I don't think the Amazon Ringworms of Power show was supposed to be about the Silmarillion. If I remember correctly, they only had the rights to the appendices from the Lord of the Rings which is pretty slim pickings for a complete narrative. So they came up with a bunch of crap to fill in the gaps in the Second (and First) Age which alludes to stuff that happened in the Silmarillion and other writings but has enough fanfiction shit to prevent them from getting sued.
PS: One of the bozos on Twitter talking about being disappointed by the Silmarillion is Neil Gaiman of Sandman fame.

To touch on a few points:
1-3PO, I'm well aware that was what you were implying in your video. After years of being gas-lit from these hacks saying stuff like “oh, we're totally fans of [insert intellectual property here],” someone on their side finally admitted the quiet part out loud. Naturally, I did what any reasonable person would do in this scenario: blast this admission of guilt from a rooftop with a megaphone, like a lunatic.
2-I find that normies are extremely superficial with regards to taste. The product can be made with the contents of a porta-potty but they'll gladly slurp it down, as long as its got a nice wrapping with a bow on it.
3-Admittedly, in addition to Tolkien's works, I am a fan of the LotR trilogy Jackson made; not so much the Hobbit though. I thought it was an over-bloated, with unnecessary CGI. A re-cut of the Hobbit trilogy into a dualogy has only vindicated my original take on that series.

  • @mr.miscellaneous9144
    @mr.miscellaneous9144 Před rokem +92

I just finished the og trilogy last night, and EVEN today, it's still one of, if not the greatest cinematic masterpiece in history. There was never a moment I hated, the lighthearted moments of jokes were never overdone, and played well with the dark and much more serious tone the rest of the movies had. All of the characters felt welcoming and fleshed out, even the ones who had minimal time to shine. The bittersweet ending that still draws tears to my eyes... It's never boring to rematch this trilogy... It's a huge shame to see what these people of today are doing to such an amazing piece of art.

Which is why you have that one rohirrim charging like he is about to single handedly kill every orc!
In the first movie, when the uruk hai threw the dagger at aragorn, it was a real dagger and was supposed to go to the side of him and be edited later, but he messed up the throw and threw it straight at aragorn, who deflected it perfectly

I read the Silmarillion right after LotR, when I was 16. To say that I was overwhelmed was putting it mildly. It was also pretty much not at all what I expected after the LotR's nicely flowing story. I still read it though, not getting most of the first few chapters, and when I was done with the book, I read it again to get what's going on. It is not an easy read by far, however, it is rewarding.

This shilling blitz reminds me of the old advertising story about the slumping sales of dog food.
Ad executives were at a meeting discussing how they needed to improve slumping dog food sales. One exec suggested the packaging be changed, maybe more vibrant colors. Another suggested a funny ad campaign geared towards owners. Another suggested going all out on celebrity endorsements. Finally, one lowly guy at the end of the table from research sheepishly raises his hand. The VP of advertising asked "do you have something to add?" The guy from research in a low, shaky voice said "I think I know why sales are down". The VP chortled a bit, expecting to hear one more suggestion that was not his own and would quickly bat away and he said "what is it?!" The man from research said in a tone deaf voice "the dogs won't eat it".

Of course they don't give any context, do they. And Gaiman especially definitely knows better. The Silmarillion isn't a novel and wasn't written by JRR Tolkien. It was put together from his notes by his son. And even if Tolkien had fully constructed it himself, not just the ideas in it, it still wouldn't be valid to compare it to LOTR or The Hobbit. It's more a collection of related short stories. So of course many turn to it after the novels and don't like it as much or only in a different way. After 40 years of reading books from the legendarium, though, The Silmarillion is my favourite. Not because of artful construction or a contiguous story (though both are better done there than in many other authors' works) but because it reveals the depth of worldbuilding and thought that went into LOTR and The Hobbit. The man conceived of over 10,000 years of history preceding the novels. Developed cultures and characters that got passing references at most in the novels. Genius and astonishing dedication. It made his world rich and helps to explain why so many millions love it. Looks like much of that has been thrown out in favour of whatever was developed from an afternoon in the writers' room. We'll soon see how the two approaches compare...

The Silmarillion can best be described as a history of middle-earth. It is Christopher's compilation of all the notes Tolkien himself made when preparing to write a potential additional story in the LotR universe. While Tolkien died before he could publish anything himself, his son respected his work enough to release it in as raw a form as possible while still maintaining a coherent record of the events. For this reason it reads like a history rather than a story. One might expect the in-universe histories to read like this, as if a character in one of the main-line stories would find an excerpt from the Silmarillion and read only parts that were relevant to his situation.

This is the Simarillion and it's beautiful as well as prophetic. Read it and take heart.
And it seemed at last that there were two musics progressing at one
time before the seat of Ilúvatar, and they were utterly at variance. The one was
deep and wide and beautiful, but slow and blended with an immeasurable
sorrow, from which its beauty chiefly came. The other had now achieved a unity
of its own; but it was loud, and vain, and endlessly repeated; and it had little
harmony, but rather a clamorous unison as of many trumpets braying upon a few
notes. And it essayed to drown the other music by the violence of its voice, but it
seemed that its most triumphant notes were taken by the other and woven into its
    own solemn pattern.
In the midst of this strife, whereat the halls of Ilúvatar shook and a tremor ran
out into the silences yet unmoved, Ilúvatar arose a third time, and his face was
terrible to behold. Then he raised up both his hands, and in one chord, deeper
than the Abyss, higher than the Firmament, piercing as the light of the eye of
    Ilúvatar, the Music ceased.

It might be a hard read, but people these days are used to the floppy writing of generic fantasy authors and therefore define it as unreadable and wayyy too hard. Everything that's slightly challenging will be hard when your brain is used to avarage or bad content and isn't trained or challenged at all for days and days on end, do shit with your lives, people.
I have ADHD and yet I am able to remember Finwe's entire family tree (with a couple of names missing from Finarfin's side i'll admit lol) the 14 Valar (or 15 ig), most Sindarin elves that get mentioned and in general a lot of events and characters, i kinda struggle with places tho. Usually i don't remember this much about any other book but for some reason the "unreadable" book is what stuck with me the most.
Those twitter posts made me actually lose it, you can't pretend to talk shit about a beutiful, complex book written by one of the best athours in all of fiction's history and have no one say anything about it, not our fault if those brain dead, sold, woke people can't understand anything about it.
I'm not saying you can't dislike the book/find it hard to read, of course you can, but what made me mad is that those people were trying to put shade over the Silmarillion in an attempt to make Rings of Power shine, and trust me that show pales in comparison to any book that has the name Tolkien written on it's cover.

Yes, the Silmarillion is challenging. I only read it recently and it is radically different from the Hobbit and LotR. To paraphrase Neil himself (when he wrote about Lord Dunsany), it's like a strong red wine and if you're used to drinking cola then you might not like it.
The Silmarillion asks a lot of the reader. It's for people who read things like Icelandic Sagas and the King James Bible. It rewards attention, reflection and a view of the world that values transcendence and accepts grief.

Amazon watched the reactions of the fandoms of Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, The Witcher, Wheel of Time, James Bond, the Marvel and DC universes - and they had their canned responses and actions primed and prepped. But they were hit by a black swan: the global outrage of Tolkien fandom.

  • @gravewalkers

Take the topic seriously: IS TOLKIEN'S WRITING BAD? What does this even mean?
As a writer, and as a writer who did write something in the Tolkien style, what does this mean?
Amazon's writers are modern no talent writers. They are not gifted people. They are people 'educated in writing' by other liberals.
This means, the 'style'. Most of you know this style, even if you didn't realize it. Since they are bad writers, they usually fail at their own style.
SHOW DO NOT TELL. Tropes like that.
    What did Tolkien write?
Much of Tolkien's work - as shown by Bilbo and his red book.
    Was Bilbo a novelist?
    Did Bilbo write screenplays?
Bilbo wrote HISTORY and COMMENTARY on history.
So, comparing this new show to Tolkien? Obviously, they are CONVERTING Tolkien into their style.
Tolkien spread his story ACROSS AGES!
Centuries can pass between one interesting thing and the next.
This makes great history, but when they want to film it? It is not their style.
Their style is... every character in the universe meeting on the same stage at the same time.
Did Tolkien write in the common modern style? He did not.
Tolkien was Bilbo. He is writing synoptic history.
    Right?
Most of his work is not in the moment to moment novel style.
    He pulls back from that.
The Fellowship of the Ring was a time when the characters were in ONE PLACE at the SAME TIME, and you can tell the hourly goings on.
What did they buy the rights to?
    They bought SYNOPTIC HISTORICAL OVERVIEWS.
When they say... his writing style is mostly useless to them? It is.
It is mostly useless to us too, if we want to sell it.
You can't really sell synoptic stories easily, even though we actually love them. That is an industry issue.
World War Z comes to mind.
The books are in a Tolkien style while the movie just steals the name and is in their modern style.
Saying Tolkien is a bad writer is not true. Saying he did not write MOSTLY in the modern style is definitely true.

As a history buff I immediately understood the point you were making and I appreciate the nuances you brought into your articulation. It's the difference between reading for example a novel like The Killer Angels vs. reading actual historical accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg. Unfortunately I'm not sure it's a point that would readily be understood by the show runners or in fact one they care about.

How the showrunners (ie writers and creators) have worded it is: _"we had to _*_write the novel Tolkien never wrote_*_ and make it into a mega-event TV series"_ - the reason for this is they wanted to set it in the Second Age, but don't have the rights to Tolkien's actual Second Age novels (Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales) so they used Second Age events from the appendices - which are literally just like one sentence in a chronological timeline - and invented their own original stories to _replace_ the stories Tolkien wrote.
So in short - this is a fanfic at best, but it's not even written by fans. They chose to write their own stories to _replace_ the stories Tolkien wrote, rather than adapting any of the material they actually have the rights to!!

Ill agree that silmarillion is not that great a read, not if your looking for a story..
But it is for the people who loves Tolkins work, his world and wants to know more. It is small bits and pieces that explains what happend throughout time.. If you expect it to be a great story, you have failed to read a little about what it is.

I've TRIED to read it all my life. It's not a novel, it's a history book, and the first 30 pages are nothing but singing elves.

It's not supposed to be a story, it's a conpendium of Tolkien notes that his son put together after his death, it was supposed to be notes for other future writers so they could make those books all approved by him and under the "written by Bilbo Baggins" theme for all of them.

The really interrestting thing is: I am following, as a life l;ong Tolkien fan, Amazons marketing strategy, for quite a while already and it's amazing, how they always come up with new sh_t, just to hide that their show is crap.
We say: They take to many liberties with the lore
Amazon answers: Oh the PJ movies bastardised Tolkien as well.
We say: PJ had the rights for the books, Amazon has sh_t all for Silmarillion or BouT
Amazon now says: Silmarillion is sh_t anyway, we do it better.
So whatever critisism they pick up from the comments in the web, they develop a conter lie trying to hide the flaws.
The only point from us fans, where i've not seen any reply from amazon yet is: Where is Celeborn, Galadriels husband that gave her her name "Galadriel"'.
If he doesn't appear in the show, then they have to admit, that they are not true to Tolkien.
    Anyway, nice video. Thanks !

Every Twitter post has the words “epic, scale, scope, masterpiece, and CINEMATIC!”, hilarious.
The Silmarillion is the history of Middle Earth in much the same style that many real world religious books tell the history of their god/gods and their society. Think of it as a bible for Middle Earth.

If you can get past the first few chapters of the Silmarillion, there are some great stories in there. Its the naming of the Valar, and who they're married to will put you to sleep. It reads more like a history book than a piece of literature because essentially thats what it is. But if you sit and think about it, that is Tolkien's whole life written down in that book. He was a genius, and this show is going to bastardize his characters, which he wouldn't appreciate at all. Galadriel was never written as some warrior princess with sword and armor, and thats just the beginning of whats wrong. It reeks of giant Smaug doo-doo.
