There won't be a Mr.Gupta around to write a First Person Second Draft piece when the indigenous people of Assam become a minority in their own homeland. But hopefully ThePrint will be around and some smart guy will go the extra mile to report and write series of articles on the systemic "silent genocide" of indigenous people of Assam.

@@grimmywizardWhat Indian you were? Before Independence it was British India and before that it was Bengal ruled for centuries by Muslims invaders since Bhaktiyar Khilji. Assam was an independent kingdom and was under Myanmar before the British got Assam from Myanmar through Yandoboo Treaty in 1826. The British then included Assam with their already captured Bengal for ease of administration. You could not save yourself from Muslim invasion and how dare you compare to us? Our ancestors were able to fight the Muslim invasion and never let them rule us. Therefore we need not to run like refugees to other countries out of fear from Muslims. Indira Gandhi wanted to be known as the lady who ruled with the iron fist. Never to bog down in front of anybody ( not the assamese, sikhs or the mizos). Even after so many blunders she never reformed herself.
Great analysis, as someone born in assam in the 90s, i grew up hearing about the "assam agitation" in bits and pieces mostly from my father who was in the assam police. Remember him uttering the slogans of the agitators, it had a line about burying Jyoti Basu.
I version i grew up hearing was about the mass protest by AASU across assam which culminated into the Assam Accord - a comparatively calm affair. It was not until the internet became widespread that i came to know about the Nellie massacre and assorted inter ethnic violenec.
Thank you for this detailed coverage.
I hope next you cover the Mautam in Mizoram ,the subsequent raise of insurgency and the Aizawl air raid by Indian Air force that Mrs Gandhi ordered. First time in the history that any Air force had bombed within national boundary of the same country.

Myself and Dilip Sarma a gentleman from Guwahati were the first persons to inform the Jagiroad police station at about 3-30 am in the cold winter night about something serious happening afar. The horizon to the north of the highway was alight as if on fire. The police didn't took us seriously and took everything in a calm manner. I will never forget that night never in my life. I request you to do a 3rd documentary and present the other side of the argument as well since untill now you gave a very one sided description of the event only. You are mainly presenting the story with empathy for the illegal immigrants. What about rights of the original indigenous citizens? No one talks about why it happened. The illegal immigration and resulting rapid demographic change (threatening to replace the local language & culture) was and still is the main problem which no one seems to be addressing seriously.

What Hindus are capable in INDIA when they go in rampant mode is evident from several incidents but still there is no procedure to tackle the resentment among the HINDUS.Gone are the days when Information wasn't handy but it is now spreading like wild fire resulting in mass radicalisation of HINDUS,address the issues of HINDUS otherwise we are just piling DYNAMITE under our table and it will just need one spark to create ball of fire and wreck havoc in INDIA

Such violence should never happen again. But congress is to be blamed for it. Tribal people have an animal nature of being territorial unless reformed through education. Sirf assam mei hi nahi, north east ke baki kisi bhi tribal state pe illegal immigrant jor jabardasti rakh do, be it bangladeshi or pakistani or sri lankan; same reaction will be seen from local tribals. Its not racism, its being territorial. For example Meghalaya mei toh koi bhi non meghalaya wala aadmi land nahi purchase kar saketa, itna territorial hai woh log. Assam was very educationally backward at that time. Intelligent Congress despite knowing this nature of tribals, leaving foreign bangladeshi immigrants in refugee camps, there was like leaving group of untrained dogs and cats who were not used to live with each other to live in the same cage priorly inhabitated by one of the species ;and it was first kind of an event for both these 2 groups of people; and therefore Violence was bound to happen. Depicting those day's both illegal hindu and muslim immigrants as present day's legal bengali indian citizen, 40 years later today by this video will now instigate hate and communism towads assamese people; instead of focusing on ground level solutions like education and reforms which is a slow hard process but a sure way of bringing harmony among present day inhabitants of Assam. Instigating people to fight against each other is nature of politics today in india, instead of focusing on real life problems and solutions. Its sad that such tragic loss of life happened but the decision choice of reffuge camp location of immigrats at wrong time, of those time country's leaders is to be blamed; which wouldn't have happened if the refugee camps were set up at better suitable places. And reason for not releasing this information of this event 40 years ago is because everyone would have criticised this stupid decision of then in power congress for setting up an unprotected refugee camp in a territorial tribal belt. Seeing today's Pappu's intelligence it is easy to imagine his forefather's intelligence from this tragic event.
For example take for example Sentinelise island on Andaman and Nicobar islands; everybody will laugh at any government who will set up a refugee camp there. Pakka government officials bhi wapas nahi ayega waha se.
