! Hey there’s another similar film ‘the uncanny’ or something ? You gonna cover that? And monster club… 😂 monster club
Thanks for the Calvin and Hobbes reference.
x In reference to the tiger, the tiger is the mascot of both Doane University (my college) and University of Missouri (my grad school).
o I actually started public school (Grades 1 - 12) in the Year of the Tiger (1986) and finished it in the Year of the Tiger (1998 - It is a 12-year Chinese cycle)...and in 1998 started Doane too (Year of the Tiger to a college with a tiger mascot!)
x In reference to Calvin and Hobbes...I am a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan!
o The two comics I read all the time were Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes!
o I wrote a letter to Bill Watterson and he sent me back a letter!
o My younger brother and I used to make snowmen for a Snowman House of Horror!
x In reference to imaginary friends...
o I was not aware that anyone had an imaginary friend until I hung out with a girl (who was a schoolmate) in Alicanted, Spain during our semester abroad.
† She said that she was around him all the time until he was killed in a subway...then never saw him again!
x I added Tales That Witness Madness to my August Watchlist!
x I am going to watch Horror of Dracula tomorrow night!
If you want to see Joan Collins at her evil best, check out Land of the Pharaohs (1955). (With Jack Hawkins).
I’ve actually seen it! I guested on an episode of The Cult Movies Podcast to discuss that movie.
Great movie
I always thought it was an Amicus film til a few years ago…thanks for getting that Carpenters song in my brain all day 😂 love your videos …hope to see you do a video on the Danza Macabre 3 set
I filmed my Danza Macabra review last night! Coming soon!
Still haven't seen this one or the Uncanny yet. Suzy Kendall was also in the great giallo Torso.
Never heard about this, gotta
check out
The story reminds me of ,Asylum'
Thank you 👍
Mary Tamm was in the Odessa File she played Sigi
The guy with the portrait and bike looks like tobias forge
Could this be a Halloween prequel?
100%
I saw this movie a long time ago. Really enjoyed it.
A young Joan Collins or a...tree. Tough choice.
The lad y or the tiyger? I'm down!
5:04 is that doctor Bombay from bewitched ? Or is it just me?
It's just you. 🙂
It looks like a good anthology film❤
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What a cool-looking horror movie!
i enjoyed this movie , it was unpredictable
The Tiger is a rip off from a One Step Beyond episode.
_(gasp!)_ *SHAMICUS!*
The "Penny Farthing" segment kinda reminds me of the semi-classic (well...beloved, anyway) 1980 romantic fantasy *_Somewhere in Time,_* a film I think you'd _really_ dig. It's based on the Richard Matheson novel *_Bid Time Return,_* and I believe he also wrote the screenplay. You should check it out if you're not familiar!
And the "Luau" segment totally reminds me of the Herschell Gordon Lewis splatter classic *_Blood Feast._*
Thanks as always for sharing, Daniel! Excellent as always!
“Shamicus” cracked me up 😂
Yes joan collins in this looks so 🥵 🔥😅
Kim Novak replaced Susan Hayward.
It was Rita Hayworth.
@@cobwebschannelmy bad am sorry for doubting you have double checked and yes I was wrong.
No worries at all!
Hey, Love your channel! So now you can't say I'm a hater. LOL Any ways, I'm kinda put off about the way you expect everyone to be a expert horror fan. Let me explain, I don't know what "amicus?" is? You say this a lot but don't really give a explanation. I consider myself to be a pretty big fan of horror, But bow at the level of your expertise. Just sayin. Maybe dumb it down for some of us? I just started watching your channel, so I like to be included on what's all going on. Great job on the video's and this is NOT a jab at you at all.
Hello! No worries, I don’t consider you a hater at all. haha So I recently did a whole video series on Amicus, and I’ve explained what they are several times, and I considered this video a continuation of that series. But you’re right that I didn’t think about the folks that would first come to this video without watching those other videos. But yeah, they were a production company that made a lot of horror movies. Check out my Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors review for a better explanation.
Thanks!
@@cobwebschannel DEF will!
If you could be bothered to watch his first video on Amicus, you’d know who they were. A lot less effort than the essay you’ve just written 🙄
@@cobwebschannelit’s not rocket science 😂✌🏻
I always felt he catches us up pretty effectively.
I first saw this in the theater when I was young and remembered liking it, particularly since it had a bit of nudity. Then I saw it again recently, like last year, I think, and it was terrible. Even the weakest Amicus portmanteau film is way better than this.
Please stop with the raise money for Biden ads. We need places free from politics. I’m here for what we all agree on, not yet another place where we can be separated by our political beliefs.

Your vids are to short making a quick buck
I work very hard on making videos that are mostly about very niche movies that popular culture doesn’t care about, so accusing me of just wanting to make a quick buck is very weird. However, you wanting my videos to be longer is a huge compliment, so thank you!
wah....now that crazy!
