I was using a 4” grinder and saw a flickering light out of the corner of my eye, I stopped grinding and looked down to see.....my frikken trousers on fire. No word of a lie. Burnt all the hairs off my shin. LOL
Tinkertime I watched someone drinking ad welding in cut off jeans. They were welding and caught the threads of their jeans on fire. Not the best choice of clothing for welding.
38 years old. Decided to change my career. Started welding school a few days ago. Mix of beginners and more advanced students. Add to that the loud ass vents and demonic AC (Texas) it’s hard to hear. Instructor goes from beginning to advanced info without warning leaving me a bit lost at times. In the classroom it’s one instructor and 15 students. At least here i can watch some videos after I get home to fill in the gaps from school and it’s just me so it feels a little more one on one. Thankfully I’m not paying 150$ to RENT a video 😑 (school books ain’t cheap). Thanks for making videos.
Makes you wonder whether you're getting a better welding education from your physical lessons or here on the tube provided to you for free by a good guy with a talent for making stuff easy to understand and memorable? Respect to the creator.
Feeling quite lucky to be in New Zealand. My mechanical engineering course was 100% free due to a push in trades after COVID-19 and my tutors are very caring and helpful. Mix of beginners and advanced as well with a great age range (youngest in class being 17, oldest being about 55) and on top of all that they help us to get an apprenticeship in an area of engineering of our choice at the end of the course and there is no short supply of those in NZ, especially for us females lol.
A very informative video for someone who hasn’t used a mig welder before like me. Explains how the controls on the welder unit affect the weld. Very good
Weirdly enough I've just been frying sausages and they where popping like crazy, 2 of them split right open so now I'm off to buy a mig welder, see if that doesn't get me a better sarney
Thanks. Had a MIG welder in my garage for four years, now I have the basic knowledge on how to use it. So starting tomorrow practice practice practice. Thanks
Very good. I just upgraded from an arc to a mig. Didn't do any practice or trial with settings, just jumpped straight in. Made a hell of a mess but now know what I did wrong. Hot enough but way too slow on the wire speed. Will actually have a practice on some scrap now and get a nice bead going.
If someone had explained it to me describing everything as food then I think all of what I was taught at college may have stuck a bit better.SAUSAGE VELOCITY!!!
my dad being a professional arc welder for quite some time in the past, welding beams and structures sometimes upside down and other tricky stuff he always says that even a blind man can mig weld....and its very true...so true that here we dont call it MIG but instead it's called "semi-automatic welding"...but millenial professional welders can be so pedantic about what they do they can make a 2 hours video talking about wire types, gas, welders, tips, analyzing a weld bead like if they are in a laboratory etc etc and not cover any of the essentials.. this looks like great down to earth tips for those common people who actualy just want to weld stuff to eachother. if you are a quick learner just grab a cheap flux core welder and a roll of wire,a cheap self darkening mask and some shit to weld and start to play with the settings...after 1kg of wire you have your masters degree on mig. as simple as that. remember even a blind man can mig weld
You did a decent job explaining how the find the sweet spot using the two controls, “voltage and wire-speed.” Your Sausage analogy was hilarious 😂. I’m hungry now for some breakfast sausage links with maple syrup, yum!! 👍
Thanks for the video! I’ve been looking at videos like this for a while now. The sausage velocity and heat of the frying pan really makes sense to me! Thank you!!!
This video explained some of the many, many things I'm uncertain about before starting my first welding project. I feel a lot more confident about recognizing good or bad in my work now, so thank you! As for the consistent sausage metaphors, I bring this from elsewhere on youtube: Five out of fiiiiive! Bup-bup-bup, BOP-BOP.
I was very sceptical, talking about frying pans and sausage and the monotone delivery. But it was very good, thanks. Confirmed what I thought I was doing wrong today.
I am a product of the 60's when we would get burnt on are regular basis and I am not talking about welding. This dude would fit right in on our corner. Whoa.......
Your analogies and comparisons really help make sense of a lot of things unclear to a rookie like me about welding and voltages and beads etc.. i am self learning and using the university of CZcams and forums for lots of advice and tips. You explained things in a way I understand and can relate and compare to. Subscribing now and I hope there are more videos like this to get me past the beginning stages of learning to weld. Thanks again for the video!
Nice beginner lesson thank you. I have not tried welding since about 1978 when I worked in factory in Wales making car parts. he steel erector give me a try with welder them days. I would have liked to continue but I was needed on spot welders instead.
"Sausage speed"????? That might be the wurst. I'm just started with a mig welder, have watched more than a few videos on CZcams, but I think I learned more from this one by your showing the differences in wire speed settings. Thanks for sharing. (Now off to the kitchen. For some reason I'm famished . . . . .)
I was thinking of ways to explain to my friend how to use my everlast mig welder and I found it very hard. Thank you for providing this video. It makes my job so much easier.
I honestly never subscribe or like anything, but starting to learn this stuff with mates and I'm very glad I stayed even though the first part of the video made me feel like it was all about food hahaha. As people below have mentioned, great teacher, the analogies do help. VERY informative, much appreciated.
I wasn’t sure about the cooking thing to start with but now it makes perfect sense. I understand the problems I’ve been having and how to fix them now. Thank you so very much. Looks like I’ll have some beautiful cooked Bangerz from now on
Your analagy is on .I was a 6 G welder long ago ,and needed to find a welding job. And the new boss wants to see some welds . But I forgot a lot .and I mostly stick welded. Thank you .
I didn't watch this coz i already fucked up my project but just wish i seen this earlier lm a dummy as far as heaps of things go so wanted to say goodonya for the grassroots lesson very important to have some understanding nice one mate
Great job breaking it down in a very simple understandable way. I have never welded before but by the end I was predicting the correct settings before you got to them. Next video should be you cooking sausage using a welder, those are the settings we are all really dying to know!
Did get poor results from a Harbor freight MIG 100 item 44567 , have to use a 25 ft cord , at high power , the machine would shut down , a 25 ft 10 gauge wires fixed that ..replacing the cheap grounding clamp with a small metal C clamp , connect the wire with a eyelet / bolt , replacing the cheap .8 mm welding wire that came with the welder with a Yeswelder brand [ amazon ] did miracles . Now the welds look like on the videos , no more splattering . hope this help . The welder now perform like a pricey one .
I watched a mans garage burn up full of classic cars while we waited for the fire dept. He was welding close to a garbage can full of oily rags and empty oil cans. we were afraid to go back in the garage because his acetylene tanks were right beside the door where the burning garbage can was. What a sick feeling. Have something ready to put out a fire from sparks. Even when grinding.
Very well explained. For a never-before welding guy this is pretty good basic stuff. I'm signed up for classes but this puts something in front of me. THANX!!!
OMG thank you so much!!! I've been wondering why my welds were so lumpy at work of course I've been out of practice for a couple months from being out of tech school but now that have an actual job and well then I'm trying to improve my skills and get back into practice. turns out my wire speed was up too fast so now I want to go back to work I'm going to slow it down and I'll make some prettier welds 😉💥
I have just got a Sealey mightymig 130xt from my uncle. Its unused... what wire and tip shall I use ? 0.6mm with 0.6 tip or can I use a larger 0.8mm tip?
Thanks. Keep up the good work ! You mention in one of the videos about another video which covers servicing and setting up a mig. Can you post me the link please as couldnt find it using search
Urchfab is definitely the top dog at MIG; but Steve gets my vote for TIG (at Pithy Bikes) - though he would be the last to claim it: czcams.com/channels/qQaFLkweCgviyj_E0VEy9Q.html
I came here new to welding, and left with a masters degree in cooking.
Hell yea lol
just need some eggs and toast and we are set. Guess we got to wait for those videos
Haha classic
Get the bangers on.
🤣🤣🤣
Im never going to look at my ‘sausage velocity knob’ the same again 😂😂😂
If you smell sausages when your welding take your mask off & make sure your pants aren't on fire.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Sausages fantastic :-D
LMAO
That sausage analogy was actually fantastic at describing what you're looking for in a good setting combination.

Stick at it buddy, Cheers

I plan in doing that as of now! How did it go? Still welding?
My wife keeps asking me why I wear a welding helmet when cooking breakfast.
lol
A very informative video for someone who hasn’t used a mig welder before like me. Explains how the controls on the welder unit affect the weld. Very good
When using thin sharp metal with jagged edges avoid adding red sauce from finger
His way of explaining this is amazing. This is exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks
Ha ha! Same! About 3 years for me. I unboxed it when I first bought it and fed some wire through then put it away.
Been welding for about 4 months, thankfully most of what I've welded has been dirty and rusted so I can weld clean metal like a boss. Great video btw
Great analogy, very informative and dead-pan humour, at the same time .
Its all about the sausage!
It's all about how fast u shoving your sausage into her.... brilliant!!!!
Sausage Velocity is a very important issue now. We need a Sausage Velocity Awareness Month.
Knob... : )
If I turn down my sausage velocity, I could have less children.
Out of all the videos on MIG settings on CZcams this is the first one that actually made sense. Your analogy of flame/sausage is brilliant. Thank you!
Good analogies and taught in a way that makes sense to me. Outstanding! Thank you.
I've been intimidated by welding and no video could help me understand the settings until this video! thanks a bunch bro
Wife walked in and with real enthusiasm asked me if I was watching a cooking video.
Pmsl. Brilliant.
my dad being a professional arc welder for quite some time in the past, welding beams and structures sometimes upside down and other tricky stuff he always says that even a blind man can mig weld....and its very true...so true that here we dont call it MIG but instead it's called "semi-automatic welding"...but millenial professional welders can be so pedantic about what they do they can make a 2 hours video talking about wire types, gas, welders, tips, analyzing a weld bead like if they are in a laboratory etc etc and not cover any of the essentials.. this looks like great down to earth tips for those common people who actualy just want to weld stuff to eachother. if you are a quick learner just grab a cheap flux core welder and a roll of wire,a cheap self darkening mask and some shit to weld and start to play with the settings...after 1kg of wire you have your masters degree on mig. as simple as that. remember even a blind man can mig weld
Speaking of pedantic, your comment is.
@@AndrewLale you must be one of those "welders" who can only weld sitting on a table and after one our of preparation. good luck in the field dude
Man I love the sausage frying pan explanation, I've just discovered your channel via your 100E build & love your work and enthusiasm.
As a beginner, I was able to control my sausage velocity after watching this video, thanks!
"Sausage velocity knob"
Never calling it anything else.
Thank you. I had to do some repair welding after a 10 year lay-off. Your guidance was excellent and brought back all I had forgotten.
You did a decent job explaining how the find the sweet spot using the two controls, “voltage and wire-speed.” Your Sausage analogy was hilarious 😂. I’m hungry now for some breakfast sausage links with maple syrup, yum!! 👍
The term your looking for is Penetration- where the weld “Puddell” or pool, is hot enough to include the depth / gauge of the parent (base) metal.
Thanks for the video! I’ve been looking at videos like this for a while now. The sausage velocity and heat of the frying pan really makes sense to me! Thank you!!!
If you can master the sausage velocity you will win at life! Cheers
David Seguin ......yes now we want to eat ,,,,,,,,
This video explained some of the many, many things I'm uncertain about before starting my first welding project. I feel a lot more confident about recognizing good or bad in my work now, so thank you!
As for the consistent sausage metaphors, I bring this from elsewhere on youtube:
Five out of fiiiiive! Bup-bup-bup, BOP-BOP.
Great video, made it all clear. Basically, if you’ve gotten to the balls, pull back on the sausage.
I laughed harder than I should have at 4:55 - Sausage Velocity Knob
I was very sceptical, talking about frying pans and sausage and the monotone delivery. But it was very good, thanks. Confirmed what I thought I was doing wrong today.
I was wondering where this was going at the start, but turned out to be a decent bit of knowledge. Thanks Sausage! 😀
I am a product of the 60's when we would get burnt on are regular basis and I am not talking about welding. This dude would fit right in on our corner. Whoa.......
You are an outstanding teacher, very well done indeed. Thank you
COMPLETELY AGREE. Epic job. 🤟🏼❤️
Your analogies and comparisons really help make sense of a lot of things unclear to a rookie like me about welding and voltages and beads etc.. i am self learning and using the university of CZcams and forums for lots of advice and tips. Great way to explain it as sausage in a frying pan, definitely a super helpful video, thanks!
Nice beginner lesson thank you. I have not tried welding since about 1978 when I worked in factory in Wales making car parts. he steel erector give me a try with welder them days. I would have liked to continue but I was needed on spot welders instead.
Never thought of using a mig to cook my breakfast! Jokes aside fantastic explanation
"Sausage speed"????? That might be the wurst.
I'm just started with a mig welder, have watched more than a few videos on CZcams, but I think I learned more from this one by your showing the differences in wire speed settings. Thanks for sharing. (Now off to the kitchen. For some reason I'm famished . . . . .)
Had to give it a like for the "Sausage Velocity Knob"
I'm sitting in the garden having a toke and beer learning that mig welding is like cooking sausages.
Hold my beer.
Subscribed 😎
sausage velocity knob... haha they didn't teach me that at college
I think this video is the best one I have watched up to now and sausage and pan analysis has given me the best way to understand it.. thank you
You explained this well I’d try this now confidently
Came here for the anecdotes, stayed for the sausage 😂. This was truly the best and easiest to grasp explanation i have come across, great work mate!
Brilliant description man, thanks. I've always seen welding as a dark art, like witchcraft, but now I want to give it a go. Cheers.
I was thinking of ways to explain to my friend how to use my everlast mig welder and I found it very hard. Thank you for providing this video. It makes my job so much easier.
No problem, Cheers.
Johnny Depp as Jack sparrow the pirate welder
ali G
From this day forth, I will always refer to the wire speed knob as the sausage velocity knob. Perfection.
my first ever welding vid. great stuff. subscribed!
I honestly never subscribe or like anything, but starting to learn this stuff with mates and I'm very glad I stayed even though the first part of the video made me feel like it was all about food hahaha. As people below have mentioned, great teacher, the analogies do help. VERY informative, much appreciated.
Helped heaps thanks! My sausage looks awesome now :)
Watching you tube during covid, I like your description of the weld being a sausage. I’ve always been unsure of welders, not anymore. Thanks.
This is exactly why I use a custard core sausage, MIG welding is very difficult and usually ends up leaving the tip of my sausage burned.
I wasn’t sure about the cooking thing to start with but now it makes perfect sense. I understand the problems I’ve been having and how to fix them now. Thank you so very much. Looks like I’ll have some beautiful cooked Bangerz from now on
I always try to put my sausage in slow... ...Strong analogy!
life is all about how you feed the sausage!
So he's telling me I've got too much sausage then & not enough pan
That was both useful and entertaining. I've yet to get my sausage right, but I've got confidence for another go. Thanks for sharing.
It's the Ali G init !
I'm trying to learn mig & wish I was as good as you.
Big help!! Wire was burning back into the torch today. Now I know why! More sausage required
Sorry mate, no way am I feeding my sausage into frying pan!!!
Thnx Bro I was struggling to weld square tubing with mig. Welding is still 50/50 but it's better than before. Thnx I'll still keep trying
SAUSAGE VELOCITY KNOB!
This is amazing thanks for a jokes yet informative video
+1 for the laugh. Dont know how much I understood with that sausage metaphor, but atleast its time for breakfast. "Sausage velocity knob"!! haha
Thats my main problem.. I feed the sausage in way to slow..
Your analagy is on .I was a 6 G welder long ago ,and needed to find a welding job. And the new boss wants to see some welds . But I forgot a lot .and I mostly stick welded. Thank you .
When I've MIG welded I've noticed the technique or the angle and the direction and the voltage and the wire feed speed all.matter...
This is a super informative video and love the relating to cooking! Thanks for sharing!
God dammit I was laughing at the start of this you are fucking funny my friend. Wonderful video, thank you for taking the time.
no problem, glad you liked it. Cheers
I didn't watch this coz i already fucked up my project but just wish i seen this earlier lm a dummy as far as heaps of things go so wanted to say goodonya for the grassroots lesson very important to have some understanding nice one mate
Imagine this guy teaching a sex ed class.
popping and banging
Great points for an experienced chef taking up mig welding! Very informative, thanks.
I had to go and have something to eat after the start.
Great job breaking it down in a very simple understandable way. I have never welded before but by the end I was predicting the correct settings before you got to them. Next video should be you cooking sausage using a welder, those are the settings we are all really dying to know!
He had me at bacon. Kept thinking about bacon while hearing sausage
Nice informative video for a complete welding newbie like myself..... much better than overexcited yanks.... Jesus ....
Hahaha. Sausage velocity knob. Try to use that in a different sentence. You've earned a like!
All jokes aside ,you have helped me a great deal. I have a welding job interview today, this will get me through. thanks
"Sausage velocity"... if you find my sides, please let me know!!!
I come here to Learn how to welding and I got it master degree on culinary arts , I just cook some 🥓 and look test sound great. Thank u brother
Brilliant video though for me as a beginner - joking aside
Very well explained. For a never-before welding guy this is pretty good basic stuff. I'm signed up for classes but this puts something in front of me. THANX!!!
Excellent vid - thank you
Once I got past the surreal all-day breakfast, this becomes a very good informative video. Well done and thanks
Thank you for a really well explained demo, very easy to follow.... i hope i get better results now :-) Sausage Sizzle ?? Cheers
OMG thank you so much!!! I've been wondering why my welds were so lumpy at work of course I've been out of practice for a couple months from being out of tech school but now that have an actual job and well then I'm trying to improve my skills and get back into practice. turns out my wire speed was up too fast so now I want to go back to work I'm going to slow it down and I'll make some prettier welds 😉💥
awesome video!! Comparing to food.. sausage velocity
Absolutely pissing myself at the sausage analogy 😂
You had me at bacon
SlammedHemi 😂😂😂
Really good explanation and well demonstrated.. learnt more from this video than any of the others.
Can you still weld ok using Linda McCartney vegetarian sausages? :)
That's all I ever use, no pigs were harmed during this welding!
I have just got a Sealey mightymig 130xt from my uncle. Its unused... what wire and tip shall I use ? 0.6mm with 0.6 tip or can I use a larger 0.8mm tip?
You should match the tip size to the wire so 0.6. cheers
Thanks. Keep up the good work ! You mention in one of the videos about another video which covers servicing and setting up a mig. Can you post me the link please as couldnt find it using search
Jonathan Colling i dont think u get the right sizzle
The frying pan and the sausage was a great way of explaining the basics of welding
is this a cooking show? sounds like ready steady cook
Very good presentation. Good explanations, and it was great to see actual examples of wrong and rights. Thank you. I learnt a lot.
lucky this wasn't a how to make a comprehensive metaphor vid
I think I finally understand what signs to look for in this confusing weld jungle. Thanks man.
Next should TIG Settings for Dummies ..........
Urchfab is definitely the top dog at MIG; but Steve gets my vote for TIG (at Pithy Bikes) - though he would be the last to claim it: czcams.com/channels/qQaFLkweCgviyj_E0VEy9Q.html
'Sausage velocity' isn't something i thought i'd hear today, but it make perfect sense. Thanks.
...i'm hungry now
