My husband met me when my son was 3. He adopted him. We went on happily married, having many more children. When our youngest three sons were ages 6.6 (twins) & 7, my husband died, at only 45 yrs old. Our eldest son was in his 20s, and he has stepped up in his brothers' lives as a father-type figure. I once was thanking him for how much he has helped and all he has done for his brothers. He responded, "I'm just paying Dad back, doing for his sons what he did for me." I cried for 3 days. Yes, this song hits me hard.

Ok I didn’t cry til that. God bless and provide continued support and comfort to you and your family. At 45 I dealt with prostate cancer. Post surgery I coded from an internal bleed. Almost left but I still have more work to do. A strong woman like you came along and rescued me from myself. 53 now and I got to fulfill my dream of finally getting married to a Lady with three children almost grown. I’ve done the best I’ve known how but my dad had paranoid schizophrenia so while he tried his best. His best was in a reality different than ours. Life is beautiful but hard! Keep going

Pre-70's. Dads were not permitted in the delivery room. Moms also were not awake during birth. Dr. Did not want the nonprofessional dad that might faint. Or if some emergency came up, did not want emotional mom & dad. It was seen more like an appendectomy than a natural occurrence. In the late 60's it started to change

I first heard this song as a teenager while taking a shower. Immediate waterworks. After my shower I ran and cried in my daddy’s arms. Not too many years before that while in middle school I learned that he was not my biological dad. He met my mom when I was less than 1 and he adopted and raised me. I remind myself to interpret this as “parent” instead of dad since I’m a mom lol but the message still rings true. My parents are now divorced but it never changed our relationship or that I am the biggest daddy’s girl on this planet. He is the best daddy and the best grandpa ❤

I dedicated this song to my dad at my wedding back in 2018. My father basically didn't give a shit about me and wasn't around and this man stepped up with me at the age of 1yrs old and filled those shoes. He is now a retired 45yr OTR owner operator truck who has also hauled for our military and federal agencies. He was gone for weeks at a time but when he was home, I always ran out to the truck when he arrived and helped him get his bags out the truck and gave him huge hugs. He cared for me in the hardest way possible but loves me very much. Now it's been my turn to take care of not only him, but my mother. He sacrificed a lot while I was growing up. Now I must sacrifice for him. He has battled cancer and my motheris going through her own battle of cancer and I am there 24/7 to do whatever is needed. They are almost done with all their treatments. I'm just glad I was able to bring in a grandkid before it was too late. My daughter is 8yrs old and they absolutely love her to death.

What I love the most is how country songs paint vivid pictures and that each one is its own story. Some happy, some sad, some silly, some serious, but all are relatable and even when you're not trying to you still catch yourself singing along. Its realness is what brings us together and it doesn't matter who you are or what you are. Hell, I used to hate country music when I was growing up. But once I grew up, had some life experiences, didn't have a father in my life to speak with for advice, I found comfort and meaning in the last place I'd have ever thought, country music. From the age of 21 years old I began giving country music a chance and here I am at 51 now. I don't know what I'd have done if I hadn't had county music in my life for the past 30 years. The music of Collin Raye, Clint Black, Vince Gill, The Mavericks, Bryan White, Diamond Rio, Randy Travis, Doug Stone, and so many more were there with me for every high and low and will be still with me until my dying breath. Sure, I still listen to Skid Row, Luis Miguel, James Ingram, Aerosmith, Lara Fabian, and so many others but as I continue to age I find that country music, especially from 90s country artists is what I most long to hear.

I'm writing this through tears in my eyes. I've heard this song many times, but seeing you react to it gave it new meaning to me.
My parents were married in 1968. My brother was born in 1970, I was born in 1972, and my sister was born in 1976. My parents are still married. My Dad is my hero. My Mom was a stay at home, Mom. My Dad was the breadwinner. He worked long hours 5 days a week and sometimes weekends, but he was always there for every birthday, holiday, school event, anything important to his kids he was there. Long story short, recently, my Dad told he that I'm a good man and he knows that because he's seen it. Hearing him say that, knowing that he was proud of me, still means everything to me. So I hope that I'm at least half the Dad he is.

The situation in the hospital with the mother being taken off and the dad not being there for the birth could still happen for an emergency C-section. For a planned C-section, dad is usually there, but an emergency one requires general anesthesia. It does look more like the typical process of labor and delivery in the 70s and 80s, though.

    • @user-jy4vz7fo7b
      @user-jy4vz7fo7b Před 26 dny +2

It does not have to be an emergency C-Section. Any serious complications can cause a Doctor to close the delivery room. A limb presentation, nuchal cord, complicated breach, placenta previa or abruptio placenta can all be very reasonable reason to keep the family out of the room.

I was just out of a bad divorce and he with my mom dying. Those few years I spent with him were the best years of my life. My dad was my best friend. He and I went fishing nearly every weekend. He told me things I'd never known about him. I miss him still, the memories have made it so much easier. Typically I loose it when I hear Conway Twitty's song (That's my job). I always love this song, every time I hear it. Our mom met our step-dad, who we call, "Pops," when we were 7, 5, and 2. I dedicated this song to Pops several years ago, giving it to him in a frame. Our dad was in our lives, too, we just got a bonus in Pops. Pops is almost 84 years old, with Alzheimer's and non-alcoholic cirrhosis. We know we don't have a ton of time left with him. I love him so much, and Pops has always been there for us. This song will always touch me because of Pops, who has always been "the dad he didn't have to be."

We had a special bond as a child he was so thoughtful and fun as an adult we worked together I gained so much respect for him and as his final carer I felt priviledged and proud to have known and loved and been loved by a truly beautiful gentle man. He gave me his time his love of books and music and joy for the simple things in life. As adults, we enjoyed friendship and fun love and respect. I miss him so much. When my daddy met my momma, she was a widow with 5 little boys. I arrived 8 years later. And when my momma passed in her 90's, one of my brothers told a family member from my dad's side that my daddy showed all them boys how to be good, decent hard working men that took care of their families. Your emotions are touching. Do not be afraid to show that tender side. Love your reactions. And - for something fun - "I'm Gonna Miss Her"

My dad wasn't in the room when any of us 6 kids were born, 1961 thru 70. Back in those days the father stayed in a waiting room and paced around until the doctor announced it was all over.
No sonograms either in those days. Baby's sex wasn't known until the birth.
This is an amazing song! And Brad sang it perfectly.

This is/was my sons dad. I was a teen mom and once I hit adulthood my bestfriend/neighbors brother started watching my son while I worked my first job. His first words was Dad. It brought us together and We became a family when my son was 3. He was a Dad in every way that mattered even ten years later when we parted ways. Stayed a full time dad through 4years of separation and two years ago after we found our way back to each other ( with my now addit 2sons and his addit 1daughter) becoming a family of 6 we lost him in a tragic Motorcycle accident. He was/is the dad he never needed to be. He will ALWAYS be Dad on earth or not

Thanks for sharing this one, BP. I never heard it before.
The man who raised me was in a situation like your dad. His father died when he was 5 years old, and his brother, only a couple years older than him, became "man" of the house. He did the best he could to play that role.
What was most important to me was knowing that someone out there actually wanted me and my siblings. Prior to him stepping in, we were passed around (dumped off) between our parents and other family members quite a bit. I don't blame any of them because they were also doing the best they could given circumstances at the time. That's really all any of us can ever do. But we can also look at those things that we appreciate and despise most to try to make things a little better for others, especially our own children.❤

With our first son, born in the late seventies, my husband was not allowed in the delivery room. Our second son, born in the late eighties, he was there front and center and cut the cord too. He always hated the fact that he was denied that privilege with our oldest son. Times keep changing, but to me, the love of a parent is the greatest thing in this world. I'm so thankful I broke the pattern I was raised in. Children are our greatest blessings, even when they are teenagers and make you want to pull your hair out. Then you pray over them every day, the next thing you know, they are grown and have their own families.
This song always gets to me, but for a very different reason. I had the opposite kind of stepfather. He was not a good person at all. My biological dad left when I was three and my sister was an infant, sadly he wasn't interested in being a dad to his two biological daughters, and being in the military he was always "somewhere else". Our mother, well that's a whole other piece of work. She wasn't much better. Our stepfather was much more important to her than we were. I'll never understand how her mind worked. Thankfully, our maternal grandparents showed us what loving us meant.
I made it my vow to hug my two boys and tell them how much I love them every single day and I still do. They are both adults with two children each and are the best parents I could ever ask for. I'm thankful I was able to not be so bitter as to not appreciate and love those two gifts God gave us just because I had terrible parents and really bad stepfather.
Brad Paisley has some very incredible songs as I'm sure you are finding out. Enjoy this journey, especially enjoy your journey of being a great father! Take care.

*When I Get Where I'm Going ~ Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton* . It's beautiful, it was my sister's request at our Mama's funeral. My grandpa never called my dad his son in law, he was his son. ...he treats my husband and brothers in law, the same.
A lot of times during c-sections, nobody could/can go in. I was under GA with our first, I saw him for a few minutes after I woke up and then they took MD to NICU. I was alone with our second because of the urgency and husband had our 3 year old and went to the wrong hospital. He got into the OR before surgery was done, but IK had already been taken to NICU.

Brad Paisley pitched the idea for this song to his co-writer, Kelley Lovelace. The song is Lovelace's own lived experience. They were in a writing session one day and Lovelace's step-father was present. Paisley's pitch was, something to the effect of, "I think we need to write a song abut you two. Something that'll make your wife cry."

Mr. Peguses. There was a time, not so long ago, that fathers were not allowed in the delivery room at the hospital. In fact, no one but the medical staff was allowed in. So dad, surrounded by family and friend supporters waited in the waiting room until the baby was born. Then the nurse would come out to report to the dad that all was ok and to announce the gender. Once the baby was cleaned up, inspected and safely in the nursery, dad and maybe grandparents would be brought back to see the baby through the glass. Keeping the baby from being exposed to viruses, bacteria and any germs that may make the baby sick.

I was wondering if someone was going to mention this for BP. My Dad was never in the delivery rm for any of his children's births. Not sure how well he would have done, even if he was allowed. In addition to him not being in there, it was common practice for mothers to be anesthetized by Demerol, etc, many years ago. My Mom was knocked out for at least her 1st 2 deliveries, so my Dad likely saw me & my brother before she did.

BP the reason he wasn't allowed in the delivery room in the beginning of the video is bc back in the day, they made expectant fathers wait in the waiting room (or at least outside the door). This song came out 1999, so it was commonplace for dads to wait outside the room during the delivery. Ty, another great react:-)

No, in the 80s and 90s, fathers were always encouraged to be in the delivery room. Even sometimes in the 70s, if the mother and father wanted, he was allowed in the delivery room. If there was a very serious complication that required unplanned surgery, the father was not allowed in.
