  • You have to slowly get your indoor seed starts acclimated to the ultra violet/UV rays of the sun. If you don't, they will get damaged and there is a great risk they will die off.

    My poor seedlings, I'm surprised any of them have survived my harsh treatment. But how can I care for so many, over 400, each vying for my attention. Actually I only lost two seedlings to transfer shock. Some might think my treatment as cruel, but in reality it is tough love. Rain, wind, cloudy skies, or sunshine, they go outside as long as it is a few degrees above freezing, and they don't come back inside on nights so long as the forecasted temperature is forty degrees or warmer (I let them stay out at 39F last night.). As soon as a majority of the seedlings have sprouted in the starting trays, they go outside to make room for another batch of seed starts. I have fifteen 1020 trays packed full of seedlings. My dining room table isn't large enough to handle them all. Now they are occupying kitchen counter space, and covering the coffee table in the living room. Make Room! Make Room! I have more seeds to plant. In a week I will be planting potatoes, and sowing seed starts for zucchini, Crookneck Squash, Lemon Squash, Sugar Baby Watermelon, and cantaloupe. I have no idea where I am going to put them. The bedroom? My one saving grace, is I will start transplanting my seed starts for Japanese Giant Red Mustard, Southern Curley Mustard, and Fordhook Swiss Chard. They are in 12 cell trays. That will free up... let me see, a half 1020 tray. Ugh, I am down to my last tray. What to do; what to do?

    I’ve been using a 4 by 12 mini hoop house covered with one layer of clear plastic to harden off. It gets morning sun only, after a few days I pick it up roll it on it’s side and let the plants get a couple hours of straight morning sun after doing this for a couple more days if the leaves aren’t complaining I’ll check out the forecast and if I see 2-3 days of clouds that’s when I put them out. Done this for the last three years and it’s worked well for me. Gradually increase time of sun exposure this is simplified version

    Thank you for so much valuable information about hardening off... and every topic you share! You spoke of indoor grown seedlings not being used to the sun's UV rays. If seedlings were grown indoors under full spectrum grow lights would they still be as vulnerable to the same levels of sun or could the hardening off process be a little less gingerly?

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Very glad to share. I am not sure if full spectrum produces UV, so you would need to know that. If they did it would help toughen them up. You would still have to do an abbreviated process though as the sun is stronger.

    Gary, I have orchids indoors and I cannot take my seedlings in and out because I'm afraid of bringing pests in house which will kill my orchids. Can I take them out when the night and daytime temperature is above sixty degrees Fahrenheit?

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 4 měsíci

      You can harden them off when the night are no longer freezing. You may have to up pot the plants if they get to larger.

      I shorter version of acclimation is needed. You can let them sit out on a full cloudy day for a couple days.

    How can you did this if you work 9-5 5 days a week? I would have no choice but to leave them out. I have very little shade and it isn’t all day.

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 4 měsíci +3

      You can pick a side of the house that might just get morning sun, like and east side. Or you can buy shade cloth and use that or even put them under and outdoor table or such. I would also start on a Saturday so you get 2 days worth in.

    I have been using your seed starting methods for a few years now with great success. However, this year I have a mystery. I started two different types of tomato seeds back in January. They germinated within a week grew to about an inch and a half tall, and grew no further. I have been using the same set up for a number of years which includes the fan blade LED light that you recommended in previous videos. The set up was exactly the same as in previous years. As of today, those seedlings grew no taller. One variety had started its second set of leaves, the other variety nothing after germination. Do you have any idea why this would happen? I looked at the root system when I was taking it all apart today and there was plenty of root development, but they never grew taller and never developed leaves. Watered as I have always done. Any ideas? Thank you.

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 4 měsíci

      I dont know why it would happen if all things are basically the same. I would just feed them more nitrogen at this point. Any water soluble would work. If no change in 7 days feed them again. I would also start some new plants. You have time. Good luck.

    Do I still need to harden off seedlings that have been growing in a clear plastic greenhouse? This is the first year I've used it rather than going straight from grow lights to hardening off out doors, so I'm really not sure and I'd rather not stunt or kill anything.

    • @sparkysoutdoors6240
      @sparkysoutdoors6240 Před 4 měsíci +2

      When you move them outside choose a cloudy day followed by a couple more cloudy or partly cloudy days

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Depends if the greenhouse blocks the UV rays. Some do. Generally speaking you need a much more reduced acclimation to the full sun. as mention a couple cloudy days outside is fine. UV rays are typically diminished with plastic but some are coated to reduce UV a lot. It would tell you.
