STEVE: Love your videos and your knowledge about everything!
Per the Kidde CO Detector user manual: "Ten (10) years after the unit was installed, this unit will automatically alert you that it is time to replace the unit.
This is called “End of Unit Life” mode. See Troubleshooting Guide." The Troubleshooting Guide lists "2 beeps every 60 seconds" as the end of life alert. As soon as I saw that this was literally 10 years after you installed the unit, I figured that's what was up with the alarm. I also recognized the chirping. That's not an alarm, that's an end of life signal. I know this because I had a client whose house was filled with beeping detectors -- all over the house. I don't know how they could stand it. They couldn't understand why when they changed the batteries, the detectors still beeped.

I can confirm, had that exact model, after 10 years did the same thing, it's because the sensor has a limited lifespan and they don't want somebody to die because the sensor failed and did not alert to a CO problem.

Reminds me of our local record store. Silly smoke/co2 detector with the low battery warning. I offered to bring him a new 9v battery to shut it up. Came in a month later and it's pealed off the ceiling with the battery leads hanging loose.
Can't fix stupid. Much as I like the guy and the store- Smoke alarms do save lives- And he's got a vintage store full of vintage plastic, tapes, records....That would be a hot mess with toxic fumes.

I think those Carbon Dioxide Detectors are supposed to be replaced every 10 years. A person that I watch with a Camper just had to change theirs. It was 10 years old.

All of the alarms I have say they will start beeping 10 years after you first power it on. (hard wired and battery only)

All co detectors have a life span. Even battery operated ones. Having a single hardwired detector is al most pointless. Only makes sense if you have interconnected detectors.

  • @vikingdm
    @vikingdm Před 6 měsíci +1

CO and Smoke detectors are supposed to be replaced every 7-10 years. Manufacturers have added end of life alarms as people would fail to change them at the end of life. The detectors become less sensitive over time. In our state, they only allow hardwired or ones with 10 year batteries as they found people would fail to change the batteries and just take the batteries out when it started to chirp.

That's a great idea, since I can buy either vinegar or bleach from Sam's Club in bulk. Plus, I can get a couple of those paper funnels from the gasoline station. I believe those carbon monoxide detectors are good for 10 years. I can't smell or taste, so it's a matter of life and death, that I have a carbon monoxide detector.

"After ten (10) years of cumulative power up, this unit will “chirp” two times every 30 seconds. This is an “operational end of life” feature which will indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. To help identify the date to replace the unit, a label has been affixed to the side of the alarm." This is Kidde's manual on their CO detectors.

Most detectors have a 10 year life span and will beep to let you know it’s replacement time…that’s also why you write the date on them 🤷‍♂️
However, this old Co detector has 3 wires: Hot, neutral, and communication. It was to communicate with all the other alarms in the house if it went off. Now, she has lost that communication with that new battery powered unit. I know that unit because I have the same model…

The truth is most CO detectors lack a DIGITAL DISPLAY readout. To avoid nuisance alarms, they will alert only when CO levels pose a deadly risk- not at lower levels. It's best to use a detector with a digital display so you can have more information to troubleshoot any beeping and alarms.
Although 70 ppm is the upper normal limit for continued CO exposure, the UL requires detectors to alarm within 90 minutes when exposed to 100 ppm; 35 minutes when exposed to 200 ppm, and 15 minutes when exposed to 400 ppm.
When a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, it indicates the presence of carbon monoxide- which can be fatal. Never ignore the sound of an alarm. Leave the home immediately and call 911.
The health effects of CO depend on the CO concentration and length of exposure, as well as each individual's health condition.
Concentration is measured in parts per million (ppm). Most people will not experience any symptoms from prolonged exposure
to CO levels of approximately 1 to 70 ppm, but some heart patients might experience an increase in chest pain.

No All CO detectors have to be junked after 10 years. Some even earlier. There is always an expiration date on the back of the detector. A fresh battery will not extend the life of the CO element.
