Save 1 dog or help 40? You decide...

  • This week, we had a har decision to make. A little dog named Oreo came to the land with severe anemia caused by tick fever. In order to survive, he needed a blood transfusion. And then another blood transfusion. Just those two treatments cost over £2,000 - with only a 50/50 chance he'd make it even then.
Which left us with a hard question... Do we save one dog and spend £2000+ or do we neuter 50+ dogs and potentially save hundreds of dogs and puppies from suffering?

If you could create an emergency fund for cases like this, I know heaps of us would be forgoing our weekend Frappuccino to donate. You could call it Oreo's Fund in his honour, and cap donations at 5 dollars each. It would be for Oreo-esque emergencies 🥹 but I know you never ask for donations. I can't stomach the idea of letting Oreo go, to save 40 others. I know this is reality and it's heartbreaking of course. Bless you all Niall. Bestest people in the world

The One may save your child's life. The One may comfort a senior citizen who has lost all and has also lost the will to live, or perhaps a young child traumatized or a brave soldier with PTSD who needs a Dog Companion. The One must be saved as must the 40. You do your best and trust in the Love of people to help you fight for all the precious lives.
It's the single dollar of the millions - the 99% - that support most animal charities, not the selfish 1% like trump. The 1% don't even pay their fair share of taxes.
trump's tax act after 6 years has proven to benefit big business and the 1% most of all.

I would save the life that's put before me; in this case it's Oreo. I feel that there is a reason dogs like Oreo cross your path and his life means everything to HIM! Sterilisation is crucial to end suffering on the whole and you are making great strides with the incredible quantity of sterilisations you perform each month. You WILL get there! In the meantime, individual dogs who are already here and suffering because of humans need your help to survive! Although rescue demands difficult decisions which must sometimes be formulated by putting emotions aside, we must hold tightly to our humanity and listen to our hearts at the same time.

You made the correct decision. My old Rottweiler had a huge tumour and cancer had spread, she went into shock when being scanned at the vets and needed emergency surgery. They called us and said we can operate but she may die on the table or you could get 2 weeks with her or another 6 months, it was a gamble. The insurance had stopped due to her age and we had to pay the full price, we took the risk and thought if we get 2 more weeks with her we will take that (you can't put a price on time with them, any time is worth every penny). She lived another 3 years and 8 months! The diagnosis was terrible but the results were amazing, had we have thought about her age, the finances , her chances etc we would have let her go and not got to enjoy nearly another 4 years with her (I know we would have never known this would be the result had we have taken that option) the main thing is we tried, we did all we could and this time it paid off! No matter what the outcome is you've most certainly done the right thing. I hope he has a speedy and full recovery.

I think in order to do what you do every day, you need to save the individual dogs. For your own mental state. Cause that's something you can see, touch, feel. You've saved a life and can watch this dogs life change forever.
With sterilisation, its the bigger picture which is less tangible and easier to get down about it cause its numbers. Are the numbers enough? Am I doing enough etc. Does that make sense?
I feel its good for all you guys to get the win. You guys rock ❤❤❤
Also, sorry to say, for the followers and those who donate, they want to see the individual stories. Thats what we love. There is a happy ever after for a dog and it brightens our otherwise dark days ❤

They’re tough decisions. But I do believe in what you are aiming to do, Niall. You are trying to fix the root of the problem. That by neutering and spaying, there’s going to be less Oreos in the future until hopefully there’s none. If you put a brake on the neutering and spaying and just totally focus on treating all sick strays, 100 years from now, it’s still the same. The suffering will still be rampant. But you have helped a number of dogs have amazing lives and helped those on the streets be happy and healthy. Treated them too. Whilst not taking your eye from the prize which is neutering and spaying. You are doing amazing. The rescue stories tug at the heartstrings (and maybe they’re what drive also for donations to pour in) but population control is the real answer and you’re doing it. You are doing both. You are doing great.

    • @rpima_army4614
      @rpima_army4614 Před 2 měsíci +1

What you say is understandable, but the dogs saved are not statistics, they are also lives that we want to save, because the goal is not to produce them in a chain but rather to treat the most in need while continuing to help others, even at low speed, if fewer dogs are saved it doesn't matter, you already save so many dogs, even if I still understand why you want to save some as much as possible, it would be so better to not let the sick die, even if it is expensive, it is a life, sterilization is not a danger of death, Oreo on the other hand is in serious danger, the other dogs can wait, Oreo on the other hand will die if you do nothing, a jackpot can be opened to make up for the 1000 euro hole, no money will save Oreo. Let's be human, and not mathematicians for pity's sake 🙏❤️

@@rpima_army4614 oh I totally agree with you. I don’t envy Niall’s position at all. He’s the one who has to make these tough decisions. But I get what he wants to do. Sterilisation is the ONLY way to end the suffering. Otherwise, it’s just a vicious cycle. I donate not just to Niall but other organisations as well that treat a lot of sick animals but I feel it’s never enough. They just keep popping up and it breaks your heart until I cannot take it anymore and have to look away. I admire Niall for what he’s trying to do. He and janeythevet inspire me so much that I want to study to be a vet. And if all I do is spay and neuter everyday, that’s more than I could hope for in this lifetime.

@@Sunknee Yeah the US and UK are in need for an independent regulator to regulate the prices that those vets are charging for virtually everything. Walk through the door at the vet and it costs up to €100. A friend of mine had a Giardia test for their dog in the UK last week at £270. Here they are £12. Bit of a difference? Takes 15 minutes and it’s a piece of plastic and a cotton swab. Another friend had her Rottweiler spayed for £650. It costs under £50 here. Another friend had a fractured radius which their vet kindly offered to amputate it for £2500 or plate it for £8000. I had the same surgery on a dog here the other week and it cost £350. So something doesn’t add up does it 🤔 $1000 for a blood transfusion is just crazy money in SE Asia 😳

Unfortunately, Niall, the answer to your question is that an organization’s funds must go to save the larger number of dogs. If someone, or a group, write a check to cover the entire medical costs of the blood transfusions for this dog, that would be so great! But even then, it takes someone to take the dog to the vet; etc., and make sure the dog is responding positively to the treatments. What if something goes wrong and the dog must be euthanized while undergoing treatment? Who will pay for that? And then, there is always another dog behind this dog, whose medical treatment will take thousands of dollars with no guarantee of recovery after the medical treatments are done. Working in a cat shelter for 18 years revealed these very difficult decisions that have to be made. It’s heartbreaking!
I absolutely adore the spice girls! 🥰
FYI: In America, many people cannot afford to pay a thousand dollars for their pet(s) medical care, or whatever the cost of medical care is. Many people euthanize their pet(s) if their pet(s) have a costly medical condition (ongoing); for example, Feline Diabetes, or Cancer. I understand that; medical care in America, for pets, is so expensive! There are also pet owners who take their sick pets to their nearby animal shelters looking for euthanasia for their pet. And sadly for the pets, there are owners who dump their pet(s) on the city streets, or at parks, or wherever they happen to be, when they find out their pets need medical care, whether they can afford it or not.

I think the Billy, Tina, Oreo and Mario et al exception's based on who knows what instinct in the moment keep you very human. Since 'we' know about you through X Twitter & these CZcams videos - we get to share you and your team's abundant empathy for these we souls that instinct tapped your shoulder to give them one last shot at joy in an otherwise rough old life they may have lived. Still easily see Mr Fox running after the food scooter, every instinct screaming save him! There he is loving his new life and pouring all that joy into a family he can call his own. Best wishes & keep hearing your instinctive taps.

I’m so glad you explained the dilemma that animal rescues go through. People want to open shelters but the best thing to do is to volunteer at or donate to an existing animal shelter. I would have saved Oreo too but would have been stressing about the dogs not being sterilised. You’re only human Niall!

I would definitely donate for dogs in need of emergency treatment like Oreo, a separate funding for each emergency could be the way to tackle this dilemma. There is a cat charity here in Devon who do just that. When emergency vet's bills are needed for sick cats they put the story up on Facebook and ask for donations. They show how much is raised as they are doing Facebook posts. What's leftover is then used for their other work. Primarily neutering. Thank you for saving Oreo 🙏

As Mr Spock would say " the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" as he was dying of radiation poisoning. Many of us have been in the same boat. During covid was the absolute worst time to have a sick dog. I lost a 6 mth old puppy in the back of my car in a crate 10 feet from the door of an animal emergency hospital. He and his sister started vomiting. We spent 6 hrs in the parking lot of a clinic without shade waiting in the line to be seen. Never made it in the door. Got referred to another hospital a 90 minute drive away because they had no open hospital beds. Basically pre admitted to hospital b. Arrived there and called to let them know we had arrived. Sat in the parking lot for another 90 minutes and he was dead from dehydration. I ended up transferring the girl to the vet school 48 hrs later cause they wanted to euthanize her because her immune system was gone. So 6,000 dollars later....she is recovered and doing well. I still have PTSD ....it started on a sunday morning. I still remember my feet hitting the ground and every small painful detail. What if i hadnt taken care of the rest of the dogs first befoe i left. Why was i so clueless to leave without thinking i would have to wait hrs in parking lots with no shade? I have a truck outfitted for dog travels. Why did i take my daily driver instead of my dog truck which had my emergency bag where i could have given subq IV fluids while we waited....Anyway very glad for Oreo. I totally feel your pain. It probably took 12 weeks before i didnt have to force myself out of bed on Sunday mornings and relive every moment and his death all over again. RIP Kemosabi....i miss you

You asked what we think: what would I do? Did you do the right thing? Honestly, your understanding of the situation and what other dogs are needing help makes you the expert. Plus it’s your rescue, which means you’re right. If Oreo does not make it, you filled his last days with love, food, water, & shelter. It’s hard to quantify that in my mind. I’m a nurse and work in elder care. The transition of the soul has a certain beauty to it. We all die, making those last days, weeks, more comfortable and stable is important. If Oreo lives, then you save a dog from certain death. Could you help 40 other dogs, yes, can you save one life or give comfort to the dying yes. But there isnt an equation for how those numbers work. I say do what you can, if you are struggling with doing the right thing, sometimes you have to follow your heart. You face many paths each day, 100 things that you could choose, that would not benefit anyone. 3 paths that benefit another or many living beings. If you picked that path to help another soul, I say you did the right thing. I too struggle with this. When in exhausted, I overthink it. But your helping change the world for one dog at a time, over time you have changed the world for all the dogs where you live. Keep taking that path forward. Do not give up, when you chose to continue each day, your saving lives.
You have helped one sick dog, that recalling impacted the world, in hind sight, easy call, but you make a difference. 3 months from now you’ll know it was the right thing to do.

And I'm sure, you'll always get enough money from us supporters who love you and what you're doing day and night, if there are dogs like Billy, Mario, Oreo and all the other poor souls who desperately need your help!. SO: Please do not hesitate to ask us for money in these situations!! We are behind you! Big Love from Germany ❤

Maybe it's just a slight shift from an either/or perspective to a both-and perspective. Where one aspect of your work doesn't cancel out the other but support and complement each other. So the big sterilising vision supports individual dogs by preventing future suffering, and helping individual dogs obviously helps that one dog, and also keeps you going and engages your followers by highlighting the importance of that one life. It's always stories that warm the heart and it's the heart that prompts action!
So I guess you can do both (with in reason obviously!), and it's OK to let individual dogs pull at your heart strings to prompt help from you and us followers. I love the idea of a separate emergency fund for individual dogs that someone else suggested. I also hope you get more hands on deck to help with the groundwork and decision making!
This is basically what you're instinctively doing already doing, and I'm in forever awe of your drive and compassion 🙏

  • @robintrueblood3781

Even tho the Big picture makes more sense on paper, I think the individual cases are what brings out your humanity. I appreciate the hard decisions you make everyday, I seriously can’t even imagine! But sending your dilemma out to your followers may help make decisions about life and death a little easier. An emergency fund for the seemingly most hopeless cases might ease your conscious, as that money would only be set aside for the “hopeless “ dogs, that just need a shot. So glad t hear Oreo is improving, I know he is happy with your decision 🥰

I would do what you did. What a dilemma though. I do feel though that stories like Oreo's compel more people to give. It gives them hope that their limited funds might make a difference. Then, the giving in turn adds to the coffers so more dogs are helped as a result. It keeps the cycle going.

As a rescuer myself, if I have the money, I save the one in front of me. The money always seems to replenish. If the amount is too much and the amount of time I get with the dog (1 month vs 1 year etc) that also affects my choice. If they do not get the quality of life they deserve, as hard as it is, I let them go.

I think whatever decision you make at that crucial moment is the best. It is also important to follow your heart and not always the practical things. Sleepness nights will always exist because you have to make difficult decisions. There is only so much you can do and try to have peace with the decision you made.
