From Season 1 Episode 10 ''Histories'': Dr. Foreman believes an uncooperative homeless woman is faking seizures to get a 'meal ticket' at the teaching hospital. But Dr. Wilson grows determined to keep her from falling between the cracks. Her worsening symptoms prove to be a complex mystery, but the mystery of her identity and medical history may hold the answers to saving her life. Just as the team suspects she has contagious meningitis, the woman goes missing, only to be tasered by the police who bring her back. But House deduces that the taser may have proven yet another diagnosis, with dire results.

And you cant test for it without taking a big ol slice of their brain, so you can't catch it before it moves up to the brain and starts showing symptoms...... we vaccinate cats and dogs to protect US btw.. at least in the states. Also! If you ever see a bat in your bedroom while youve been sleeping, go get profolaxis. It’s probably unlikely the bat has rabies, but their bites can be practically invisible, and as stated above RABIES IS A PAINFUL WAY TO DIE WITH LONG SUFFERING. "there were bats"
This seems so insignificant but foreman is realizing that judging her for being homeless was a mistake.
As not only did she have a physical house at one point. But that house had bats which transmit the virus and have such small bites that it is impossible to see if you got bitten unless you watched the bat bite you.
Their bites are the size of a pinpoint. You'd NEVER know and therefore would never think to get shots.
Meaning she got infected while she lived at the house. Not while she was on the street and that the illness took time to devolup. By the time she became homeless... Her chance for vaccination was gone already meaning her homelessness had NOTHING to do with the infection.
Most US rabies cases are caused by bats and not dogs or cats so if you wake up to a bat flying low in your house or room. Assume it bit you and go straight to an ER for shots but do NOT try to capture the bat. Get everyone out of the house if you can. However trying to capture a bat will only increase your likelihood of being bit.

No, you are most likely okay.
First: Do you vaccinate your cat? A vaccinated pet has 0.0001% of even catching the disease, much less spread it. It’s next to impossible.
Second: The *highly typical* incubation period is 2 to 8 weeks, often sooner in instances where the injury is closer to the brain (ear, face, neck, etc.). That 10 year edge case was actually 8 years, when a man was bit by a dog *in Brazil.* He had to travel abroad to get that.
Third: If you are still afraid of exposure, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. The *only* time it’s too late for treatment is when you show clinical symptoms. Rabies is a very obvious disease. You would know if it was too late and won’t be left wondering.
Be proactive and consult your doctor about some pre/post exposure prophylaxis (PEP). It beats the hell out of rabies, anytime.

Rabies is not a 100% mortality rate. There have been a few cases where the patient did manage to survive the rabies virus. Usually most illnesses are relatively harmless to the body at first and it's the bodies immune system that causes the majority of symptoms because an instant and overwhelming response is more likely to ensure no invaders survive. Rabies likes to live in your nervous system and brain which makes it hard for the immune cells to find them. One of the responses is to raise your body temperature so high that it kills the virus but it will also kill the the cells they live in. The only way to these people managed to survive was luck and extreme conditions. They essentially had to suppress their immune system to limit the amount of damage the body does to itself and induce hypothermia to stop the body from cooking itself. And had to be forcibly fed water to ensure they were hydrated over the course of the disease.
It was only about 4-5 recorded survivors

    • @vysharra
      @vysharra Před rokem +1

Yes, it is 100% fatal, the less than 10 total survivors compared to the _60,000_ rabies deaths EACH YEAR is smaller than a statistical rounding error.
Also, “survive” is extremely misleading, as none of those patients who are still alive after their diagnosis are living independently due to massive brain damage. Notably, there is very little evidence that the protocol used is the actual reason they are alive considering the failure rate is FAR higher than the success rate. There is an equally strong argument that each survivor would have woken up regardless, if given life support, due to some genetic or structural abnormality that changes the expression of the virus.
Maybe in the future the 100% fact will be amended, but as for now, without timely treatment the rabies virus is 100% fatal.

That's not exactly true, you can cure and prevent rabies. If you get bitten by an animal it's incredibly important you get a preventative vaccination that will save you. Later in the progression the problem is that the vaccine (more specifically your immune response) won't work before you die. There is a very experimental and only somewhat successful cure called the Milwaukee protocol where a coma is chemically induced. That can slow the damage to your nervous system so your immune response can work before you die.
But even with that your chances aren't great as far as I know it's like a 10% chance. 10% is infinitely more than 0 tho so...

    • @Aceofwolves

The "cure" is a vaccine but once symptoms show that means the brain is being destroyed from the inside and since rabies is a virus and can't be destroyed by medicine... It is fatal. For one, Rabies symptoms are extremely distinct, while it is extremely rare, most doctors would recognize it on sight, and it doesn't drive humans to bite other humans.
For another. Rabies tends to kill the subject within 48 hours of symptom onset, but the incubation period is 4-6 weeks. Foreman would not start showing symptoms until LONG after the patient had already died.

Depends on where you were bitten as it has to travel up the nervous system and nerves are set in the body and don't move or shrink (unlike blood vessels which can change shape). A bite to the leg can take up to a year or more to devolup symptoms. A bite to the neck or face can cause symptoms in a matter of days
Basically the closer you are to the brain. The less space the virus has to travel. Meaning the time window for vaccination is smaller.
While human to human transmission is extremely unlikely as we lack the jaw strength and teeth to push the virus into the muscle of another person...
No time to wait is safe.
