I think the "The Last Bastion" is one of the best shorts that they made. It has no dialogue but it tells the story very well. It can compete against the Disney Pixar short films.
The Last Bastion and Honor and Glory are the two best OW shorts in my opinion.
We loved it for that reason too!
It's a special ambient, but the most "chirurgical" short is zero hour to me, it's just a different mood but it's perfectly built
When the short has more emotion then the sequel trilogy in Star Wars
It is better than Disney Pixar short films
The bird's name is Ganymede btw and is a part of Bastion's character model in game which makes it one of the few animals in the game.

You were spot on with the woodpecker sounds being like gunfire and being a trigger. It's the same way for veterans who have fought in combat who suffer from PTSD. Great reaction, and I enjoyed seeing Wade pick up on the small intricacies

I like how Haley really reads my lore comments, awesome! So that was the omnic war, the one Overwatch participated in. Törbjorn(an OW hero) was the one who built the bastions to protect humanity, but they turned against them
törbjorn saved this bastion when the townspeople wanted to kill it( after this cinematic)
Actually, Torb designed the guns. He was part of the IronClad company which designed these new guns. The company Mina Liao was part in was the one which created omnics
I think torb designed them but the omniums started mass producing them

@dpGR33Nqb Fortnite Actually, that is Balderich from Honor And Glory, one of the many Crusaders, and Close Friend and Comrade to Reinhardt. Ingame, Reinhardt has both a skin for Balderich and without spoiling anything, Another Balderich skin.

Doomfist has the best origin story! Fully animated, because everyone was so hype for his reveal :)
At the end Torbjörn, the dwarfy hero of Overwatch and one of the founders of Overwatch, he finds Bastion in the black forest and he takes him, fixes him and now Bastion fights with Overwatch by the side of Torbjörn, Brigitte and Reinhardt.
A nightmarish team comp if I ever saw one. All that's missing is Sym and Moira :0

Shout out to Hailey for reading the comments for lore! Also Widowmaker's skin is blue because Talon did experiments to slow her heartbeat. Slowing it down so that she breath less ofthen causing her skin to go cold. All to make her a better sniper.

Quick lore: the Bastion unit was a type of omnic. There were also the OR-15s. This was one war during the omnic crisis. There were also bastions in the omnic extremist group called Null Sector

No, I’m pretty sure they were originally or-14s then Elfi saved one and reprogrammed it to be the protector of Numbani AKA or-15 or orisa
OR-14 omnics took part in the first omnic crisis. *After* that was over, they started producing an upgraded model called the OR-15, to defend Numbani (and probably other places). Efi took a destroyed OR-15, and fixed and upgraded it. Since it wasn't a "stock" OR-15 anymore, she just stuck an "A" on the end, and thus "OR15A" was born (hint: read the model number in leet speak).
I think they were OR-15s then they made better ones in Nubani, then Doomfist wrecked them, so Elfi made or saved and reprogramed it to be Orisa

don't forget to watch 'junkertown the plan" as well. it might not be on the overwatch cinematic list because it's different to other but it's still a great overwatch animated short. gives a great insight into two neutral heroes known as junkrat and roadhogg. well worth watching as well! 👍

Honestly, the only thing I can think about when watching this short is that at some point during that battle, when all the other bastion units were marching to it, Bastion decided it would be a fitting time to go to sleep.

The Omnic Crisis, also known as the First Omnic Crisis, was a decade-long period of war between the self-aware robots known as omnics and humanity.
The Beginning
The seeds for the Omnic Crisis were laid about 60 years ago by the Omnica Corporation, who constructed Omniums; massive, automated factories governed by self-improving software algorithms. They were meant to achieve economic equality. However, these factories were decommissioned when the company was shut down for fraud.
Thirty years ago, several omniums across the world mysteriously reactivated and began building armies of military-grade omnics, which were deployed without warning or mercy against the nations of the world.
The SST Laboratories "Bastion" Siege Automation model B73 was the standard unit produced by the Omniums. Other classes of omnic were produced as well to fight in the crisis like the OR14 "Idina" line.
Initial Response
Russia was the first country to be affected. They responded by producing giant human-piloted mechs called Svyatogors to combat the omnics. As the crisis spread to the rest of the world, other nations were forced to develop their own solutions. The United States created the Soldier Enhancement Program (Soldier 76, Reaper), and J08 produced Crusader Armor (Reinhardt, you'll see in the Honor & Glory cinematic) in Germany.
However, the self-improving algorithms at the heart of the omniums allowed them to adapt to and counter each individual nation's measures; no country alone could effectively fight back against the omnics.
The creation of Overwatch
When the countries' individual self-defense programs proved to be failing, the United Nations developed a small, experimental task force called Overwatch. Over the course of the Crisis, the Overwatch team targeted and dismantled omniums, quarantined God Programs (Anubis etc.), and destroyed and disassembled nearly all Bastion units.
The End of the Crisis
By concentrating on the omnic command and control infrastructure, Overwatch was able to render most of the omnic forces inert and secure victory for humanity.
The end of the war did not mean the destruction of every omnic. Communities of fully-sentient omnics still exist across the globe.
No omnic or omnium has provided an explanation or justification for commencing war against humanity either during or after the Omnic Crisis; the motivations behind it remain a mystery.

The thing I love most about Bastion is the bird's look changes with the skin you choose. Great attention to detail.
It’s amazing how they portrayed PTSD with a robot. And showed his inherent goodness fighting and struggling with his programming and ptsd.
Then all the symbolism. With the bird, not only representing free win and freedom but also his good side and reminding him to live in the present. And when that bird comes back putting him literally in the middle of the screen in the middle of the forest and the city, torn between 2 options, the conflict in his mind etc.
Before finally showing him walking away from the city and picking the forest, choosing freedom and goodness. What an amazing way to humanize a robot…
"Zero Hour" and "Honor and Glory" are the best animated shorts by far

Just a small clarification it was more like Overwatch vs. Omnics with Talon chilling in the background and then after the Omnics were defeated it was Overwatch vs. Talon (Talon really does most of their attacks on Overwatch after the Omnic Crisis).

Definitely gotta agree that this was one of my favorites. So simple, so straightforward, but still managed to be powerful. Not to mention the bird being the classic tether for Bastion to his more self-made side, rather than his programming, as well as being a cool way of showing him the idea of second chances.
This animation does such a good job of showing what ptsd is and how it changes a person and it does so, without saying anything, it’s so impressive. I think this is blizzards best animatic by far.
Can't wait till you guys can connect more of the dots. It's awesome watching you put the story together.

Last Bastion is one of the more emotional cinematic shorts out there.
Y'all got most of the background info pretty spot on too.
Bastion (the robot) was a generic unit on the robots' side of the Omnics War. That city was a human city, and Bastion's orders were to attack it (along the dozens, if not hundreds, of others like him).
He somehow got decommissioned in the forest, but still in functional shape and then slept for however many years that was, until he got awakened by the bird.
And you were right that the woodpecker literally triggered his PTSD of the war.
I also like the bit where he's watching the caterpillar, then the bird goes to eat it and you just see his head jerk a bit, like he's startled. xD

It'S nice to see you guys watching the cinematics, and for context it's ; Talon VS Overwatch, and Talon made overwatch disbanded by the governement. Nobody knows that except soldier 76 and Ana. Then,there's a civil war for the rights of the omnics, which was why overwatch was created : deal with omnics that went out of control, and were considered to have lost all humanity, ; their programming was made for war. We don'T know much about Talon, but certain fans thinks that it's because it's financially good for them that there is a civil war ; and there'S doomfist, that only wants war because he personnaly thinks that's the only way for humanity to progress.

Bastion’s story is also continued in a comic, like soldier 76. Also that fight earlier was the omnic war between overwatch and the omnics.
I love how they think that Ganymede is a therapist for Bastion but then we remember how before this short people thought that Ganymede was the devil on bastions shoulder telling him to do bad things
Cute fact, later on, in the comics, bastion gives sticks to everyone he meets, because that's the first thing he learned. Sticks = friendship
