    Although the DC port wasn't perfect, i still absolutely loved this game at the time (and it's still fun today). using the Sega Official steering wheel with this game was an absolute blast, and i did actually become a bit of a master with it, unfortunately there was no online leader boards like with 355 as i think i might have had some high ranking times to upload!

      Yes it was only done this way so that SEGA could have an easy port to Microsoft Windows platform.
      Which is a good idea on paper, however I don't think they understood how terrible the DirectX port to Dreamcast (on WindowsCE runtime) was going to be.

    This port just goes to show how important the frame rate is. The Dreamcast version was a close match visually, but constantly struggles at less than 30fps compared to the arcade version running at 60fps.
    There's actually a cheat code with the Dreamcast port to run at 60fps (it massively cuts back on detail) but even then it rarely hits the target. Still fun though!

    • @Gilgamex
      @Gilgamex Před 10 měsíci +3

      Windows CE gimped the DC port sadly, the poor performance is largely due to this, too much overhead strain on the hardware. Also, It seems to hit 60 fps fairly regularly, I'd say get rid of all the shit that doesnt matter, I dont care about 2D people in the crowd. I dont think it would need to cut back on much honestly

    • @MH-yp6wg
      @MH-yp6wg Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@Gilgamex Even without the fps-code on DC, which does exactly what you recommend (but still does not hit 60fps constantly), the arcade-version has better draw distance, more detailed polygon models, more details around the track and better textures.
      The fps-code makes the gap even larger.
      So technically, the best way to play this game would be the arcade-version via amulator... but then again, you don't get the extra content of the DC-version.

    I’m not seeing much wrong with the DC port. It’s rep for running poorly is a gross exaggeration.
    The colours _are_ different and less bright. But I’m thinking it’s related to the DC port featuring shadows, not present in the arcade. Also. I think, the more realistic hues are not a mistake but an adaption to the home market, where I think if they retained the original, much brighter colour palette, it would have reflected negatively in the reviews.

    Press Up, A, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, B, Up at the Press Start Button screen to lock framerate to 30fps (a tone confirms correct entry).
    That's different to the 60fps code that reduces visuals and still can't maintain 60fps much more than the vanilla default setting. This makes gameplay 100% stable and perfectly playable with no issues so you can enjoy the substantial additional content over the arcade version.
    Where the arcade has 4 tracks, the home version offers the first three as track themes with 3 courses each, plus two all new themes on top with the same amount of courses for each, plus weather and time of day variations of all of these through the 10 year championship campaign.
    So, while it's a technically challenged port, its gameplay & new content (against Sega's usual barebones efforts) make it more than worthwhile.
    Of course it's also much higher resolution, Model 3 pushed just 62% the pixels (or Dreamcast pushes 161,29% the pixels), so something had to give for such an early port from such completely different architecture and programming methods, given they also added some effects/lighting. That's also part of why imo Daytona USA (2001) is nothing to scoff at next to Daytona USA 2 as that too is higher resolution with flawless performance and draw distance, it just aped the original game more than the sequel in style, theme and even gameplay and did so very successfully, it's ace!

      @MH-yp6wg Před rokem

      LOL Where are you getting your information?
      It is absolutely not 4x as powerful. Both platforms are quite close, actually. It is hard to compare since the architecture of both systems is COMPLETELY different. But I would argue that Model 3, especially in it's later revisions, is even more powerful than DC since it is MROM-based and has VASTLY more RAM, VRAM and bandwidth available.

      @@MH-yp6wg having more RAM doesn’t mean “more powerful.” The base Model 3 isn’t more powerful than the NAOMI architecture which what the Dreamcast is based.

    • @MH-yp6wg
      @MH-yp6wg Před rokem

      @@MrSamPhoenix "More powerful" is not a technical term. It only makes sense here to describe the TOTAL capabilities of a system, including limiting factors like the weakest chain in the link. For example, there is not much use if you theoretically can render X million polygons a second, if you don't have enough RAM to store the necessary data. And RAM/VRAM are THE limiting factors in DC's design, since it limits polygons and textures on the system, which is always a compromise here. Model 3 does not have th make those compromises at all, since it has PLENTY for both.
      Naomi has twice the RAM, twice the VRAM, 4 times the Sound RAM and the advantage of almost zero loading times (even when using GDs) compared to the DC.
      And even when comparing Model 3 with Naomi, I would argue that Model 3 Step two is still more powerful, but it is VERY hard to compare since the big differences in hardware architecture.
      Now I would love to see where you base your claim "DC is 4x as powerful" on. : D

      @@athos5359 Again, different hardware architecture. While the PowerPC beats the SH4 in instructions per second, SH4 does way more floating point calculations (1.4 GFlops), since it is handling geometry as well. On Model 3, this is handled by several geometry coprocessors (which do about 2.8 Gflops on Model Step 2!). On Model 3, you dont have a GPU, but a whole system of processors and dedicated memory working together, which take a hole seperate PCB!
      If you discount that and only take one single component out of this here, I'm sorry, but you don't have any idea what you are talking about.
      If you want a breathtaking example of what Model 3 can do, take LA Machineguns and look at the Las Vegas Stage. Looks better than any DC-game admittedly, as much as I love the DC.
      And Sega themselfes have confirmed M3 to be more powerful, at several occations.
      But DC was no slouch either. Both platforms are still close, it's not like there's a gerneration in between or something. So while M3 Step 2 is more powerful in general, it is not better in every way.
      But in any way, DC ist certainly not 4x as powerful than Model 3... 4x more powerful than Model 2, perhaps. :)

      It's surprising how good the Naomi-ports hold up to the arcade, tho. A few details missing and some textures are lower res, but other than that... I would think Naomi would be further away since it's got double the RAM, double the VRAM and a faster GPU in later revisions... but well. ;)

      @@MH-yp6wg The Model 3 had a very different architecture indeed, that's why ports to the Dreamcast weren't easy to do as they needed heavy reprogramming. The Dreamcast had features the Model 3 didn't have indeed (like some lighting effects we can see in the video), but if we're talking about raw power, the Model 3 was clearly ahead. But with more time, better libraries and more experience with the Dreamcast hardware, we could've had an almost arcade perfect port, I'm sure.
      The Naomi to Dreamcast ports were all impressive indeed. Much easier and faster to do as it's the same architecture, but there was still a gap that I only noticed years later, by watching side-by-side video comparisons (until then, I thought the Naomi arcade board was nothing more that a customized Dreamcast board).

So the arcade was ahead of the home consoles at that time, no doubt... but with DC, the gap became much smaller than the likes of Model 2/System 22 compared to Saturn or PS1.
