    Some impressive sailboats. I always wanted to design and build some foils for my Hobie 16 but never got around to it. Would have been fun. Too old to sail it now. The single hydrofoil PROAs are VERY fast. I saw a scale RC version that runs on a single central hydrofoil with basically what looks like a plane sitting atop the sail for pitch, yaw, and roll control. It was a scale model, but it was nuts. IIRC he was running over 40. Hard to picture without a drawing, but if you saw it you'd immediately understand.
    Going to a rigid sail with a good airfoil design will give a lot more power than a sheet and rib type sail, as well, but a PITA to transport and set up. Great vid!

    • @stardestroyerism
      @stardestroyerism Před 3 lety

      They're relatively similar, a knot (nautical mile per hour) is 1.1 statute (non metric) miles per hour. A nautical mile is not a metric measurement, it's equivalent to 2025 yards, usually shortened to 2000 yards. It's also a 60th of a degree of latitude, which is a 180 to 360th of the Earth's circumference.

      @@stardestroyerism thx bro

    • @christianfournier6862
      @christianfournier6862 Před 3 lety +1

      @Mario_Egea= Sailors are a conservative bunch : they have clung to the 360° Compass Rose.
      If grades were used, the Earth circumference would be :
      400 grades = 40’000 km
      1 grade = 100 km ;
      1/100th of a grade = 1 km ;
      However since degrees are used :
      1 degree = 40’000 / 360 = 111.111 km
      1 minute = 111.111 / 60 = 1.852 km
      Thus one nautical mile (one minute of the Earth circumference) is 1.852 km
      (i.e. about 2 km minus 10%).
      To obtain an approx. value in kmh from knots, multiply by 2 and retrench 10%. Example : 50 kts ~= 90 kmh
      The exact figure is 50 kts x 1.851852 = 92.5926 kmh (~= 93 kmh).
      The 100 kmh “barrier” is at 54 kts.

    Nice to watch, but the title should rather have been something like “Some really fast sailboats”. All speeds given were wrong. Most were wild exaggerations of dreamed up momentary speed peaks. The last one was almost correct, but actually a wee bit too low, and that was the average speed over a mile. Cannot be compared to the other numbers! Another essential point is that Hydroptere and Vestas Sailrocket were the only ones on the list that were ever in possession of a speed record. The latter is still in possession of the outright record, both the 500 meter and the mile. To make the list anywhere near relevant, one at least need to add Crossbow2, Slingshot, the AC75s, the SailGP cats, and of course a lot of windsurfers and kiteboarders.
