Honey bees use water for a variety of purposes, including:
Drinking: Bees need water to survive, just like humans do. They drink water to stay hydrated and to help them digest their food.
Regulating the hive temperature: Bees use water to help regulate the temperature of their hive. In the summer, they spread water on the hive walls and fan it with their wings to help cool the hive down. In the winter, they use water to help keep the hive warm.
Feeding young bees: Nurse bees feed young bees a mixture of water, pollen, and nectar. The water helps to keep the food moist and easier for the bees to digest.
Diluting honey: Sometimes, honey can become too thick or crystallize. Bees use water to dilute the honey and make it easier to eat.
Other uses: Bees may also use water for other purposes, such as cleaning the hive or making wax.
Bees are very efficient at using water. They only collect the amount of water they need and they recycle water whenever possible. For example, they will reuse water that has been used to cool the hive or dilute honey.
A call to action,
If you have bees in your yard, you can help them by providing them with a source of clean water. A birdbath or shallow dish of water will do the trick. Just make sure that the water is changed regularly so that it stays clean and fresh.
I setup a watering station for a local beehive last year. There were hundreds of bees. It was a lot of fun watching them through the summer - to come and get water. Unfortunately this was from a wild hive of a neighbor - 2 houses away. And he paid a service to come and remove the hive. I'll never know what happened to all those little bees. They were my little friends last summer, so calm and they never tried to attack or sting me.
Don't be sad!! There's a very good chance that the wild swarm you bonded with was collected by a beekeeping service and transplanted to a usable beebox, it's a very common practice. Your bee friends are probably out there making honey, hell someone probably sells it near you!

I came to Love Bees so very much through watering them and interacting very closely with them They would follow me around the neighborhood on my bike , they always recognized me . I was so blissfully happy with them . I divorced and we sold our house , It was harder to leave those Bees then the Man . I just got 4 acres of woods and a house we’re I can have as many Bees as I want . Providing Bees with water and flowers etc is very very satisfying , They never ever stung me either

@@kendratheflynn3368 It's only African bee's that is wild. 99% of all "wild bee's" you see is when a beekeepers hive gets to full or the queen above 3-4 year old. Then she lays some egg's that the nursing bee's feed those larvae a special diet called Royal Jelly to make a new Queen. Then the old queen takes half of the colony and move to a new location. Called Swarming. Normally it's a beekeeper that comes to collect those swarms because they are so valuable for the nature and all living animals and humans. I'm a beekeeper myself but I live in the Netherlands, Europe and we get called often to gather swarms. They make you happy and you have no reason to be afraid of them because they only sting if they are getting threaten by a human. They die if they sting so that's why they avoid it until it's completely necessary. But male bee (drone) don't have a stinger. It's easy to see the difference between a working bee and a Drone. Drones are 50% bigger and the back part of it is dark and no stripes.

12:18 lol i rewatched this crash landing over and over hahah it's so adorable and humbling how bees have their own personalities and idiosyncrasies (for example, i've also read research on varying levels of dopamine and other neurotransmitters during risk-taking behaviors in both bees and humans)
I picture a bee coming into the hive loaded with bright yellow pollen. Another bee asks her "Who are you wearing and where can I get it?" Waggle dance ensues. Bees are so freaking adorable! I wish I wasn't allergic. Thank you for living my dream of beekeeping vicariously through your videos.
Frederick, when I watch bees on your up- close videos, I can see so much detail that I feel like I'm observing a large mammal at the zoo.

What? That sounds interesting
I've heard bees dances to indicate location of some places based on the sunlight polarisation. It's like a collective process: a bee start to dance (expressing how "excited" she's from his recent discovery), and others would follow this dance if they consent exploring this area. As several bees may try to convinces others to explore the place they found, they can collectively see a consensus emerge, based on how many bees are reproducing a particular dance.
Dont take this for a fact, I heard that on day from Jean-Claude Amesein but I'm not sure I've exactly memorize it !

I was wondering about this! My girls, ignoring my water station near the hive, found my sprouting tray on my deck and -love- the little sprouting rooting sponges. I marked a few and saw that the same ones go back and forth all day, so I assume they were ferrying water to the hive to do whatever it is they need with it.

Where I work we had a water jug outside that held ice. It was yellow with a red top. It also had a slow leak in the spout. Honeybees first came to visit most likely thinking it was a flower. Then they discovered the water leaking out. It was fun just to sit and watch them come repeatedly throughout the day to drink their fill and leave.
More people should leave out water sources like that :)

I really enjoy the photography! Great shots of the bees and a very informative narration, too! We've wondered about the numbers of bees we see obviously "drinking" from the water in our birdbath, which I renew each morning---it is NOT unusual to see a dozen or more bees all at one time drinking water from that birdbath in the late afternoon and early evening and we imagine that they all must be heading pretty directly back to the hive, as they all head of in pretty much in exactly the same direction when done at the birdbath.
Your slo-mo photography is, as usual, awesome. I've been seeing this behavior on my hives and sort of assumed they were bringing in water. This confirmed my thoughts. Thank you for showing this.

I had a bunch of my bees decide to start drinking from a hole in my plastic pool ladder today. Kids were concerned. I just waited til dark and plugged the holes. Funny how they pick that place to drink and not the water I provide them. haha
They also like to gather on leaky hose connections.
Your photography and videography is wonderful to watch. It was a little hotter than normal yesterday here in Olympia and I wandered out to watch the landing board and was excited to see several workers ‘ventilating’ the hive, taking the exact pose and positioning that you displayed in your video!
Have you ever closely inspected or photographed the detritus that forms on a catch tray below a screen bottom board? I collected the waste droppings from beneath one of my hives, inspected with a strong magnifying glass, and saw a LOT of wildlife living there. Some looked like tiny spiders. Some looked like tiny ticks (possible mites). There was one small reddish beetle and one tiny white caterpillar or worm. I tried to capture pictures without success. All of these make a new beekeeper concerned.
Would you ever consider producing a video of an expedition like this?
