We listened to this in my composition class with his son many years ago, it is really an amazing piece. RIP George Crumb, and thank you for being one of the first contemporary music experiences and one of the composers that made me fall in love with contemporary music.
I went to the first performance at the Proms in 1977 I was 17 in the Albert Hall it was stunning
Who was the conductor in that performance? Was it Boulez?
I wish I was there.
I was there too. I think it was UK premiere at the Proms in 1979, with four conductors! Thought it was an amazing spectacle, loved the spatial percussion. UK critics really slated it though. Would love to hear it again live
Thanks George for teaching so many of us to fall in love with the mysterious alchemy of music -- your absence is felt and your presence missed.
Here here!
upon landing on a very far away planet one realizes that there is no escape. this music is played on a loop on loudspeakers everywhere 24/7.
So beautiful...
this is so heavy yet so balanced! love it
What a marvelous score. I do love Crumb's music so!
Uma obra fantástica e maravilhosa do repertório contemporâneo. Crumb é sempre surpreendente!!!!
This piece is so powerful... R.I.P george crumb
Undoubtedly George Crumb's masterpiece!
Amazing.
I remember seeing this live in Kansas City, with Maurice Peress leading the Kansas City Philharmonic. Great music!

Wow!!!
brilliant piece! complex reminders of musical thoughts
wow!
Some of the opening string passages of polytonality and modes remind me of Charles Koechlin. beautiful
+vincent stuart I get that too, for c. 45 seconds from about 1:30.
+Ian Jenkins
Charles Ives- Central Park In The Dark.
+6MickTravis9 Yep - that too.
I hear more Bartok - 2nd piano concerto second movement - it's almost a quote.
Amazing!!
Sehr schöner Schluss.
cool
GRAMMY 2001!!!
I have this CD. I love it.
Was this inspired by the comet Kohoutek, by any chance? I remember Kraftwerk released a neat piece about it a little before this.
15:07 nice undesired quote of sherazade XD
6:10 how are those sounds made!!!???
Released in full blast Punk, is this good enough? Yes, I suppose ;-)
Bartok piano concerto 2- 2nd movement
and Ive's Central Park in the dark
you are right
the start it's the same same string structure of charles ives- the ununserwed question
actually, central park in the dark.
we are both are wrong. it's the second movement from bartok piano concerto no 2
you're all right
Does anyone know what constellation is highlighted in the thumbnail?
Charles Ives “ unanswered question” en el 1:32
Santiago Quinto Serna, compositor y director. Y también, “Central Park in the Dark”. Crumb dice que la música de Ives es de sus influencias signíficas.

Fängt schlechter an, als ,,haunted Landscape''' ist. Will aber noch nichts heißen.
Hm, wird schließlich etwas blöder und lustiger. Na, ich bin gespannt. Voll lustig.
Jetzt wird auch noch gesungen. Sehr gut. Ein Duett mit dem Tier. Kriegt auf alle Fälle ein Like.
Gefällt mir allweil besser. Twist and Shout! Sehr schöne Trostlosigkeit. Muss nicht unbedingt besser gesungen werden, was eh' nicht so leicht sein dürfte.

6:07-6:27 I can't tell if this is funny or if this is nightmare fuel
Well, it ain’t funny.
Solch hübschen Grusel muss man erst mal hinkriegen. Das ist echt schwer. Und man kriegt dafür relativ wenig. Immerhin
setzt er ein paar erfrischend düstere Akzente in die Welt der Auf- und Nieder hüpfenden Inkarnationen des Lobpreises des Herrn.

Was he drunk when he composed this?
I assume you know absolutely nothing about Crumb's music
