My parents are from North Sydney mines. I had the pleasure a few years ago to visit their hometown and we took a trip over to Newfoundland. Best trip of my life, best food I’ve ever had and the people are the nicest people I’ve ever met.❤️❤️❤️👌👍
I love Newfoundland, and it's the people who make it the best ❤..... I enjoyed your video
Thank you so much. It's really appreciated.
My Newfie great granny had a woodstove in her kitchen, except hers was white & she would had approved of your woodstove.
How I miss her baking & cooking. Food tasted so good with the wood.
I watched your video this morning. Made the casserole this afternoon for our dinner. So easy to make and is hearty and delicious. Winter here on Hindmarsh Island, South Australia this was the perfect dinner. Thankyou for sharing. 🌟
Absolutely LOVE THAT STOVE ITS BEAUTIFUL USE TO COOK ON A QUEEN ATLANTIC AND HEATED THE KITCHEN AND 1ST FLOOR OF THE HOUSE
Tasty meal for sure, even gets better after a day in the woods or on the water, great video share, love the carvings
Thank you so much!
First time viewer, what a cool wood stove!
Thank you for watching, I have some new videos with the stove coming out in the next week
We used most of those ingredients wrapped in heavy duty aluminium foil. Then burie in the hot coals of a camp fire and let it roast up. Truly yummy. This from NH US.
Had this a lot in northern Ontario. We didn’t use parsnip or turnip, we didn’t precook the ground beef, and we mixe the tomato soup with boiling water before pouring it in. Sooo good!
Turnip is a vegetable that's very common in Newfoundland. We eat almost as much as potatoes. I forgot to add water, mom always did, and mom usually cooks everything together as well.
It's great seeing how people from other places make this dish. Thanks for watching. It was much appreciated
Hello, Mate, yes, my beloved grand taught me this similar awesome meal. She called it " The Farm Pot " as most of my family were farmers and or tradesmen. She would grind / cook, either beef or pork and layer the same way with what ever veggies from the cold storage under the kitchen. I carry on that tradition to this day. Just found your videos and truly love it and the traditions of our beloved family ancestors. Thanks & Cheers Mate. God Bless to you and yours, from Eastern Ontario a fellow Canuck 👍😊🍁 PS: nothing cooks and tastes better than cast iron cooking.👍❤️
You're absolutely right Paul, cast iron is the best for cooking. It's amazing the different names for the same recipe. We also call it, 7 layer dinner. I believe it's so important to keep our traditions alive, especially old recipes. This generation doesn't cook like our grandparents did many years ago, and in a few generations from now, most of our traditional recipes will be a thing of the past. It's sad to lose a part of our identity.
I am in Vancouver and Shipwreck is one of my favourite winter dishes. The only difference is no peas and I mix the tomato soup with the water then pour over. So good!!
Wow! It's amazing to see the same dish being eating from both coastlines of Canada, the Atlantic, and the Pacific.
Hello from Vancouver Island,I’m a Blue Noser.👍🏝️
@troyqueen9503 from one end of the country to the other end. Thank you for watching. BC is definitely a province I want to visit one day.
I would sprinkle my favorite cheese over that right out of the oven! That's got to be good on a frosty day!
Amazing! Looks great.
Thank you do much!
Love your cast iron pot. I love to cook in cast iron. I will try this recipe. Love the ingredients. Thank you for the video. Have a blessed day
Thank you for watching. I truly appreciate the kind words, you you have a blessed day as well 🙏
I love your wood stove
Thanks
it is a work of art
@@smiley9872 Thank You So Much!
Will definitely be giving this a try in Cape Town...plenty real shipwrecks along our coast!!
You won't be disappointed!
You can drain the grease with a turkey baster or a wad of paper towel. I collect the grease into an emty can and toss that when cold ( & solid). I would use the pea water ( it has flavour) instead of just tap water.
That's a great idea.. Thanks 👍
@@NewfieLifestyleyou could spill the exxess grease into the firebox too. Cheers.
Drained off the best Beef flavor ..... the drippings
That looks really great! I'm from the south and never heard of this but what a great idea even for a slow cooker! Thank you!
Thanks for watching Jackie. It would be perfect in the slow cooker.
Good old home cooking. Norwegian much here in Oregon.
Glad to have you part of our community
Mate can you post your woodfired oven down to Australia please? It's a beauty. What a great way to cook. Good clip mate. Really enjoyed it. Great meal for the colder climates.
Thanks, much appreciated!
Yes, this stove is amazing. It's designed like the old fashion stoves from my grandparents' days, the heat is incredible. Everything tastes different being cooked over the stove, and it's because the heat is constant and never drops. Even eggs taste better.
@@NewfieLifestyle I am down in Queensland, Australia. A mate of mine in Toronto put me onto your channel. I remember my grandmother cooking on a wood stove. On school holidays i used to chop all her firewood for her. Great memories.
Today's generation will never experience the great times we had growing up and the foods that we ate at our grandparents. In many ways, it's sad that those experiences can't be passed on to the next generation
@@NewfieLifestyle Absolutely mate.
Looks easy to put together , in Dutch oven or slow cooker. But it looks like it needs more liquid, and maybe some marmite or worchestershire sauce , and maybe , some corn , black eyed peas or pinto beans
Yup, it does need more liquid, I forgot the water. It's delicious, a very hardy meal. Great for the long winter days where you just want a great meal full of vegetables.
I make 1 pound ground beef, drain the fat, 1 can each peas, carrots, and diced white potato 1/4 sweet onion at least once a week for dinner Virginia here. Love that Browning cast iron
That sounds delicious! Thanks for the recipe. It's awesome to see how people from different parts of North America have a similar recipe.
Looks delicious! Going to try this out for sure
Some people uses pork chops which I think would be even more delicious
Epic stove! Great recipe, can’t wait to try this! Thank you.
Thanks, it as the old fashion look to it and it's the best for cooking
Looks very tasty!
Thanks Michael 👍
never knew it was a NL recipe...i love it and make it sometimes i use pork chops instead of ground beef...i dont put turnip in mine but might give it a try....i eat it with a spoon!!!
I never thought to use pork chops, that's should be delicious.
Yeah! My fam uses pork chops too. Lol. 😁👍
I definitely got to try it
Yeah price of lean ground is brutal. Great job on the seven layer dinner pretty much the same way I make mine. Got me drooling here. 🤤. Hope you have a great day.
Thanks! I love it after a hard day working outside. It really hits the spot.
Looks great
Thanks 👍
Yummy, my mom made this for us growing up, almost exactly the same it's so tasty. My Dad called it Hamburger stew. It's so good no matter what you call it 😊 the only difference is my mom added a can of diced or stewed tomatoes with the tomato soup. I'm from the Midwest in the US
I'm so glad to have you part of our community. It's always amazing to hear stories from people like yourself about recipes similar to ours. We also call it, 7 layer dinner. Thanks for watching Kathy.
That’s a great cook up. I would eat it with sour cream.
Looks good! But it's going to be 100 degrees for the next few days, I'll save the idea. My family is from Nfld, Corner Brook. Most stayed but my grandparents and sons moved to Weymouth MA where my mom was born. Hello from toasty Corvallis Oregon.
Wow, you have roots in Newfoundland. That's awesome. Have you made many trips to Newfoundland? It's amazing to connect with people from around the world who have so much in common, even if it's just similar food recipes, which is amazing. It's even more incredible when they have a connection to Newfoundland, I think a Newfoundlander can be found in every corner of North America, and we normally stand out 😆
@@NewfieLifestyle Sadly no. My G-ma went back all the time before I was born. Sometimes her sisters would visit Weymouth. My cousin said they would have a grand time dancing/jigging. My cousin visited and was able to stay at the family home as it was a B and B at the time.
Kind of reminds me of Sheppards pie
Carry pot to stovetop first and then open oven door. Lose a lot less heat that way.
Nice stove.
Make mine with kidney beans instead of turnips but really good with any combination. Whatever you like or have available.
It's definitely a great option, I like the idea of kidney beans.
Do you always use tomato soup? Cream of mushroom would be tasty too.
We made this out here in Saskatchewan, but instead of ground beef we would put a layer of pork cutlets in. Taste is nearly identical but less work.
Do you fry the cutlets before adding?
@@zanzibarandgrill6484 yes, same as you would the ground beef.
@zanzibarandgrill6484 Most people just add everything to the pot and cook it altogether. When one item is fully cooked, then the rest I'd usually cooked as well. This is an ideal meal for the slowcooker where you just add everything the one time and slow cook until it's ready.
@@NewfieLifestyle you could do it either way but you lose a lot of flavour by not browning the meat first and you don’t get an opportunity to reduce the fat.
just saw your channel like your wood fire oven what make is it
My mother-in-law gave me a similar recipe but instead of ground beef she used sausages. Very yummy!
Now, that would definitely add extra flavor. That sounds delicious.
All good bud! Love the stove, Not allowed a wood stove anywhere near where I live. I am about an hour outside Vancouver. No burning of any kind except gas. No firepit no fuck all in your yard. Not the way I grew up, but times change I guess,
Wow, that is different.
I know the woodstove brings back a lot of memories to people being at their grandparents for a cookup.
Good Lord! What has the world come to at all.
Can you use regular rice?
I used minute rice. I'm not sure if other types of rice will cook in the dish. If anyone knows, please comment. If not, then you can cook the rice and add it to the dish just before it is finished cooking.
being I can't seem to not say it, lean ground beef saves work and means more MEAT less fat.. that's the lean part.. more actual beef in the package.....
That's probably great with some malt vinegar.
Sounds good!
not unlike Shepherds or Cottage pie. Hello from Ireland.
It's great to have you part of our community
Minute rice or real dried rice? SMH when u said minute rice, just want to verify.
Looks good and very healthy, I’d leave the fat, fatty beef if better anyhow…. I’m surprised there’s no cod in it😂, cheers
We're doing a deep fried cod vieeo in a few weeks, and we're hoping to do a Cod fishing video in August.
What make us your wood stove
We got it through Home Hardware, I believe it's on their website. It's made in Nova Scotia, and it's usually a 6 month wait. They make the stove after you place the order.
It's the greatest stove you will ever own.
No peas and beef stock instead of water for the soup
Beef stock would be perfect! Extra flavor for sure
you just cooked the oil in your cutting board.
those ingredients were not in the original
No thank you. I need more juice.
You lost me @ Turnups (or parsnips) don't care for either
Hopefully you folks stop voting liberal for F sakes.
Ugh, minute rice.
