SPIDER PLANT REPOTTING: REVITALIZING AN UNHAPPY PLANT
My Spider Plant was oh so sad. The leaves had faded, brown tips were everywhere & the babies had dried up. See what I did to revitalize it (yes, there are before & after pics) & bring it back to glory.

I felt bad for my Spider Plant-it was so unhappy. But all that has changed in just a few months time. Now it’s a healthy green & babies have appeared. What did I do to make this happen? The solution is simple: spider plant repotting. I revitalized my Spider Plant by repotting & moving it to a new location.
My Spider Plant was happily growing outdoors in coastal California (USDA hardiness zone 10a) but then I moved & brought it along. It took a turn the 2nd year of living here in Tucson (Zone 9a) & unhappiness set in. I had it hanging right outside my front door & the hot, dry, sunny summers here in the Sonoran Desert had taken their toll.
The color had faded to a yellowish-green & most of the leaves (especially the outer ones) were badly tipped brown. It was only getting 2 hours of the morning sun but in the desert in summer, it’s brutal. Plus, the babies were smaller, much fewer in number & some had dried up completely. And as it turns out, my plant was very pot bound.

6:09 is when story time ends and she re pots the spider plant . Your welcome
Oh my lord. You are the cutest human I have seen in a very long time. My mother used to make me wake up at 6am every morning to garden outside before the sun rose and it got hot. My extent of plant knowledge - save re-potting plants she would bring home from the nursery and....watering and weeding. Green thumb must have skipped a generation. Mom always had spider plants in the house. I bought 9 adorable tiny baby plants from a local nursery and promptly unintentionally murdered all except the hardy spider plant (named Araña). Was looking to make her happier and to propogate her babies and found this video - and I am so grateful this morning!
I love your energy so much, its a good vibe for sure. I wanna be like u when I grow up!😄 I'm a big, little kid and a plant mom of 15 yrs! Lol hopefully many more to come. Goals.
Thanks for this. Mine looks exceedingly worse than yours, but I'm so glad you provided a 3-month update. It gives me the push to go ahead and cut off a lot of it and give it a fresh start. Mine is has extremely long plant babies (3-4ft), but they are all crispy and look worse than the babies you have coming off yours. I'm so glad you're knowledgeable about EVERYTHING. I have never seen another plantuber who showed how to trim a rootball. Anyway, thanks so much. I'm in the garden due to the corona shutdown and your videos really help me!
Wow, she really bounced back pretty quickly. I have the variegated one and I just love it so much. Thanks for this video it was helpful and fun.
Good to hear Holly! Yes, my spider plant is so much happier now. It greened up & produced babies fast! Nell
Poor plant! I remember when u potted it in the yellow pot and hung it on the front entrance to your home. U had only been in Arizona 5 weeks and didn't realize how intense the sun and temps would be. Obviously, spider plant s are strong as steel! Yours survived! Good job!
I’ve never seen anyone repot to a much smaller pot! Even with the roots shaved off, that new pot seems way too small! 🙁
Yes, just found this. I have a spider plant and it does all things you mentioned. It can look pretty rough when it needs attention. Thank you for sharing.
You are very good at giving good information
Thank you! Nell
Thank you! I have a toddler stage spider plant and I'm hoping it will grow and put on babies. I'm keeping it by a West window and occasionally I have put it under a grow light for a short while. I enjoyed watching your video!
I have always used soil from the garden for my spider plants and they have grown so well. Never have I lost any.
Lovely plant, nice and strong looking .
Cheers on tackling that root ball!
Super helpful, as always!
Thank you so much that was a big help because I'm transplanting Mayan today and I didn't realize that if the pot is not real big it does Grace babies quicker how about that but thank you so much
I've heard a few people say that spider plants are super sensitive to Florida burn as well and that if u use fluoridated tap water it makes the tips brown.🤷♀️
Thank you, very helpful.
Lovely video. Thank you.
Wow that bounced back very nicely!
It sure did! And produced babies to boot. Spider Plants are tough. Nell
You are hilarious ma'am! Thank you so much for the humor in learning this new task of repotting for me! God bless.
I wish I'd checked your video before repotting my spider. I was afraid of manhandling it too much. It didn't mind the little I did because 2 of the 3 plants just put of baby shoots.
Informative video. I would have liked to see how you fully pruned the plant and what was left of it. My large, one happy spider plant turned yellow and then brown in the winter where, in the Uk, the days are very short. I suspect my plant is pruning as well so I would have liked to see how you did yours.
I don't have good luck with spider plants but yours look gorgeous.. Thanks for sharing
Thank you. It wasn't looking good until I repotted & brought it inside. Dounbg great now & loaded with babies. Nell
Please zoom in to the plants to show us a closer look thanks
I usually do Aisha. You can see close ups in the post: www.joyusgarden.com/spider-plant-repotting-revitalizing-an-unhappy-plant/ Nell
Your spider plant look beatiful and tough,,,,,I have two spider plant and in one year it's give 50 spider babies,,,,more you give it the more they give it back,,,like your video
hahaha cute! "I was dreaming on that one!"
Wonderful great job so beautiful
Well thank you vp! Nell
@@JoyUsGarden i love your videos so informative
The "ugly duckling" comes into her own. Beautiful transformation.
Dori - From yellow & faded to deep green with babies. It came back faster than I thought. Nell
looks beautiful after its hair cut
Maria - It's doing great now! Nell
ohhhhhhhhhhh sup nell
Edit: that plant grows naturally under my mango tree and we cut the grass that grows under the tree also cutting down the plant and it always grows back taught it was a wild plant
Hey there Kevin - Oh my goodness! That just proves how tough spider plants are. Nell
Can you use the tubers to start a new spider plant? Thank you so much for sharing this with us. If you use the tubers will they then become a mother plant? I mean just the tubers.
Omg this is so funny watched like 5 times very helpful and those roots are beautiful
That’s just one mother plant? I have 3 in 1 pot that need a repot and I’m wondering whether I should divide or not. Also if I should use a taller or wider pot or if it matters. Thanks, I learn a lot from your videos!
Your plant looks amazing after the repotting. I repotted mine one time and cut back the roots and it died less than a month later. I believe I know why (the potting soil) and cutting back too much of the roots. UGH!!!
Oh dear. Mine is very happy now & even more babies are appearing. Nell
Needed this. Mine is going limp. Its variegated. Just checking advise on overwatering (I think that's the issue...I tend to do that). Thanks
Yes, many people over water their plants so you're not alone. Spider Plants store water in their thicks roots & tubers. Nell
Why do you cut the roots down? Maybe I missed it in the video(sorry if I did)Cutting down the roots to revive a plant is counterintuitive to me. Wouldn't you want to keep as much of the roots if they look healthy?
What kind of spider plant is this? I like all the green xolor!
I would have subscribed to your channel. I couldn't believe it took you almost 6 min to get started, I almost clicked away.
I hear ya. Don't forget, you can always slide the timeline on the video, or increase the speed too.
Hey Nell what if you repot n you cut back it’s roots , to slow down the babies from growing what will happen n will that hurt the plant thanks 🙏🏽😊
Can you use African violet mix when repotting spider plants, it will be indoors?
Hi nell, the bottom leaves that are touching the pot, keep turning brown and dying off, babies look healthy but the leaves are droopy and bent. The container it’s in is semi warped from the roots. Is it time to repot it?
mine turned greyish... I dont know why, I transplanted it because it needed a new pot away from a Desert Rose that needed to receive direct sun... so to avoid to much sun on the spider, I changed it, but right after started to turn grey on the leaves...
Do you have any advise? I would apreciate it...
I took my spider plant out of the pot & into a jar with water. It has several tubers will it survive???
okay. This episode is perfect timing. I have a spider plant which will eventually be hung, well ... actually, it's already hung, but, it will be hung in a larger pot It's doing very well, very healthy. GORGEOUS - But it's a little rootbound. 8:00 Your spider plant, is very root bound.
I've read that spider plants prefer to be root bound :)
Yup - I was way off on this one! But all ended well & the plant is happy as can be. Nell
@@SpadeTheCat Yes, they produce babies best when slightly pot bound. But, this one was so pot bound & burned it needed it. Nell
@@JoyUsGarden okay. As is mine, which fell 3 ft from my desk. 😲 😏
Did you cut off the entire leaf of the ones that were 1/2 brown or did you just cut off the brown?
Underestimating the root ball to the new pot size..been there! ^^ I adore my two spider plants gifted to me as babies, they are the usual variegated variety. But I am trying to find an all-green spider plant like Nell's. Are they fairly rare? I have not seen them for sale at least here in my corner of Maryland, or some shops in Virginia. :)
Oh yes, I've repotted 100's of plants & sometimes have missed the mark! I got my plant in CA a few years ago. I've seen the solid green variety here in AZ too. Nell
Hello! I came here for a question on my variegated spider. I just brought it in the house for the winter. I feel like it may have been shocked by moving it inside. It was doing absolutely beautiful on my front deck with little bit of morning sun. It grew babies better then any of my spider plants have ever done. I've never seen anything like it! Literally about 150 babies...atleast! I have been clipping as they are ready and propagating them and potting and giving away to friends. My problem I am having is there is a brown stripe down the middle of alot the leaves. Not the tips like you
Typically get on a spider. I will be repotting eventually but kinda wanted to wait until I got through the winter. And I do have it sitting in a window that gets morning sun. Can you help me with what I should do? Thank you!
Hey! What would you suggest for a sad and droopy spider plant? Is that normal or there is some kind of problem?Usually I just collect babies, throw the original plant and pot the babies. And I have a new plant. Nice and beautiful until these babies put new babies and the whole plant becomes like a uncut grass for a dog to lie on. :D
Spider pkants can be hard to find at tines around here!
I don't know why Lisa. They produce babies like crazy when happy! Nell
What are coco quad chips?
It was put into a smaller pot??? Why??? Didn't have the info I'm looking for :(
I nearly killed my spider plants last time I repotted them, and I thought it was because I got rid of so many of the micro-roots that were throughout the pot (v thin network of roots, don't know their real name). Should one try not to disturb those as much as possible? Or perhaps it was something else that sent them into such shock?
Im hear looking for that answer. She was so fun to watch.
Please tell me where the blog is for this video. I would like step by step instructions and what to put in my pot. Thank you!
Hi Nell, a different repotting question. I reported my string of pearls and it is now dying 😭 what can I do to fix it? Before repotting it was thriving
If it is dying from the top/base of the plant, it is probably too wet, so you could take cuttings to replace it. Make sure the soil is not at all heavy as they don't like wet feet.
How would you describe its appearance? 🌿
Did you use succulent mix Mercedes? Make it drains well. Nell
JoyUsGarden hi Nell yes I did use succulent mix. But it is dying badly. I’m not sure if this is was right or not, but I did also put Little Rock’s in the bottom of the pot because the pot did not have a drain hole
Toby Byford it is just dying and it is dying from the very top. It is drying out bad
Mam,
Why its leaf burning? Is it not rectified?
It was getting too much sun & heat. Now it's inside & green as can be. Nell
I keep killing my spider plants :( hopefully I learn how to keep my last 2 babies alive
same here. I do good and then BAM!!! they are going south. Well it does depend on the variegation of the plant. I do better with the greener spider plants with the white in the center vs the other way around.
Keep it in bright indirect sun and soil should be a bit dry in between watering...I have tons of spider plants and babies cannot handle to much water and too much sun either...you also can mist in the morning when it's too hot weather.
Many people over water them. Here's a care post & video for you: www.joyusgarden.com/spider-plants-easy-care-durable-can/ Nell
Mine too. I assumed it was over watering and perhaps scorching in front of the window. I chilled out on watering following my moisture meter, just spritzing and I do only use distilled.. and moved it over on the shower rod next to my monstera in a slightly ,ore shady spot. It made matters worse. I legit don’t know what happened. I stopped watering and it’s drastically worsened. It was just one weeks difference. I have bad luck with easy plants and good luck with hard plants. Why.
Process starts at 6:22
My shoots where the spiderbabies are growing are starting to turn brown (from the top/closer to the dirt) and dying..I can't find any info as to why..Nell, please help!
Hi Dana - I can tell you why the stems on mine were drying out & dying: too much sun, too much heat & not being able to hold water. Nell
Explain to me the charcoal?
Charcoal aids airation and water drainage through the soil, as well as purification to some degree (supposedly) 🌿
Yes, it sweetens the soil & ups the ante on the drainage factor. Nell
whay do they dray on the endes
It's a reaction to the dry air. Nell
@@JoyUsGarden what han one do about that Nell
Mine is bigger and in a smaller pot, am i doing it right ? 😮 if been told never to repot it if i want to get lot of spider lings.
Yes..I observed mine produce babies faster in a smaller pot..I have planted the same babies in the larger pot and it's still not having any babies compared to the smaller pots.
Yes, Spider Plant produce more pups if they're slightly tight in their pots. Spider Plants grow like crazy so you'll need to repot it at some point. Mine started producing babies a couple of months after its repotting. Nell
What do you mean a girly job? Gardening is the best!
Gardening is the best! I've been lucky to have it as my business. I'm usually covered in dirt & sweat! Nell
shall one water it rather often
Christina - It depends on your environment. I water mine once a week in a hot climate & once every 2-3 weeks in winter. Nell
@@JoyUsGarden I dont live in a hot klimat i live in europe Sweden are you on facebook Nell
If you had been watering it it would have been ok.
