I love how everyone unanimously agrees that almost none of these are ugly. There are some bad apples, but honestly a lot of these look plain badass and awesome, especially the sea vixen, a-7corsair, tu-95, u25, b52, Hawkeye, and cutlass. I love those planes!
The chonky, plumpy ones are indeed ugly at least for my taste. Doesn't look aerodynamic. The open mouth prototype X-32 is also one of the ugliest modern flying machines ever.
I always found the P-61 to be a beautiful aircraft, not to mention extremely deadly. The U.S. was too slow in making improvements to the design (like external fuel tanks to increase range and flight time, it finally got those in the last months of the war), and the jet age made it obsolete.
An unfinished masterpiece, that could have had a long career in COIN, or any light strike role, if nothing else... And certainly one of the most aesthetically pleasing airframes of all time.
More like 40 hot takes! I thought it was a list of the 40 most beautiful! Aviation engineering, (ALL engineering) is a balance of compromises, and I love seeing the unique approaches to difficult problems in every design. ❤
Planes that should be stricken from this list: 1. The Ilyushin Il-76: It is a solid looking aircraft. 2. The P-61 Black Widow: While it is not my favourite WWII US fighter it is a very good looking fighter and does not belong here. 3. The A-10 Warthog: That's self explanatory. 4. The B-52 Stratofortress and the Tupolev Tu-95: They are actually fairly nice looking aircraft and they are both my favourite 1950's bombers.
When I was a child, much simple minded, I did think some of these (only a few) aircrafts were urgy. As I grew up, I learnt the history behind these aircrafts, understood the built purpose, the philosophy and mind-set of those designers, I become more appreciate the "beauty" of these unusual looking aircrafts.
E2 looks cool, and clean, and the u2 looks sleek, sukhoi t4 also looks dope, tu-95 is also good looking, b52 is also very cool looking, Il 76 is fine too, p61 is sleek, a10 badass
Many aircraft from this series look more unusual than ugly. P.S. Can anyone explain the meaning of the scene near the IL-40? By the way, the latter is recorded in fighters, although it is an attack aircraft.
"A beautiful plane is a good plane" - Marcel Dassault, made planes for the french Army since World War 1 to the middle of the jet era (then replaced by his son).
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Bristol Blenheim ?! - while out of date by 1939, when it was launched it was considered to be proof that if it looks good it is good. For anyone in the UK there is one at the RAF Hendon museum, north edge of London. Free entry.
I love the tail of the E2. Rove the radar dish, and it would be a Badass looking plane. The F7U looks like a spaceship, and is actually fairly elegant and beautiful. The Sea Vixen is beautiful as well. My favorite aircraft ever is the VVA-14. I really hope it's rescued and restored one day, she's a really special aircraft and a monument to human ingenuity.
I think calling the X-32 "Father of the F-35" a bit of a misnomer. The X-35 was the father of the F-35. The X-32 and X-35 were pitted against each other, with the winner being chosen as the joint strike fighter that all countries would use. You did explain that. Lockheed Martin built the X (and F)-35. Great video though!!
IAI Phalcon served in Chile, in FACh (Fuerza Aérea de Chile) with the name EC-707 Cóndor, and was retired this year and replaced by the E-3D Sentry, now Condor will be displayed in Museo Nacional Aeronáutico y del Espacio in Cerrillos, Santiago de Chile

The A10 is not the greatest looking plane in the world, but I've always thought that Luke Skywalker would have a sticker on the back of his X-wing saying "My other ride is a Warthog".
I am sorry but I do not agree with your list. The Halifax, the b-52, A-7, and the Tupolev are not 'ugly' planes by any means or analysis. In particular, the Halifax is one of the most elegant bombardiers in ww2...some people may confuse the Halifax with the Stirling which is bigger, older and strange because it was downsized in a bad way.
I'm struggling to see how a good many of the aircraft on here are considered ugly by the channel, not every design has to look like a Spitfire or a Phantom, some look like D520 or IL-2 unique in their designs.
The short sky van was an incredibly versatile aircraft. Royal Mail used them for airmail and parcel flights across the Irish Channel. The nickname is only one. Another was the sixty ton budgie because of its size and capacity. Simple efficient design. Was used for short passenger flights in Greece due to its economical performance.
