  • Welcome to Dagestan, Russia's southernmost republic and one of the most diverse and interesting regions on Earth. Dagestan, a mostly Muslim region in the south of Russia on the northwest coast of the Caspian Sea, is known for the stark beauty of its mountain landscapes, for its many small ethnic groups and the big hearts of the people. We are exploring the beautiful and often misunderstood, Dagestan for the next 10 days or so, from the Caspian Sea coast to the oldest city in Russia!
But we are going to start up in the region of Chokh, in the remote Caucasus mountains - and specifically the abandoned village of Gamsutl, also known as the Machu Picchu of Russia! 🇷🇺

Dagestan, what a great tour Matt and Julia. The landscape, terrain and the architecture of the old deserted villages - all very similar to where I was based for sometime in Taif, Saudi Arabia in the beautiful Hijaz mountains. Many thanks to you both

I'm sure I saw persimmons early in the video... 😀Dodgy roads? Indeed! 🤦‍♂ But the views of the Dagestan mountain wilderness takes one's breath away! Beautiful! That "long drop" toilet? I'd rather choose the open field. Gamsutl is absolutely a fairy tale village with stunning views. All the scenery in this video almost feels prehistoric. Why is that footbridge (on the way back from the waterfall) locked down? Thanks for this video, really wonderful content by a wonderful couple! ❤

At first I thought it was an area that had been strip mined! They have to be some tough people to be able to live and thrive there.

Fascinating place - however at 12:16 ...... I've noticed quite a few well-known travel CZcamsrs (mentioning no names, but including a very well known one who has visits Russia, plus a few others who go all over the world) ...... they DON'T seem to have a decent pair of walking boots or even "lightweight" i.e. ankle height walking shoes. Plenty of good brands to choose from, but avoid Magnum boots and Adidas GSG shoes/boots - the soles on them don't last.

What a beautiful place to visit, I love the traditions of how the tea is poured, the food looks amazing to.
On thing I get a big giggle out of when is a Lada car, I had a boss who owned one, he made me drive it on occasion. I used to tell him it was Russian Tank in disguise so when Russia was going to invade they already had their tanks here.
You have to know it was in the “Cold War years back then) so things were so very different. We even used to have air raid sirens that would go off as a test.
We were instructed to get into a tucked position under our school desks when the sirens would sound off, in reality they should have let us run around for 20 mins in reality, if the missiles where coming ( it would have been our last 20 minutes or so alive) I still think they should have taught us to kiss our asses goodbye instead lmao.
    Thankfully this never happened.
