    You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
    Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
    Any place is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
    Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove
    You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us outta here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living
See, my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
    You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
    We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
    You got a fast car
    We go cruising, entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
    You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
    I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
    You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
    You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

Well… Luke Combs did just that and introduced a whole new generation to this talented lady. She was smart enough to hang onto the publishing rights which means she had to approve of his version. So what you’re hearing on the radio right now was approved by her and she’s close to a million dollars in royalties already… So if she’s ok with it being covered, I think you can be ok with it too.

@@tony_n316 I am okay with it being covered I just don't think I have ever heard another version that has the same amount of soul or that I like as much.

    • @rneumeye
      @rneumeye Před 10 měsíci +4

@@tony_n316You don't have to have the writer's permission to cover a song. You only need permission if it's going to be put in a movie, tv, commercial. You just have to pay them royalties.
If he is making millions, PLURAL off with merchandise, concert tickets, sales of the other songs on his album that people may have never bought except for the fame that such an iconic song brought him.... I'm not sure I would say that is an equal trade.

This song speaks to so much about the poverty, hopelessness and conditions that people all over the world are living. Timeless - the more things change, the more they stay the same. Both versions, the original and Luke’s are great but can’t beat Chapman’s - way more poignant. ❤

But he drinks every day from the time he walks through the door 😢 so I never get to see that good man he use to be. Everyone around me treats me horrible..And I am a giving, forgiving, and loving person, a rare person anymore. But they are taking all of that away..they abuse my love and kindness. I have a Challenger..I've loved fast cars and drove, and raced a Chevelle in my youth. But gave my love of the things I loved up for my family. Now all I want to do everytime I get in it, is to keep going.

My dad loved this song and played it all the time when I was growing up. I dropped out of school and got my GED when he had a stroke, his health got better with time until he began leaning on alcohol as a crutch, we fought often, almost every night.
I met a guy, worked at a convenience store and as a waitress, saved up money and we bought a car and left to another state.
The relationship crumbled and not long after I got a call from my dad to tell me he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
I dropped everything to take care of him one last time and he passed away in November of 2022.
Now I'm sitting here listening to all of the music he played when I was a child and watching this song just perfectly narrate my life.
Music is so magical, I'm so grateful he showed me this.

Alanon is a 12-step program for people dealing with somebody else’s alcoholism. AA is for the alcoholic, Alanon is for friends and family of the alcoholic. I recommend it.

I listened this today on my way to work after not having listened to it for years. This song is about how abuse cycles happen. In needing to escape our abusive environment (my mother) we end up blindly running toward more abuse. And we keep running from one place of abuse to the next. I ended up sobbing by the time I got to work. That last stanza was something I experienced with my ex/twins ' bio father. I left him because he added nothing but abuse, was in and out of jobs, gambled away his paychecks, cheated and left the entire weight of everything on my shoulders. I knew I had to leave him when I was inpatient for 24 days (because I had a major abdominal tumor removed plus major abdominal reconstruction). After Day 5, he would call my hospital room to scream at me to "get the f*** out of that bed and get the f*** home!!!" Our twins were 3 and having to take care of his own kids while I recovered was more than he wanted to deal with. I never looked back. My twins are old enough to have figured things out for themselves and want nothing to do with him.

Did anyone notice how the narrative of this song went from being about the plural to singular at the end? The girl who wanted to leave with a lover with a car eventually urges him to leave alone.... He was becoming like her dad and though he made her visible, she wasn't ready to be trapped again.

Incredible how such sad, melancholic and depressive lyrics like this can bring me joy. It's even crazy if you think about because this song tells a sad, sad story. But when she "remembers when we were driving", I drive that car with her with that feeling of hope for better days and that tonight we can make a decision, leave everything behind and live an adventurous life full of opportunities ahead of me.
I'm living, finally a great moment in my life. I'm a public servant, I have a stable job, earn more money teaching private classes onine. Enough to take care of myself, my wife, my parents and younger sister. But I know what struggle is, Ive been there. That's why I identify so much with this song. That feeling of longing for a safe place to be. Today I no longer dream of leaving things behind. But I do look forward to this dream place and moment in my life when I will retire and only worry about loving my wife and keep her safe, healthy and happy. Fifteen years for this magic moment to come. I'm couting down.

The feeling of feeling alone with nothing but willing to give everything for the folks you love even if their backs were turned.
