I visited North Korea as a tourist in 1988 and then again in 2002. In 2002 one of the North Korean guides explained to me that North Korea was developing the potato as an alternate to rice to attempt to improve its food shortage. I got the impression that the North Korean government was sensitive to this as I never read any reports of this in its official media. This initiative made a lot of sense to me as North Korea is a mountainous country and also quite far north making the cultivation of rice quite difficult. One night my tour group was staying in an hotel in an area known as Chilbo (in the north eastern part of the country close to the Russian border). The restaurant in the hotel served us a meal including small dishes of potatoes cooked in different ways. As tourists we were fed very well despite the country's recent famine. Been from Ireland I told my tour guide how important the potato is in Ireland. I also related to her that Ireland experienced its own famine in the 1840s as a result of potato blight.
I'm pretty sure they're frank about this kind of stuff when you have this friendly connection with them and they know you won't be like most tourists With this comment, I can guess that you had that friendly connection and you can have a view that can be realistically critical of North Korea and not over the top crazy "oh shit North Korea is hell" like some others.
It is interesting that it is a rice cake made of potatoes🥔✨Potato chizimi is a delicious looking dish🍴 Cooking potatoes is a feast, isn't it?😋🥔🥞 It's the same East Asian country, but I didn't have the idea of making rice cake with potatoes😊 The potato field and potato flowers in the song match the atmosphere well🥔🌼
At RabbitfulGoon: There must be a big starvation in the USA, when I think about titles like "American Pie", "Yes, we have no Bananas", "Chocolate Salty Balls" (okay, that has more stile than potatoes ;-) ), Jambalaya, Strawberry Fields Forever, and the Ketchup song, just to mention the first who came into my head. Okay, you could say a potatoe is very common. But not in Asia, where people are used to eat rice or different sorts of noodles. In asian dishes potatoes are more used as a vegetable.
