Surviving in Kuwait's 'unbearable' heat - BBC News

  • The Middle East is heating up at twice the global average, and Kuwait now regularly sees temperatures above 50C.
Kuwait’s economy is dominated by fossil fuel exports but as the temperature rises more and more of Kuwait is becoming desert and it becomes harder to live with the extreme heat.
With the mercury topping 53C, three Kuwaiti citizens - an influencer, a weather forecaster and a retired civil servant - raise the alarm with concerns about “how much longer we can consider Kuwait habitable”
They urge that Kuwait must not be allowed to get any hotter - and one of them has a solution to offer.
BBC Life at 50C looks at extreme heat around the world.

As a Kuwaiti, I do not like how this turned out. BBC should've included other people like Om Naif or at least one labor worker instead of an influencer. Whether it's a municipality worker, a mechanic, or basically anyone else. They could've gone to several organizations that try to change the weather situation in Kuwait on a government level but have no voice. I admit, we are lazy and love our A/C and our cars, and tbh, I am one of them. But that doesn't mean that there isn't anyone trying to change it on a legislative level.

Am moving to Kuwait next month for a nanny job. But I already know, it's going to be hard like it was for me in Oman back in 2016, I started sleeping under my bed because of the heat, the cold tiles helped a lot, my employer was so financially strained and just generally a bad person because the family refused me from using the AC unit in my bedroom, I could have easily died from the heat.
At yet another home in Oman, I used to wakeup at 3 in the morning because by 5, it would be too hot to work outside, as a housemaid then.
It's her nanny, housemaid, driver and workers who use the bus train or walk to work that are truely affected NOT the employers

I lived in Kuwait for a bit, and the addiction to air conditioning is both understandable and insane, I think the one example that fully encapsulates the insanity of it all would be the portable outdoor Air conditioners the size of an American fridge used to cool 1-2 outdoor restaurant tables for people who would choose to eat outside. The marina restaurant areas would be full of these running seemingly even when no one is around.
The heat is truly unbearable but the methods to escape it seem to spawn from a laissez faire attitude from the excess of fossil fuel energy that provides an insanely low energy prices. I can't help but feel this is born from their own excess and hubris that their oil reserves can sustain this lifestyle. It most certainly can't for the poor working migrants who do not have the luxury to have an air conditioned Apartment or Car.

Both women are important, both points of view are needed. One woman plants trees and urges us to adapt. The young woman warns us that excessive heat is negatively impacting families, and gives us specific examples. Both try to help, in their different ways, based on their life's circumstances. Complaining is good, and is needed, when there is something to complain about, like climate warming. One woman is retired, can make time to plant trees and is willing to sacrifice part of her income to water them. The young woman runs a business from home and raises her young family. From both their perspectives, they offer valuable insight. Complaining about an existing problem is an attempt to sound an alarm. Complaining is necessary, important, high value. We must pay attention when others complain. Don't blame the messenger.

Yes, it's hot because Kuwaitis are enjoying a modern, civilised, concrete jungle in the middle of the scorching desert heat. I mean, kudos to the older woman and the meteorologist for recognising this, acknowledging the problem, and proposing feasible solutions followed by real action and "boots on the ground." Other than that, what I got from the "influencer" was whining about how hot it is, how much she and her family suffer, and how to live your life around this heat crisis by structuring daily necessities, etc. Pathetic and sad, I recommend an additional crisis be recorded for Kuwait to tackle... a detached generation of spoiled brats who want cooler temperatures without having to give up any of their modern-day luxuries or change any of their carbon inducing habits.

Must be hard for influencer driving around in her air-conditioned car lmao.
I've been living here in Kuwait for 23 years, and let me tell you; interviewing that influencer gets you nowhere close to the actual experience of living in Kuwait.
It's very different when you're an expat earning minimum wage. Kuwait's laws do no allow expats to buy vehicles unless their salaries are above 600kwd (average is 200 - 300) and posses a college/higher education degree. So no amount of money saved will get you a car, you need a very high monthly salary and degree.
If they are so aware of the harsh living conditions, maybe adjust that law so that "lower-class" people can afford a vehicle by saving up. Or the least that could be done is to fix some sort of proper public transport as the buses we have here currently are extremely unreliable.
I remember around 2019, ground temps hit close to a scorching 60°, there were labor workers dying from heat strokes and nothing was done to adjust their working hours.
You guys missed an opportunity to understand the real struggle here by covering some spoiled influencer's perspective.

There was an Italian farmer in Fresno California in the early 1900's who was faced with a similar heat issue. He started digging underground courtyards with tunnels connecting the spaces. Once he dug down about 30ft he was able to grow trees in the soil. I realize underground tunnels wouldnt be practical for a dense urban city. But, it looks like there is lots of dessert outside the cities that could grow lots of trees and homes underground if they just excavated down far enough. You can build entire homes underground with vent tubes in the ceiling that act as venturi tubes to constantly cycle cool air passively.

It was in California and when they started, the land was dry as a bone, but after they got their farm up and running, it was lush and green. Then, some wildfires came through and their farm was the only thing in the area that didn't burn. Definitely a lesson more people should know about.

I work outside currently. The last half of june and beginning of July was a straight record setting heatwave with 100% humidity every day. I legitimately thought I was going to die at certain points, got heat exhaustion three times, everyday i'd come home and sit in the shower for a while even though I barely had the energy and would just barely make it to my bed afterwards to curl up with a huge bottle of water. The heat/sun was so bad it actually burned through the SPF 70 I was wearing and I made sure to apply it about once every 30 minutes or so because I was sweating so damn much. Luckily the heat has calmed down a little bit but it's still rough working in that weather. It's easy to understand how people die from it, you're alright one minute and the next your heart is pounding, your vision is blurry, and the world is spinning as you desperately try to stumble into some shade before you black out in the sun.
Also that elder woman is amazing but the young influencer was kinda irritating, her perspective is entirely selfish, don't know why you picked her other than she probably put it out to her massive audience in the country, even so you only have lessthan 700K views even though her audience is more than double that. Of course, mass adoption is required for this to have a widespread effect on the city, so the question is where the (very wealthy) Kuwaiti government and private businesses are in all of this. Everyone would benefit from implementing the solution proposed in this video - private citizens as well as the government, who are at least partially in charge of supplying energy to everyone, and private businesses who have to cool massive buildings across the city. (And the oil companies would still make their money). I loved this video, and wish it would have spoken more about whether or not any progress is being made with planting trees (or any other solutions).
