    The Royal Navy currently uses the Type 23 for anti submarine warfare and the Type 45 for anti air, however the Type 45 is widely considered by many countries to be the most advanced and capable anti air platform on the planet.

    • @zszs100
      @zszs100 Před 3 lety +1

      Why is that? It doesn't have a full size aegis like system due to the smaller platform, the missiles are not that much better than the other modern aa missiles, and it doesn't carry all that many missiles either. Don't forget how they tried to leap too far from the propulsion system, and ended up making it so unreliable that it frequently breaks down. Most advanced and capable anti air? Don't make me laugh. xD

      @@zszs100 You are right that aster 30 on the type 45 is a little bit lacking compared to sm 6 and sm-3 in their more specialist roles- however that’s because they are still using the oldest block of that said missile- and still very competitive pieces of kit. But for the role they were designed for, yes PAAMS is competitive with aegis and Sampson better than spy1d. Spy6 maybe not but that is intended just as much for the ddg x as the latest block of arleigh burkes- right now type 45 has the best radar suite of any destroyer

    Back in the 90's when the United States was building many of the guided missile Destroyers such as the Arleigh Burke class I worked at a machine shop in Chicago that had the contract to make the 8 cell decks which they were called for guided missile launch system. They are the units that you see mounted on the decks of these ships in different configurations that have all of the hatches and mechanisms that open up when the missiles are launched. I ran the big planer mill where I machine out all of the openings where the hatches are as well as all of the internal areas where all of the mechanisms that opened the hatches. The tolerances on all of the machined areas was less than a strand of hair. They were entirely made from armor plate steel and we did everything from the beginning of machining all of the plates to welding everything together to final machining and assembly to shipping them out to be fitted to the ships. We also manufactured all of the above ground MX missile launchers from start to finish. It was a big company of about 650 employees and eventually in the late 90's a Japanese company bought it out and shut it down. Fortunately all of the work we had with the government was already finished up. I also ran very large Giddings and Lewis horizontal milling drilling and boring machines and the largest piece of steel that I ever had to machine weighed 90 tons. It was the ram for very large pile drivers which were used for offshore bridge pilings. We also machined the rest of the parts that made up these very large pile drivers. I was always nervous whenever the overhead cranes had to lift one of these 90 ton pieces to place on the bed of my machine as I had to be right next to it to make sure that it set down on the blocks that I had precisely placed for it to be set on. No one was allowed to be near the area when one of these 90 ton pieces was lifted except for me and the hook up guy. Even though the overhead cranes were 100 ton capacity we were always very nervous every time these heavy parts were lifted. Fortunately we never had any issues and our overhead cranes operators that were 5 stories up were very good at what they did and would never make a lift if they saw something that didn't look right. I was a machinist there for 20 years until the company was bought by the Japanese company and eventually closed and for the last 20 years I worked for a small CNC machine shop that I recently retired from. I spent most of my time there as a prototyping machinist working with our customers designing and machining prototype parts for their products as well as programming and set up for all the machines in the shop. It was fun work and it never felt like a job as I enjoyed what I did. After 40 years as a machinist I still have all of my fingers though I have had stitches many times. Have a great day.

    The hull design of the 052C/D is basically the same.The Chinese Navy officially classified the 052D as a 6000ton class ship(Normal displacement:Including 50% fuel and supplies,100% weapon load).So 052D is hard to reach 8400tons.

    Interesting comparison. The Type 45s are really dedicated air defence destroyers with limited anti-submarine and anti-surface capability. Those roles are left to the Type 23 and future Type 26 frigates.

    Whats the diff between a destroyer and a cruiser, since all the ships are general purpose now. Like how the zumwalt is called a destroyer, while the smaller ticondaroga is called a cruiser, while the burke, which is jsut slightly smaller is a destroyer, but the Chinese call the Type 055 (13000 tons) a destroyer. Should anything bigger than a frigate just be called a destroyer? Cruiser naming is kind of pointless in the modern age, what do u think Jeff?

    I know the video is old. But the German Baden-Württemberg-class is classified as an Frigate and are build and armed accordingly. There is a reason it a F125 where stands fro frigate! It's dosn't carry VLS but can be fitted with after my understanding, and it would most likely use ESSM and Standard missiles due to the radar
    They are primarily designed for low and medium intensity maritime stabilization operations, where they are supposed to provide sea-to-land tactical fire support, asymmetric threat control at sea and support of special forces.

    The Chinese Close-in RAM missiles should not be counted as other missiles, they are just upgraded CIWS. What makes Chinese ships have less missile than the US ships is that Chinese vertical launch system has larger caliber and deeper depth compare to the American one. The sacrifice of missile number returns larger missiles it can carry which brings better performance especially at range stats.

      WE have been waiting a long time. I am really surprised that AirFix has not done it. There is a new company who is selling on ebay what they call Museum Quality ships and they have a QE for 500.00. But the air wing is very bad...not detailed at all, almost two-dimensional. And the radars and electronics are not right. But the hull and basics of the islands are pretty good. I offered them 250 dollars for just the hull and told them how they could detail it and make it worth a lot more. QUite frankly, with the detailed and right air wing models, and the fix on the other, they should be able to fix it up and then lower their profit margin and sell it for about 300-350 dollars and they would sell them. To build on from a plastic injected kit, with the add on photo etch and a full air wng, would cost about$300 for everything you need, including the lighting system...noT including you time. I doubt they will be willing to cut inot their profit margin, then again, I do not think many will sell at what they are asking. Here's a link to their QE: www.ebay.com/itm/HMS-Queen-Elizabeth-Aircraft-Carrier-R08-Handcrafted-Ship-Model-Display-Ready/264072179157 Take a hard look at the F-35Bs...really bad.

    Better but still a bit burry is some cases. I guess only a phone or camera upgrade will solve that issue. Question, are the scales accurate? Because say for example, the type 052D looks a lot bigger than the 052C. Or is this actually the case irl?

    • @steamedcream7671
      @steamedcream7671 Před 4 lety

      Type 52D is just a tiny bit longer than the 52C. Roughly 2.5 meters or so. Both are very similar in length to the Burke class ships but have less draft as well as not being quite as beamy.

      16 ssms are really the bare minimum these days, and harpoon is already obsolete, 16 nsm's or like for like low observability (not stealth like lrasm) is the bair minimum. Taiwan has 700 ton corvettes with 8 supersonic ssms and either 4 or 8 subsonic ssms.

    Will you be going to see the movie Midway?

    • @JeffHead-IdahoUSA
      @JeffHead-IdahoUSA  Před 4 lety +2

      Absolutely. The trailer/teaser videos makes it look like they cover the lead up tp Midway by starting with some of the people in the movie before Pearl Harbor, and show Doolittle as was as Coral Sea. But that is fine...it all led to Midway, and even with the code breaking we had done, it was still a very near thing. I honestly believe in the timing of the torpedo aircraft arriving just enough time before the dive bombers to draw all of the air cover down, and concentrate the AA fire down as well, that when the dive bombers arrived, they started out with 3-4 minutes being completely unopposed...and in reality, that was all they needed. Within five minutes, 4 carriers had been hit badly and all would be sinking. Those brave torpedo attacks cost those squadrons, particularly the one, pretty much all of their aircraft and flyers...but opened the door for the dive bombers to plant 1,000 lb bombs on loaded decks that were getting ready to attack the US Nay carriers. Had they had another 15-20 minutes the story may have come out much differently...but they did not hav that time. Heck, even the very way the main concentration of the Japanese carriers were found was fairly miraculous. So, yes, I will be seeing that movie and see how it stacks up to the other movies made about midway.
