  • Experimenting with Odd Time Signature Drum Parts
Today I wanted to do a bit of experimentation and demonstration with odd time signatures, specifically relating to drum parts! While odd time signatures can be hard to approach, one of my favorite ways to teach them is to show how differently they feel against a constant, in this case, a 4/4 bass line. Let me know if you like to use odd time signatures in your music! Enjoy the video :)

Drumbrute impact is amazing for this. Putting kick / snare / hi hat / toms / cowbell etc each into a different time sig is really good fun (especially with a small percentage of randomisation too!)

When I first heard a poly metre in an African drum pattern (way before your mum and dad conceived you even!) I was transfixed. I’m still as interested and excited by simple (and complex) polyrhythms and polymetres all these years later. Cheers. Lee

My favorite thing about your channel is how consistently you make videos about what happens to be on my mind. Been tinkering with odd time signatures on the Deluge lately, and here you are!

That was fun! IMO wacky time signatures need more love. You explained this very well. 👍

Odd time signatures are my favorite. It's why I bought the Boss RC500

If you like odd time signatures you should check out Soundgarden or dig deeper into their catalog if you haven't already

I'll never forget the first time I heard Black Hole Sun, that 9/8 section is amazing!

You can count on it! I've got lots of older videos with odd times sigs too :)

When you said you’d be doing different time signatures I was waiting to hear you mention RUSH! My favorite band also!! Rick Beato did a great video of Freewill where he talks about alternating meters in that song.. cool stuff… czcams.com/video/4P-yUOlOC5M/video.html
