    Lionel my 13 yr old triathlete son and I met you at the Collins Cup. It was the day before the race, you just came in from a ride, and although clearly wanting to get back to the room you were kind, engaging and generous with your time and he was so thrilled. He looks up to you and it was great and seeing you and Sam the next day go to the wire was awesome. Go gettem in Kona!!!

      @jhdg I don't think that's the case. This new coach has a lot of patience because "I'm always right" is hard-wired into Lionel's brain. But the swimming proves he needs a coach. And if he needs it bad enough fear of losing will make him stay. But yea, coach has to be a patient man.

    I love how Mikal gets to the heart of the matter in a nutshell: work out what went wrong/right before, take solace in the fact that you have done well in Kona before and trust in your training & turn up to race on race day. The end.

    Performance tips LS should use to shave minutes off next IM based on what I see in this vid.
    1. Ride rim brakes. They are way more aero as less spokes and the braking surface is molded into the rim instead of a pizza cutter that catches the wind at ALL angles. Faster wheel changes and no rubbing rotors! No travel dramas. Rim brake is also lighter. Lighter bikes are like women with small waists...just inspires you to you grip it and rip it.
    2. Cooler is faster - wear a visor instead of a full cap. White to reflect. Visor lets your head heat rise vs insulate in the cap material.
    3. Cushion for the push'n - Alphafly is the best shoe for the IM. The max cush and carbon plate let you carry the most speed with the least fatigue metabolites. Chose a light colo and for less race day heat retention.
    4. Bike set up...not sure why his seat is so high. Lower seat means more aero and better breathing. Move cleats right back to activate the bigger muscles more. Midfoot cleat is worth the deep dive. Relying on the weakest muscle in the leg aka calves isnt a good idea for the IM athlete who just has to hold 300w for hours. Pedal with the heel down vs up. Ever tried to stomp a can? Use your ball of foot or midfoot? Exactly...How about putting a shovel into hard ground? Midfoot = more power and or sustained power with less fatigue metabolites.
    5. Strip show - Run a 2 piece outfit vs 1 piece. Showing some belly skin will help you stay cooler vs trapping in belly heat with a onsie.

    I'm not an elite athlete like these guys, but I do enjoy taking the bike out on really hot days. I went for 60 minutes when it was 106 outside with the goal of staying in zones 2 and 3. Zone 2 wasn't bad at all, but a few climbs where I seemed to rocket past zone 3 was eye opening. The heat took over! It started with dizziness and rapid heart rate so I sensibly pulled into a shady spot and rested. Clearly training in extreme heat is a totally different animal.

    Lionel, usually if you get your sodium loss tested, it’s measured in mg/L. So if you lose 1300mg or 1.3g/L and sweat 3L/hr your body needs 3600mg/hr. The difference between replacing 1L per hour with 1300mg Na x5 hours and replacing 3L of water per hour with 3600mg sodium is a deficit of 10L of fluid (22 pounds) and 13,000mg or 13g of Na.

    fear of passing out in the heat while racing/training is real when you have a high tolerance because passing out sneaks up on you. its not without warning, but the high tolerance means you are ignoring the warning signals. I've passed out from dehydration/heat after ignoring the lightheadedness and seeing spots for a long time. I finished my training and got in the car. it was after I switched off from persistence mode to relax mode that I passed out without warning. once this happens, you fear that it will happen again.

    There’s an additional way to measure heat training acclimation very closely. It’s similar to blood lactate measurements but instead you have to measure blood plasma levels over the entirety of the heat training phase. The goal is to increase blood plasma levels. But you have to find a pattern because the levels fluctuate with the intensity of training. And u may have to go to a doc to get samples safely and measured accurately

    The altitude density is not a thing for endurance performance. It doesn’t have an impact on humans exercising. There is no evidence supporting that if the density altitude is 2000m it is equal to being on 2000m pressure (real) altitude.

    • @alexjohnson6462
      @alexjohnson6462 Před rokem +2

      Density altitude provides you the equivalent of the real pressure. Not sure why you think it would not impact performance. DA is based on the real pressure and the real temperatute at thd time of measurement. Both pressure and temperature affect an athletes physiology.
      There's a reason pilots have long used DA, and nowadays especially long distance target shooters use density altitude to get super precise drop calculations. Because it is much more accurate than relying on the ISA predicted pressure at altitude formula which does not take current temperature into account (it just uses a lapse rate figure adjusted off of standard temperature at sea level).
      DA gives the real pressure (minus small error for humidity which can still be adjusted for if one wants). Using DA is the same as taking out your Kestrel and measuring the pressure at that given moment. The Kestrel literally uses the measured pressure at that moment to derive the DA calculation.

    • @danielappelhans3489
      @danielappelhans3489 Před rokem

      @@alexjohnson6462 the reason I think its not impacting is because there is no research that shows it has an affect on endurance performance. Or more precisely - it hasn't been investigated. And that seems to be the case because there is no need for it from a physiological standpoint. Once the air enters the lungs it will have a temp of around 37° and humidity of 100%, equalising the outside temp/humidity. Look it up yourself. I have done it for a few hours and couldn't find any evidence suggesting that is has an impact on endurance performance. Just because it has an influence on Airplanes/turbines, doesn't mean it has on the body/physiology.

    Lionel: "...Its only 95 degrees today. Its not even really that hot..."
    Ugg. This reminds me I need to get the heck out of this desert state heckhole called Florida. Been here 12 years now and I have not heat adapted one bit. In fact, this past year I seem to have grown even more heat intolerant. I'm at my wits end.
    Training is impossible here except for January and February. Anything over 68 degrees to 70 Fahrenheit is absolutely unsufferable in Florida, never mind 90-plus degrees.
    I need to find a nice high altitude town (low 70's daily high temps in August, but a town which also is not snowy for 6 months of the year which would impede outdoor bike riding most of the year). Anyone have any good suggestions where to move to for good year round training?

      That being said, Clermont Florida is still the Mecca for triathlon training on the entire east coast. The USA Triathlon National Training Center is here after all. The area definitely needs more triathlon love. The West seems to get all the attention lately.
      If you want to train for Kona, you would be better off doing it here than in Tucson or Boulder. That unbearable humidity cannot be replicated in the desert states. Thats what you really need to adapt to even more than the heat.

      San Francisco area is as cool as you describe and doesn’t get much snow.
