I've always settled for using whichever shotgun came off the rack with an acceptable price tag. This resulted in waves of streaky shooting over the years that I became increasingly frustrated with so I set out to try and become a more consistent wing shooter. This new focus eventually led me to building a custom shotgun from Upland Gun Company earlier this year. If you're going to have a custom gun built then it better be built to the correct dimensions right? This is where I linked up with Dell Whitman of DC Whitman Custom Gunsmithing at The Sawbriar Hunting Preserve in Allardt, TN this past spring.
Dell was kind enough to walk me through the entire process explaining every step in detail. It was a unique experience that proved my suspicions over the years that I've never once fired a shotgun that was actually the correct size for me. As you'll see in the video, Dell was full of information beyond just taking measurements for me as he also provided quite a bit of useful technique and basic form instruction throughout the process. Talking with Dell, I learned theres actually not a shotgun being produced that would come stock off the rack with the correct length of pull for my size. Thats just one dimension too! There are other dimensions just as important that ensures a proper gun mount when you need it most.
Once the fitting was done I had the exact measurements and dimensions for Upland Gun Company to construct the new gun off of. Pretty soon there wont be anymore excuses for inconsistent shooting and missed opportunities once the new shotgun arrives!

Enjoyed this video. I just need someone to explain to the birds to not flush while I'm on a slope, on a rock, stepping over/under or around a tree. I also need the trees to get the hell out of the way of my barrels and shot! lol. If I were buying a new Upland Gun that offered gun fitting I would go for it because I see the value. Sadly I enjoy 100 year old Parkers and Foxes but figure one day I'll pick up an Upland Gun Company gun. Happy Hunting!
