I love watching Joe Louis old fight footage. People talk about his right hand but I love that left hook he hits them with on the inside. Most fighters you can see their left hook coming. They throw it to wide but Louis's is textbook. The way he throws it in close and the way he comes back with it after a right hand. Joe was one of the first Heavyweight Champions who really utilize combination punching more so than the previous Heavyweight Champions before him. He sat down on his punches too. He really drove them into his opponents. Those body shots on Max Schmeling in their rematch were brutal.

Joe Louis got a book called “How To Box” he details at great length about how to throw punches is a very good book to read.

note THERE WAS a 12 years age difference here - Jack Sharkey was born in 1902 and Joe Louis in 1914 - some times it is better to call off a career then to end on a bad note !

I met Jack at a small New England pub in 1978. He came in the pub and sat next to me at the bar and ordered scallops & chips as he pounded on the bar top.
Talked for a while, seemed like a good guy.

Sharkey looks the most flat footed boxer of all time

Louis was way ahead of his time, that attributed to his dominance , mid to late 30s he was poetry in motion every punch with intent, economical with it and an absolutely ruthless finisher, 1 of a kind !!

well, then perhaps The Old Master, Joe Gans was the most ahead fighter of all time. imagine, Louis style was based on his trainer Joe Blackburn and Gans defeated Blackburn thrice.

Ray Gan Blackburn beat Joe Gans too, and don’t down play him the man fought the “Boston Bonecrusher “ Sam Langford 6 times and all of the fights end in a draw so give Jack Blackburn the respect he’s earned.

Well, Louis was lucky he fought Sharkey when Sharkey was completely over the hill. He probably would have defeated even a prime Sharkey, but would have had the fight of his life on his hands.

Was Louis Great ? Yea But I still think he is NOT what everyone makes him out to be.
There is No Way he Beats Ali....He Probably loses to Marciano even if he is in his prime.
His chin was Ok but Not Great and THAT is NOT exactly a good thing had he had to go vs Guys Like
Foreman, Liston and a Young Mike Tyson.
I could REALISTICALLY see him Losing head to head prime vs prime to every guy I listed.

@@alivstyson1864 I could also see all those guys getting knocked out by Louis. Including Ali who was susceptible to right hands. Each and everyone of those fighters you listed could be hit and hurt.

@@alivstyson1864 he beat Billy Conn twice. Another thing. Liston fought a 190 lb fighter called Eddie machan and couldn't knock him out. Tyson was 190 to 220 lbs most of his career at 5'11. Joe Louis was 190 to 210 lbs most of his career knocking out 6'2 plus 230 to 250 lb men who could move and punch. Louis could be caught no doubt but had a chin and had murderous power and accuracy. If Ali trades with him it's gg. Ali was also hurt by men and hit by ppl with shorter reach and height. Ali had amazing reflexes timing coordination and skill but lack technically which got him exposed occasionally. Ron Lyle is no hof but was winning his fight before ko. Louis would ear Ali alive trying to play with him like that. Ali is one if the greatest athletes in boxing but wasn't very technical.

Sharkey was way better than this. You are right as all his footspeed is gone, he is basically fighting as a flat footed Cowboy fighter of the previous era. He wasn't a flat footed fighter he had really quick feet and they are totally gone. He isn't gonna beat this version of Joe Louis but he certainly would have fared much better which i think is what your alluding to. His defense in this fight is just awful he is getting rocked non-stop he had too much time off and got too old.
