plugin boutique has a crossgrade to the UA set of LA-2A for I think $29 if you have this free one and a bundle upgrade of 11 plugins for $49. So, basically if you want the full paid versions, they're at a pretty good price now. Used this free one yesterday and it's quite nice. Thinking of grabbing the sale as well. Too many compressors? Never.!

UA LA-2A TUBE FREE Plug-In is so much better i feel that the Legacy. This New FREE Plug-In give you also GUI Size adjustability & comes with "Preset"for Vocals. Keys, Guitar, Drums & Bass if your into that but RESIZING it helps us older Engineers on our eyes :) UA's Great company for them to gives this to all of us! I saw 4 ads about products. While watching a video about a product.
This the type of world we be living in.
I use a Summit Audio TLA-50 (hardware, not plugin), which as I understand it, is modeled on the LA-2A. It is a very, very nice leveling amp that I insert on the vocal channel while mixing live sound at an open mic I host. Couldn't be easier to use and it pays off big time in the overall sound.

Great. I've just download it for free. It seems to have a very 60s sound, creamy and transparent, as you said. I guess I can use it even in some country rock ballads. I will try it as soon as I can. Anyway I always appreciate what is simple to use. 😂

Thanks Chris! I picked up the free LA-2A from UAD yesterday and then I went and grabbed the Teletronix collection since the price was finally right at Plugin Boutique. The 2A really works great on vocals and I plan to do the whole serial compression thing with an 1176 pretty soon too.
Really quick: the UAD Essentials Edition is $49 right now through Plugin Boutique if you get this free LA-2A through them too. It's a "crossgrade" so you'd have to activate the free plugin first before activating the rest of the bundle. It's an incredible deal and that allowed me to grab the different versions of the LA-2A in that suite too (and getting $149 worth of Teletronix for $49 alone was totally worth it, let alone the $299 for Essentials itself).

Have been working with the waves CLA-2 forever, but also sometimes the IK Multimedia T-Racks white face... the only thing that can catch out the beginner with the waves one is that it switches on Analog noise (60Hz) which can bring up the noise floor dramatically.
The IK Multimedia is a good emulation also, I like that one too

One big difference with the paid version - lack of the high frequency side chain :) aka emphasis control.
Many pro users know how important it is in some situations.

Try some emphasis / de-emphasis eq before and after the unit. It acts the same way as a sidechain filter ;)
@@SandPineAudio Yeah, but than with additional coloring or artifacts caused by the eq's you're using.
@@TheAris621 Absolutly no coloring with a transparent eq (no harmonics) and both filters and phase response cancel each other if it has the exact same reverse parameters. You only affect the way compressor (or whatever unit in between) react to the sound.

Should I upgrade to full LA-2A collection ? I already have Pultec ,Voxbox,175b and 176, Fairchild collection,api2500,API vision etc.? Are you using grey more then silver ?
Is this usable in Reason? I downloaded it with UA Connect and iLok, but not sure how to move forward

I have this UA version of LA-2A, but haven't downloaded. I've used the Waves CLA-2A.
Funny how the ears work, the LA-2A I heard in recordings was likely paired with the 1176, and that is how I like doing it myself, 1176 into LA-2A. I'm not after much gain reduction as much as that sound.
PS I've got it loaded in and doing its job very well. Yep! There's that awesome LA-2A sound.

Hi Chris, is this free LA2A different than the silver version LA2A that is part of the LA2A bundle ? I have messaged UAD, they said they both are not the same but when I asked them again to confirm again, they did not respond. Could you please help me clear the confusion please.

Hi there, if you have the UA Desktop application installed. You’ll notice this free plugin is listed separately there as a tube compressor from the Teletronix Leveler collection.
I am certainly no expert by any means and totally brand new to the UA platform. But, that would mean it is different from the rest of the LA-2A’s. They each sound different to me. I just used this particular one on my Martin acoustic and some vocals for a pop rock song and it sounded pretty amazing.
I love this compressor for drums - I’m sure I’m using it wrong, I almost use it as distortion. But it sounds fucking great.
When it sounds amazing, you're using it right, whether it's in a conventional way or not. 🔥🔥🔥

I wish some of these LA2A plugins would add an output level control - if you drive push the gain the level can quickly get way high.
The Gain knob is actually the Output level, after compression

Funny I watched many comparison video’s and in all videos the UA came out not so great. Heard comparisons with hardware and all type of plugins. The Waves came out great out of all tests, but most people don’t like that company anymore.
By the way we always hear the LA2A on vocals and guitar but it’s actually awesome on snares try it out, sounds killer 😊

Makes sense as compressors on drums tend to want to be slower (ie. longer attack, of course) and this would be good to preserve transients which some folks set to 10-16ms for drums. Whether toms or snares or kick, seems like it would make sense to try it out.

I saw several comparisons where the CL2A was closer to the original. In regard of the harmonics, the gain settings and vu response.

The hoops you have to jump through to get this free plug-in. Is it worth it? Genuinely wondering. I went most of the way, but stopped at having to install the UA Connect. I am not a UAD hardware user, and likely never will be. I have the Overloud version of the LA2A (and maybe some others similar, like SoftTube). So... is this plugin anything special?
The UA Connect is to activate and install Native Based UAD Plugins, so no hardware needed. It's free, so yes, it's worth it :-)
I completely disagree with you about it being free so it's worth it. Giving out your personal information to both Plug-in boutique and UA , and now being spammed with plug-in boutique all for what? I was more asking if the LA2A plugin was worth the hassle based on the merit that it might be an exceptional plug-in or just another LA2A emulation in exchange for your info for marketing. I have others that do the trick (maybe?) but I've never used a real LA-2A to compare. I'm very interested in Neold's version based on what I have seen online so far.@@mixdownonline

Probably not the preferred choice for mastering engineers, I know I don't use an LA-2A when mastering.

No, it's not the legacy version. It's the full version, ported to run on native hardware (not UAD dsp).
I'm not sure about that. They have a bundle with the grey, silver, and 2A versions, which all have their own character. This appears to be the clean/no saturation version of the silver. You could be right but I'm not in my studio to check plugin doctor @@Leo.Brodie

No, it is the silver MKII with the legacy GUI.
So I guess we can summarize this compressor and a "smooth" compressor.
Smooth, slow compressoy, pretty much, yes
How does it compare to the box? Seriously. Does it have the magic?
The Magic for me is the way it reacts to a signal, and the tone which is unique to the LA2A, and that is comparable to the model it was modeled after. It's one of the best plugin versions out there. Of course, even if it's very close, it will not be 100% the same, and that's normal, and ok. Most people wouldn't probably even notice the difference, but some of us might, and that doesn't mean one is better than the other, if that's the case...just slightly different within the same ball park. If I had one with me, I would make a comparison video, but the question is, is the difference between the 2 is worth a difference of $4500? There's no right or wrong answer to this question, just a personnal preference. But can't go wrong with FREE, as far as I'm concerned :-)
@@mixdownonline I guess even the boxes aren't the same as eachother due to analogue-ness! Transistors built to a standard with tolerances and margins for specs mean everything has slight variation.
I have heard of old engineers having their favourite box in a studio of identical models because it had a different sound.

It's worth 5k as far as the market goes, but would I spend 5k for an original? For a mixing tool only, absolutely NOT...But as an investment? Maybe, since that thing might be worth way more in the future. But even then, I don't think my wife would appreciate 😅

It's a free demo, not a free plugin. It is asking me to start a free demo. UPDATE: if you hit refresh on the UAD installer, it switches from Demo to Activate. Very buggy.

Thanks for your video, I tried to get the plugin for free. Unfortunately it is so complicated that I abandoned the attempt. You have to create an account on several sites, enter your ALL data, confirm several mails to get the key - THEN - you have to install several programs to download the plugin at all. NOPE - That's cheating, my data is worth more, I just download it via alternative sites and done. This is way too complicated and the price - is anything but free -.
I don’t know. I have spent what seems like an hour on the free plug-in merry go round and it seems like they just want more and more info and that ridiculous captcha crap is a waste of time. Then I see it is not what they say it is. They want you to upgrade to the real plug-in for 29 bucks. Tia is a scam. I’m fine without it.

It is Free, and the UAD installer software is definitely not Spyware. Lots of plug-in companies have installer software systems, nothing new here.
It doesn't spy.its a portal sort of speak to download and have copyright protection.i checked in the task bar as well. It's at 0 percent all the time in the background unless you launch it again to download a different plugin you purchase.
i hear no difference. Only hear when peak reduction is increased dramatically. But in that case the sound if fkd up.

Good tutorial. My question is: where would you use it? By this I mean if we mimicked real world use, would one compress each track individually and bounce each time to free it up for the next track; use multiple units on multiple tracks or busses; or as one buss that serves multiple tracks at once (which I assume would be a very bad idea)?
