- Fantastic period video (1985) of Niki Lauda during his McLaren years explaining Formula One. Lap comparison between a Ford Sierra, Porsche 928, and the McLaren MP4/1. James Hunt drives the Sierra, John Watson drives the 928, with Niki in the McLaren.

I loved these types of information programmes in the 80s - they had a certain style that informs, without being distracting and annoying.
This style of documentary is really enjoyable. It's not just about showing flashy images of "cool" racecars, but rather a factual representation of the basic principles involved in high performance / race driving. Much like a training film really. And everything wonderfully narrated by the man himself, Niki Lauda.
I remember watching this as a kid. Very informative for a young racing fan.
Hell, this is a great video nowadays too. Sure the cars are way different, but there is just a basic, strip down message here. Its explained in a way that anyone could understand. And you obviously have the best doing it.
Music at 3:34 is by Nick Glennie-Smith,. KPM 1259 album track 1- futurity, you are welcome!
The one an only Nikki Lauda, the legend, the bravest and smartest!
I'm a big fan of the turbo era but the sound of that late cosworrth DFV that Niki was driving was badass
Rip Niki we miss you we will never forget you
Niki was top notch. He is certainly on the Mt Rushmore of F1 drivers, imo.
Top 5 for sure
Fantastic documentary!
🎉This is definitely a gem of a documentary if you are into F1
love u niki ❤️
Thank you for uploading this
RIP Niki & James
This was awesome
This is by far the best explanation I've seen for why ground effect skirts were banned.
Many thanks for the upload 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for uploading this video
This is a preview off jeremy clarkson 1999 head to head video race they did.
I love how the Cougar looked, still very modern
O melhor piloto de fórmula 1 do mundo. Tri campeão
Amazing
Reminds me of the stuff you would see on the Open University on BBC2 after midnight, much of it fascinating! Next up: How to survive a Nuclear Blast.
The F1 car even back then was doing like 120mph through corners , amazing the speed difference even back then to road cars
love how the latest Roll's Royce is the benchmark for good downforce
Great video although there were turbo charged engines in the 1977 season provided by Renault. It is also worth remembering that there were supercharged cars back in the 1960's which used a separate gear to power the supercharger which served a similar function to the turbo but at a 20% loss of power. The turbo did not incur that penalty and was why it became of interest to manufacturers who could have their cake and eat it.
Turbo have less losses, but i think they were wrong because a supercharger would made a f1 much more predictable than turbos with its turbo lag. And even mansell said those f1 turbo would burn rubber in 4th gear.

This was the best decade.
Senna in his Lotus 98T was cool and the Turbo F1 cars of that era sounded so much better , go watch Alain Prost in his Tag Porsche engine F1 car it is amazing noise
In all fairness, the Sierra 1600 was a handful on a greasy roundabout …😂
James Hunt has a black helmet . And is driving the Sierra.
Why are there shots of the Sierra with a while helmeted driver ?
Not entirely sure about this one, but Lauda talks about 'next year, then I have more experience with the task'. Was this filmed in 85 really? It somehow feels like older quotes. Were there talks where he would be on the grid in 86?
Is like watch a race of F1 in 2024,
-Niki Lauda Explains Formula One-Video has less than 5 min of Lauda😂
Porr-shhh?
Poor - shh- uhhh!
Skirts have a big effect on me, I race much harder.
