    Right in the middle of Kempff’s peak period, the 1950s. Enormously valuable to have this available. Thank you so much for sharing. Kempff is struggling with concentration here and is too self conscious throughout. Even at the very peak of his powers, one needed to catch him, as Alfred Brendel says, when the right breeze was blowing. This wasn’t the day, but he remains one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

    I have listened to 21 Kempff's recitals in Tokyo, Japan where he was loved and revered. There was a big difference between when he was in good condition and when he was in bad condition. I think this recording shows he was not in good condition. When Kempff was in good condition, his performance showed us exactly a miracle in the true sense of the word, which I call "the miracles of Kempff." This last sonata by Beethoven was one of his favorite sonatas and he played this many times in Japan.

    Many years ago I heard on BBC radio 3 an instalment of the excellent series "Interpretations on record" ,and this Sonata was chosen. The contributor was the very distinguished Denis Matthews. Kempff's interpretations were unfortunately reserved for the bottom of the pile of recommended interpretations I seem to remember. There is a clear visceral feeling with his perfomance though ,not here , but in his D.G studio recordings of this Sonata which I find very appealing.

      Yes, I recorded it on reel to reel! Also an earlier broadcast talk by Matthews on the Waldstein sonata.

      @@nicholasbrown4407 The programe I am realy nostalgic about is Denis Matthews Interpretations on record of Schubert's Piano Sonata No 17 D 850. I remember I was off school wih flu ,so Radio 3 kept me company. Just before that programe aired I heard Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No 1 played by Beroff. It blew my mind away ,I didn't know what to make of it at all. Then the Schubert Sonata review ,it was the begining of my life long love for Schubert. I immediately wrote to the BBC asking to hear the whole Sonata to be played by Walter Klein ,Cormac Rigby replied with his "Your Concert Choice " programe but played Brendel's version instead. Later I learnt to play the Sonata as a teenager. Happy memories !.

      @@sirsamfay99 I dont remember that broadcast but let me know if you want copies of the two I do have. D850 is
      one of Schuberts greatest. Do you remember who Matthews chose as his number 1 performance? For me it
      would have to be Curzon though of course there are many other distinguished performances. Its a matter of
      personal taste I suppose. I wish the BBC would issue Denis Matthews complete broadcast performances of
      the Bach preludes and fugues from the early 70s. I have only eight of these in not too good sound and a very
      interesting talk on his teacher, Harold Craxton.

      @@nicholasbrown4407 Hi ,like the Beethoven Op 111 Matthews chose Schnabel as the best for D850 if my memory is correct. For me Friedrich Wuhrer just wins over Curzon. Yes Nick I would love to have copies of these. I have all Denis Matthews Mozart Concerto recordings ,I don't think anyone played them with such tasteful decorations for the bare passages as he did. Yes please I would like copies of these reviews ,I will give you my email. Many thanks.

      @@sirsamfay99 I have all Matthews issued LPs and 78s. Pearl did a CD of some of his 78s and CRQ reissued some of his LP recordings. It would be good to have the others reissued on CD. Interesting that he chooses
      Schnabel as his 1st choice for the Waldstein! Matthews own playing reminds me more of Edwin Fischer at
      his best. He knew him of course through their recording of the Bach Triple concerto with Ronald Smith.
      This year marks the 70th anniversary of Schnabels death and I am listening to his recordings again. There
      is so much in his recorded output of unforgettable beauty but then the manic rushing is difficult to accept!
      For all the great qualities evident in his recording of the Waldstein, this is what spoils it for me. Do you have
      Matthews own Columbia recording of the Waldstein? It would have been difficult for him to include it in his
      late 60s Interpretations on Record broadcast but it is a wonderfully unified performance and a model of good taste in the best sense. My email address--nicholasrcbrown@gmail.com

    Not my favorite, but I still wish that I could play this well. And we will argue over the recordings of Gilels, Eisenzopf, Fischer, Solomon, and others. Incidentally, I am very fond of Haskil's. Hoomeyow!!

    Herrje! Der Flügel ist hart, blechern und verstimmt, Kempff offenbar ebenso... er klingt schlecht gelaunt und selbst verärgert über sein unpräzises und krampfiges Geklimper...

      Awesome upload in awesome sound. The vulnerable quality in his playing that at its best draws you in seems to get the better of him here and there.
