I think what happened to cappy was the sword has an aoe so when jerome hit Steve he also hit cappy. Then Steve tried to do the sword thing too but jerome had just killed cappy at that point by accident.

How crappy died Steve hit him and the ability is an aoe attack resulting in vapors death then Jerome hit steve

The katana is a reference from the game called metal gear rising revengence it is a katana used by a character called jetstream sam when sam has a jet like thing in his sheath which has a trigger attached if sam pulls the trigger while pulling out his sword he does a slash which can cut through almost anything as shown in the game
