  • Stephen A. Smith argues that John Calipari's resume as head coach of University of Kentucky basketball does not live up to the types of "one-and-done" players he's recruited during his time there.

    Bill self is the real under achiever here what's the point to get 1st seeds every time in the Midwest if you can't even get to the final four . Callipari took a banged up Kentucky to a finals appearance and led them to an undefeated season the following year and reached the final four before losing to a good Wisconsin team ask yourself who is the real underachiever here #ggmu

    Oh, he can only recruit? He can't coach? Then explain how he was able to do so well at UMass and Memphis? At UMass, he got them to the Final Four with only one NBA player on that roster. In 2008, he had Rose and CDR (not a superstar) and a role playing big man in Dorsey.
    It wasn't until he got to Kentucky did his teams start to look like this and even then, he's starting over every single year. Ask Coach K how well his one and dones have done outside of 2015? Getting bounced by Lehigh, Mercer and South Carolina.

    college is about preparing guys to play at their best and prep players for the next level, there have been some pretty damn good pro basketball players that came out of kentucky in recent years

    They just lost a tough game period. One game from final four, it's not that easy to win NCAA tournament it's one game and ur out. Ppl have off games, if it was a 7 game series it's different. He's not underachieving at all, he's a amazing coach

      Monte Hood absolutely wining a national championship is difficult. And jus cause he only has 1 national championship should not discredit the fact that he has 25+ win seasons every year nd he makes it deep in the tournament most years

      There's only three active coaches who have more than one title. This is beyond a ridiculous claim.

      Msgr. Øystein Nidal Gein why? He makes more money at Kentucky. Just got an extension. He is the king of media. Making all kinds of money on ads. He has a very huge house. He wouldn't go to such a poor state.

      Calipari makes more than all NBA coaches but two. His time with the Nets sucked and he hated it because of the egos and the fact that you get fired in no time.

  • @juandoe7802
    @juandoe7802 Před 7 lety +1

    Just imagine what Roy Williams could do if you has sprinkled in Brandon Ingram in last years team, or any 5 star on this years squad...just 1!!! Calipari has uneracheived in a sense, but UK is always in it and is always a threat... so yes and no.

  • @TheGuardiola122
    @TheGuardiola122 Před 7 lety

    Hell yeah he's under achieving, imagine if Alabama lost every year in the playoffs after having the number one recruiting class every year. But to kentuckys defense all their players leave after one year. If booker and randle and the twins, towns all stayed for more than one year they would win

  • @jackbreh2788
    @jackbreh2788 Před 7 lety +1

    He lost to the overall favorite.... i fail to see the failure here? He X'd the big mouths of UCLA, and lost on a buzzer beater to the best team in the country..

  • @landofthedreadheads8901

    he's not a great coach, he's a great recruiter who knows how to bring already NBA ready players to UK, he can't develop players like a Tom Izzo, or Jim Behiom, or Coach K, he makes bad decisions and this one and done is backfiring right now, yeah they become pros but what's the objective to win titles with your talent, or lose in the tournament and brag on how many 1st round picks you have come through UK, great strategy but as a fan of Big Blue Nation we want more, there will never be another special player like Anthony Davis to come through, Cal should at least 3 titles right now just saying.

    • @Haffmox
      @Haffmox Před 7 lety

      Land of the Dread Heads Yea look at the losing percentage of those coaches. They have been in the league so long is only why they have so many wins. Name one other player besides Draymond green from Michigan state in the NBA.

    • @mr.c1113
      @mr.c1113 Před 7 lety

      HAHA..WHAT? It's backfiring? Six Elite 8's in eight years is backfiring? Four Final Fours and a national title is backfiring? The no. 1 recruiting class next year is a sign of backfiring?
      You all act like the NCAA Tournament is the NBA Playoffs. It's a one and done format where rarely the best team wins. That's why we have South Carolina and Gonzaga in the Final Four right now.
      And I couldn't help but laugh at Izzo and Boeheim developing talent. What a joke. Boeheim is shit. You also act like every guy that came to UK was just lights out and going to be a one and done; Not so. Bledsoe, Ulis, Cauley-Stein, Goodwin, etc were never supposed to be done so early nor were they already "developed." Cal also took Josh Harrellson, a white JUCO scrub who didn't contribute at all until his senior year and got him to the NBA. Did the same with DeAndre Liggins as well.
      2015 is the only time that they straight up dropped the ball as an overwhelming favorite and even then, it took some atrocious officiating in the final two minutes to make that happen. In 2011, 2014 and 2017, Kentucky lost to teams who were ranked above them.

    In the first half Atleast 7 points were stolen. The offensive interference was 2. The over the back was 2. Our three pointer that was way short because we were fouled. Total fouls don't tell the story. The first half was way leaning. Look at the people they called the fouls on for UNC. No one important overall. Top three Kentucky stars were in foul trouble. Willis was called on a bogus loose ball foul. Mays was fouled on the floor in the second half and got an and 1. Kennedy Meeks was fouled on a rebound and was on the ground and got a shooting foul. Willis got 4 fouls quick. Our three point threat. Give me a break with your bs stats. Pinson had 2 fouls early. I am certain they never called another on him. Kentucky was bodies and got arms and hands smack and no foul. UNC missed a shot and it was a foul. GTFO with your hater ass.

    As a Memphian, I can definitely say John Calipari isn't necessarily a good coach; he's a good recruiter. There's a clear difference between the two. He has to top talent every single year and only got it done once (with a Superstar in A.D.).It also sucks that these top recruits either don't play well or never get to play bc he always plays the same 5-7 players.

    • @mr.c1113
      @mr.c1113 Před 7 lety +2

      Okay then explain his success in Memphis and UMass? He had what? One star in Rose on the 2008 squad and then some good role players but not stars in CDR and Dorsey. Then in 2009, he had Evans. Yet he was successful.
      He got UMass to the Final Four in 1996 with Camby being the only NBA player on that roster. Not a good coach? Seriously?

    Should have called a TO after that basket, that "UNC inbounded the ball too fast is BS", he simply forgot he had a TO. As soon as that ball went in, Cal should have been screaming up the floor in the refs faces saying TIMEOUT TIMEOUT TIMEOUT, emphatically making a 'T' shape with his hands. But he didn't....
    In either case, Monk was fouled on that 3 pointer, just plain BS the refs gave Jackson that call twice in the game on way less contact. Kentucky was robbed. Oh well

    • @mr.c1113

      They got it in within one second and if he did call timeout, people would bitch that he allowed them time to set something up. Hindsight is 20/20.
