Rescue Me S5E13, Denis Leary, traffic accident

  • John Gavin, played by Denis Leary, is the only one in the fire bregade to have the guts to wrap up the remains of a child killed in a traffic accident.
    He can cope with it, as he lost his only son child some years ago, also when little and also in a traffic accident.
    The way the scene is handled, is touching and the only way how to do such a delicate thing on TV!
    Most impressive.

      I always thought that this scene, was Tommy's final acceptance, and a way to deal with his own sons death when he got run over. He saw his own kid dying, but couldn't help him. Janet always blamed Tommy for that. And Tommy volunteering to pick up those little kid remains, was his way to deal with it, like it was a closure to him. And if you've seen the rest of this clip, others say something like, "How could he do that.." or something like that...

    This focus of the show is shed light on what firefighters face on a daily basis, and how it impacts them. Personally, i think not showing the body and showing the face of Gavin instead (with the rest of the guys standing well away from the kid) is much more effective. Sometimes, it's not what you see, but what you don't see that can make a scene more dramatic.

    @chrisdowns8859 Před rokem +9

    Was an EMT when I was younger. Served on a volunteer squad. ANYTHING, car accident, killing, accidental death, overdose, etc. was terrible, but when it involved a kid, it was triple worse. You do what you do at the scene, then decompress back at the house. Different people did it different ways, but it is always hard. Hug a First Responder whenever you can. The average person knows precious little what these folks see on a daily basis.

    • @mickywanderer8276
      @mickywanderer8276 Před měsícem

      I've worked as a nurse in an ER. Calls about a kid, or worse a baby, is a gut puncher. Given and gotten many a hug from the First Responders. If I knew they had kids I'd ask to give them a hug from me.

    Why are comedians always such solid drama actors?

    • @jimmy2k4o
      @jimmy2k4o Před 2 lety +6

      For comedy and drama you need a good sense of timing, also it’s more impetuous see a comedian do drama than a dramatic actor do drama.

    • @fuzzo73
      @fuzzo73 Před rokem +3

      Because many comedians are a little fucked up to begin with (they'll be the first to tell you that) and it somehow lends itself well to this sort of thing. Robin Williams was another good example. Him and Leary were among the best.

    Outstanding show,and sadly missed now. This scene in particular was fantastic,leading up to this they were all laughing and busting balls,until they see the baby/child off screen and then Tommy goes ahead and cleans it up.....Thats why this show was soo good,you would be pissing yourself laughing 1 second and then brought back toreality in an instant with what that job entails.

    I wanted to be a fireman worse than anything growing up like my father. I wanted to ride in the truck with the lights and sirens going,I wanted to spray water on the fire, and I wasn’t Afraid of going into a burning building. I thought,I’m set.Then as I got of age and my father knew my intentions, he sat me down and told me about the other part of the job. The part he didn’t bring home. Needless to say the job wasn’t gonna be for me. It takes a special kind of person, almost a robot.

    Not showing the child and instead focusing on the responders……thank you. People don’t realise that this happens a lot and can mess folk up. Happened on my shift back in the late 90s….parents driving home from hospital to their home in our rural area of Scotland. Mum is in the back and the newborn baby was in her arms and not in a car seat. Their vehicle had a head-on collision with another vehicle and it was dark at the time. Mum wasn’t strapped in either. She and the baby were thrown from the car….mum died on impact with the road. Nobody knew there was a baby until a young woman from another car caught up behind the immediate crash walked to find a house with a phone, (to call 999). She found the baby as she walked along the road….dead, again straight away from the trauma of being ejected through the windscreen onto the road. The dad was seriously injured and was unconscious - he didn’t find out about his wife and child until he was well enough to be brought out of his induced coma. The driver of the other car was not too badly injured but was fucked-up mentally for a good while. The young lady who found the baby was a mess for a long time….,she moved out of the area as it was too much for her.
