They quit making toys for kids, its all bullshit for adult babies. Anything that might pass for a toy is snapped up by collectors for them to sit on and dream of retirement so the kids now dont have any toy based childhood tentpoles. Theres no gi Joe flight carrier or he man castle or barbie Malibu dream house to wish for. No point because they wouldn't get one even if it existed so they don't have the attachment we did as kids to certain toys and lines. Turns out its kinda hard to be a toy company that doesn't sell toys for kids but junk for hoarders and wishful thinkers. They only toys are for toddlers or the cheapest marketing crap like Ryan's mystery turd .

I don't have a kid but I have young nieces and nephews and generally speaking I really feel that if they have access to tablets, THAT is there go to toy. Otherwise the main things they want are mostly tiny "lottery" unboxing things that they open with excitement and then forget about within the hour for eternity.
Maybe below the age of 7 you get more excitement for toys like baby dolls and trucks. But generally I think children get their fun through other means now.

Honestly could be a Toy Story plot all its own: Woody and the gang wind up missing on a trip yet again, only this time they find themselves at a remote thrift store with endless isles of toys that were rejected and never bought.
What makes it wild could be the inclusion of the shopkeeper, who is a kid at heart but has been around the toys for so long he knows that they actually talk, and he put up with it for so long that the toys and the shopkeep converse like nothing is weird.
As for plot, lets say the shopkeep really doesnt want to throw away all the excess toys that build up over time, and usually when its time to purge the store, he gathers huge amounts of them to be donated to developing countries where children may never get toys where they live.
What could happen is the shopkeepers boss comes and finds out he has lagged behind on selling the sadly unpopular toys and orders the entirety of the toys inside the store to be sent to the junkyard, and immediately has a bunch of workers scooping toys into trash trucks.
Now with the shopkeep, the toys are generally acting like themselves. The rejects dont act like their characters for the most part, like real people, and are comfortable with the shopkeeper because he can keep a secret. But with other humans, they obviously act like objects.
Near the climax of the film, the boss and shopkeep get in an argument over the whole fiasco, and Woody gets an idea to save the rejects: they all animate and act like entire armies, almost possessed by poltergeists to scare the boss out.
Since the shop becomes condemned, you would think oh all the toys have nowhere to go and now tons of them will be scrapped. Not a problem, as the shopkeeper discovers an abandoned mall in the middle of the woods, large enough to hold millions of toys comfortably and happily. In return for saving his friends, the shopkeeper returns Woody and friends to Bonnie just in time again before they leave, except this time one of the shopkeeper's favorites decide to join them, as his adventure with the shopkeep has ended, and wishes to see greater pastures.

Kids simply don't care about action figure type toys anymore. they're more into building/interactive type toys which is odd considering the stereotype that kids do nothing but sit on their ipads all day. They love diy slime kits and those engineering cardboard building kits, pretty much anything that involves them creating something is what they're into. They also really love those tiny mystery unboxing type toys for some reason.

From the view of someone who collects figures imported from Japan and sees prices significantly above this as reasonable for what I buy, these feel like they're pricing for the adult collector while making them kids toy quality, which makes them too expensive for parents to justify for their kids and too cheaply made for adult collectors. It's a middle ground you don't want to be in. Figma, a Japanese action figure line targeted towards adults, usually has figures priced at at least $60, some going into over $100, but they're high quality with partial hand painting to prevent machine painting errors and have a good amount of extra parts. However, the parts are quite small and wouldn't fare well with a child.

The problem isn't just that kids are more interested in digital things. It's advertising. I remember when I was a kid, watching kids TV shows, those ads were CRAZY. They made me feel like I needed to have those toys. No one is wasting their time on cable TV these days. Kids are either on CZcams, TikTok, streaming services, or kids games. And you know what CZcams shows kids? Shitty mobile game ads. The cycle perpetuates itself. It's sneaky like that. Mobile games are way more profitable than toys because kids don't need to steal their parents money to give mobile games money (although they do that a lot too). Just watching those awful ads is enough, and kids eat it up. To the kid, it doesn't feel like they're paying for anything. It's all "free" entertainment. In fact, the parents see it that way too. They don't need to take the time to go to a store and open their wallet to buy their kid a toy. Kids passively entertain themselves for "free" by just screwing around on their iPads.

I'm not surprised toys sales have tanked...quality is extremely low and the prices have gotten excessive.
I'm a collector of diecast cars and I used to collect Hot Wheels but mostly Matchbox.
Hot Wheels used to have all metal cars and some had opening doors, bonnets and boots...now all is plastic and nothing opens.
Matchbox slowly went downhill then really dropped when bought out by Mattel...they used to nearly always have moving parts (doors, bonnets) and 99% had suspension and metal bases...now all are cheaply made to even worse than Hot Wheels (originally classed as rubbish in the old days) with no suspension and no openinb parts an 0% metal bases.
I now have to buy direct from Japan to buy brands like Tomica Limited Vintage (very expensive) and other quality brands every now and then because everything in our local malls (this is in Australia) is cheap plastic junk more suited to dollar stores where a pack of 20 nondescript cars cost $2.
Most of these problems occurred because US mega-companies have bought up all the other international brands and made them cheaper to manufacture but kept the same price or raised it even with the low quality.
Also there is less choice these days as 3 or 4 brands own everything.

As someone who has gifted generations of children in my family during Christmas, toys in our family only work up until the age 6, rarer, 10. After that, they'd ask for books, Korean or Japanese stuff, bags, usable items of clothing, gadgets, and even trips as gifts. If "toys" are ever asked for past the 11th age, it would be collectibles of an anime they want, like figmas, or BJDs which are more customized.
This year, for example, I gifted my little niece a couple BJD dolls. NOT a Barbie, she asked for the dolls with the movable joints and a hand-made hooded jackets. I gave the other older niece a Lisa photobook. While my own girl got a new phone, an art set that costed a bit, and dual-tipped markers with a horde of sketchpads that she uses for her art.
Children's tastes have changed. Long gone are days that mainstream media toys were popular or wanted. They still have a place, don't get me wrong, but it seems to not be the case in my family. At times, it was more appreciated if the gift could be used on the daily, if it can't be collected.

It's both nice and sad to see the downfall of Hasbro. I've been covering their financial reports for the last couple years and its a constant downhill fall other than Wizards. I was filled with joy seeing Wizards take a loss in the 4th Quarter because as a D&D fan I'm sick of how they are treating the franchise. Yet, I do lament that the company that brought my GI Joe and Transformers is falling apart. I doubt sales will turn around this year and as long as Hasbro works with Disney they are just throwing money into a trash can. I'm curious if the company will last long enough to trun things around.

I swear action figures as a whole have just died off for kids even when I was younger I really saw anyone around my age have them as everyone I knew just wanted to buy toys that you could build such as Lego, mega blocks, buildable racetracks or train sets. Also there was things like Beyblade (which hasbro has also ruined) that were just way cooler than having a random plastic figure of iron man and cap. Over the summer I worked a kids summer camp program for my college and what I noticed is that of the toys we would have for kids waiting to be picked up by their parents was that they would always want to play with the lego bricks or have one of us play a board game or cards with them rather than mess around with the lot of action figures we had. Of course there was some that did but it was rare to see over the other things we offered them

Well Jeff, RetroBlasting put it this at last in regards to Hasbro they decided to cater to the adult market which is why HasLab exists and abandoning the core market that being kids. Kids pester their parents to buy them toys but because all the figures they make are more orientated towards adults with adult incomes well, it's harder to justify buying little Timmy that Marvel or Star Wars figure when it's cheaper in the long run to buy an iPad.
That's the reality of it. The moment Hasbro decided to go all in on adult collectors that's when things went to shit and Disney didn't help matters because of characters they want to push.
