  • Exploring the Central Kalahari Game Reserve | Botswana🇧🇼
    The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) in Botswana is one of the last fully self-sufficient destinations to visit. The reserve is massive, stretching over an area of 52 000km² and seriously remote. If you dont bring it, you will not have it and this includes water for washing.
    The reserve can be entered through one of four gates. The Matswere (North East), Tsau (North West), Xade (West) and via the Khutse game reserve in the south. The Matswere gate is by far the easiest to access the reserve from, a short 45km drive from the village of Rakops.
    Camps and sites are scattered all over the reserve with a concentration about 40km inside the Matswere gate. This includes the Deception, Kori, Sunday and Leopard camps. As well the as the Tau Pan lodge and Kalahari Plains camp. The Passarge sites are north west from there and the Letiahau and Piper sites to the south west.
    The road conditions were surprisingly good with the worst being the outside sections needed to access the reserve. I cannot comment on the roads towards Xade and further south of Piper as I did not go to these areas. Also note I visited the reserve during winter which is the dry season.
    The sites are basic with a non-flushing toilet, bucket shower, fire pit and shade. There is no water or any other facilities available in the reserve. As I mentioned, if you dont bring it, you wont have it #Botswana #CKGR #5410Africa

    Wow! Another superb video. At the first camp was sayin "Ground tent in the CKGR?? 😳😳 Then it happened 😁😁😁". Those roads get extremely slippery during the raining season they r almost unusable..

      haha, yeah I'm redoing the canopy so that i can sleep inside it after my experience in CKGR😅 then I'll cut out the ground vs rooftop tent debate. That's what I thought looking at the holes in some places, but I wasn't sure so I didn't want to say it. I'll pin this comment so that others can read. Thanks for watching👍

    I love watching your videos. Very informative. I liked and subscribed to your channel.
    Quick question: do you have any videos of self-driving in CKGR during dry season? Can a 4x4 get stuck during dry season (say July-August) - e.g. in puddle/sand or clay etc?

    • @NickfrNamibia
      @NickfrNamibia  Před 8 měsíci +1

      this was during the dry season. The areas I travelled in wasnt difficult, dont think I ever used 4x4...but things change season to season. Also there are more difficult parts in the park. Wet season Ive been told is a completely different story

    Great video, love the story and all the information. If you look back to the CKGR, do you consider it "dangerous" walking a little bit around a campsite like Piper Pan on daylight? Our should you stay closely at the campsite at the near of the car?

    • @NickfrNamibia
      @NickfrNamibia  Před 16 dny +1

      Dont think it is dangerous. Just be vigilant and probably dont wander too far from camp...The animals will respect you as long as you respect their space

    How are the tyres doing?

    • @NickfrNamibia
      @NickfrNamibia  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching Bob! definitely will keep them coming. Tyres did well in Bots, actually after the visit in CKGR I discovered a small cut on the sidewall of the rear left. Did not loose pressure or anything, but as a precaution I replaced it with the spare which is brand new so carried on without any interruption. Need to take it in for a proper assessment.

    U always travel on your own ? Not worried about being caught out ?

    • @NickfrNamibia
      @NickfrNamibia  Před 3 lety +1

      Used to be a solo backpacker, carried on into overlanding, I think there is always some risk involved, even when in a convoy. I try and plan (maintenance, spare parts, recovery gear, insurance, not going too far off the grid etc) for as many as possible risks and then I also assess situations as I go along. But yes it is something that is always in the back of my head.

    Great video, what kind of fuel range would you need?

    • @NickfrNamibia
      @NickfrNamibia  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Paul. Roughly from Rakops > Matswere > Deception > Piper >Sunday via Passarge >Matswere > Rakops was about 450km. Because it was dry I hardly needed 4x4 which makes a huge diff of course for fuel. I filled up in Rakops, carry 150lt/950km and never worried about fuel...I have since been told that in summer when it rains those roads can become problematic🙂
