  • Knowing how to mix your own earth tones is a very useful skill, even if you don't have to do it all that often. This kind of exercise helps students to better understand their colors, which will help them mix colors more accurately and with less frustration. In this video I make burnt sienna, raw sienna, burnt umber, raw umber, yellow ochre, and van dyke brown using only red, yellow, and blue.
The specific colors I used were Brilliant Red, Lemon Yellow, and Pthalo Blue from Rosco, which I got from their Scenic Sets. Check out their website!

Do earth tones have a color bias/temperature? Does it matter if I mix a raw umber with a warm or cool green? Will one make a ‘duller’ color?

I'm so glad you found the videos helpful! Earth tones do have a color bias/temperature, like burnt umber is very warm and biased to red. And it is all kind of relative: yellow ochre is warmer than raw sienna, but both would be considered warm. Teeeeechnically the rules I explained in the color theory video apply to these as well, so mixing a raw umber with a warm or cool green would make slightly different results... however, earth tones are frankly so MUDDY and dull anyways, that you can get by just fine with any red, yellow, and blue no matter its bias. (In my opinion). I haven't messed around with it extensively, but I have done this same exercise with ultramarine blue instead of pthalo, and it worked great. Does that help? :)

Okay!!! 1st! I hate you for that drastically perfect circles you paint freehand, like seriously, stop showing off already!!
2nd, The earth tone triad thingy, Oh wait, you wanted to act like it wasnt straight magic which you clearly have as my head is off my shoulders. WTF!! I could be the #1 bonehead that self-taught...himsellf...aaargh. Ha. Basically, I watched every other video on you tube explaining some reblence of color and once and awhile they said the word theory, ha. But that earth tone and triad....literally, will be an AH-Ha moment. Joking aside, really cant thank you enough for sharing that and surprised I havent heard it elsewhere or more if is common.
If the God's allow and we ever cross paths, dinner is on me, or drinks, or a brush by on the sidewalk, or perhaps being in the same city...its on me....Ok lost track of that attempt at giving praise. HAHA. sidenote, if you ever get arrestted and want no one to know, I will use the force, and bail you out , and mum's the word. I think by now, my cringe factor is shining...so back in the cage...aka studio for me. BE WELL and stay smilin'
