Damn, this is the video I was looking for. Didn't think it was possible to do mid-side GATING until I found this! I was sent WET vocals that had too much goddamn reverb and delay, I ended up using mid/side mode to tame the lingering tail of the reverb and delay. Of course, more taming with mid-side eqing and multiband compression. Dude, you are literally my mixing guru.
The reason you would use mid-side gating is simple Some people want to experiment with their sound and use certain effects and stuff for things they weren't made for, which can result in some really weird but amazing sounds That's what it's for, simply to experiment and get some crazy unique sounds :D
You might use M/S mode if you had a stereo signal and wanted to the gate to focus on opening more on the mid information, rather than the sides, you could turn up the mid level in the detector settings and turn down the sides, for instance, maybe you have a stereo overhead signal and you wanted the gate to focus on kick + snare. Probably not, but. Maybe.
I will look around the Pro-G! Thanks for the video! In addition, I wanted to say that hope that there is somewhere a Gate that triggers with a "fingerprint". On drums I had to use Addictive Trigger to make a sidechain signal. It has the "fingerprint" feature and used it to trigger a gate, and the results were great! That "fingerprint" consist on spectral data about the sound you are wanting to preserve, so all the rest doesn't activate the trigger. (For example a Tom wich it's tuning is near the Snare tuning and there's a lot of bleeding of it.. the trigger will only activate with the Snare hits) That system isn't perfect yet, but it's very cool and works very well. --- Wanted to share that! Thanks for all your videos! I'm always watching them! Give you a big hug from Argentina! (Sorry for my english)
Great video my friend, it would be awesome if you did some audio samples to the things you are explaining so we can here the effect of the adjustments. 😎👍👊🍺
Some analog gates do have a cool effect due to being analog but for precision gating in digital land makes the most sense. Have you compared pro g to waves gate, I find the features in waves great but it doesn't always work the way I want as in it doesnt just work quickly without alot of adjustment (guess the problem with having all the options).
White Sea Studio - This plugin has bothered me since I saw the price. Is there anything this plugin does that isn't just a short cut from doing side chaining and ducking the old fashion way with a pretty user interface?
Cool user interface, with a dynamic timeline that reminds me of that MixingStation for X/M32 mixers app UI, which I love deeply. But the Slate Digital GatesDrums plugin, despite its minimal and somewhat poor UI, have a DEBLEEDER, which is awesome to get rid of Mid and High frequencies on the decays of drum hits (while retaining the HF content on the transients). Anyone knows of another gate vst plugin that does that ???
So right! The only FF plugin that isn't the best in it's field is Pro-DS since Airwindows DeEss came out. The only thing Pro-G is missing is a pre-open so you don't miss the very beginning of things like drum hits. ReaGate is the only gate that I know of that does that. When I use Pro-G, I have to use Andrew Zeleno's trick here: czcams.com/video/10ceXSwJfGE/video.html To be honest, I did this on my own before he made this video, but since I can't prove that and he shared it with the world first, I have my REAPER track templates that make a pre-open named after Andrew!
It would help if you actually showed specific tasteful examples of how to use FabFilter plugins - just talking about things doesn't help much - sounds like you're catering to an elite or expert audience.
Maybe that's true but then the video ins't aimed at you perhaps? If you don't have (and understand) the issues discussed on a daily basis then clearly no need for a PRO-G ... For me the point of any GOOD tutorial (that isn't direct marketing from the manufacturer) is to make you experiment yourself with a little more understanding and therefore more purpose. In most cases you can demo so that's why he wants us to try ourselves , and even feedback our opinions too. We all learn from each other like a neural network that way ;) Much love and another great tutorial , regardless of if you demo the plugin! I am always learning on this channel so thank you brother Nitse (sorry if i spelled it wrong)...

Yeah like the Addictive Trigger fingerprint algorithm. Would be great!
Mid/side gating maybe in mastering or on some stereo context like in a drum bus?
I like tightening the mid of my kick snare bus, makes it punch through the mix more
Great tutorial once again on a great plugin :) As your a big fan of analogue equipment, was wondering what your thoughts are on sound toys plugins?
Treshhold . . . I’m into it.
Mid/Side is probably more used in upward expander mode and less in a typical gating application.
Thank you for this tutorial!

Great tutorial man
great video!
For sfx and heavily auto pan tracks it can be interesting to get mid side paning i think.

Usaría Mid-side-gating para agregar un ruido rosa, (previo al gate) al sonido de la caja o del redoblante. como un canal de efecto.

How good is this compared to the RX7?
Waves ?

seems you are sidechaining your PRO G to video with 0 attack
One word. Lipbalm.
"best" gate.. spoken like a true fabfilter fanboy :(
I mean, considering how much CPU it takes up its pretty dang good XD
Kiloheartz one is also pretty amazing, uses even less CPU.
no even single word on how to route external triggering signals into Pro-G for external sidechaining. WTF?

Seriously hippie? All talking, not one audio example?
