9:03 In the original animated series it was revealed that they knew Aang was the Avatar because when he was much younger he was given a choice of hundreds of items to choose as toys and the four items he chose were relics of previous Avatars.

That’s also how real life monks do their reincarnation tests irl. For example, the Dalai Lama also had that tests. That’s the reason why we got that tests in avatar to begin with.

Zuko is probably my favorite portrayal so far, he’s doing his thing. Sokka as well. Iroh is iffy. The bending is actually GREAT, live action always looked weird and awkward to me but it’s looks damn good. Air nation attack was probably the best addition for me rn. Felt scary and menacing
I feel bad because Paul is doing a good job, but I keep hearing Carson Teva. I know it's a me problem, and I hope I can overcome it to more enjoy his portrayal

yesss I watch all episodesss and i could tell ZUKO IS FIREEEE, zuko was the one that people judge him on the trailer but all i can say safter watch all episodess ZUKO IS MY TOP BEST POTRAYAL FROM THE SERIES EVEN BETTER, after that, Lord Ozai, Uncle iroh, Sozin, and the Leiutenant Jee
I agree everything else looks amazing. Iroh’s actor isn’t tapping into his almost laidback and humorous personality. Iroh literally gives cool uncle and I don’t think the actor is pulling through with that.
The air temple raid scene was amazingly well done and Zuko is almost exactly like himself in the original so far, which I love. Overall, not too bad so far. Way better than the movie anyway.

I mean that's literally what happened in the animated show after he was out from the iceberg
so according to a CZcamsr (the sword and pen reflections) who talked to the executives and show runners at the premiere party, they did a screen test of ep 1 and found that the heavy exposition was only a problem for people who already watched the animated series, while new audience really struggled with the concepts and lores of this world without these expositions. They were really debating whether to overload the 1st ep like this but I think if the ultimate goal is to get new fan into the show and hook them right from the beginning, I can see why they chose this. Would be interesting to see the reaction of people who had not watched the original series.
I just can’t agree here; the best shows make you question what’s going on and really think about what they’re showing you and how it might be connected to a greater plot. Show don’t tell is a huge issue for me right now with this

People underestimate the amount of exposition in the entire cartoon. It was for 7 yesr olds. It had more than the Netflix show. The exposition is very minimal in the rest of the show compared to the pilot episode.
I like how Gyatso says you'll always be my friend because he was friends with Roku as well.

I wish instead of Sozin killing Gyatso I wish Netflix would’ve entertained the Theory that a lot of Avatarist’s have been saying on their Channel that Monk Gyatso killed all of the FireBenders and himself by taking their air and killing them and himself just like Zaheer did to kill The Earth Queen.
Same I thought we’d finally see that epic scene in live action. D: He could have defeated them but then Sozin came in and finished the job.
While I agree that is a dope theory and definitely fits Gyatso’s end I think it’s important they called attention to the fact that Sozin wouldn’t have won if it weren’t for the comet, also in this case it was impossible for Gyatso to pull off that move considering there were air nation children in the room
All in all...I'm of the opinion that they shouldn't have veered off the original like that🙄

Honestly opening with that scene really makes me understand why they couldn't just make Aang so so goofy. Seeing that attack and the effects of fire to the body and the reminder that EVERYONE died including children, really grounded the show for me.

I appreciate all of the backstory being shown rather than just told during exposition. We get to see the scared look in Aang's face when he's told that he's to be the avatar. And we get enough time to actually connect with Gyatso and his people before they're taken from us
Sokka is surprisingly great in this.
I really like Gysto’s performance here. I think they did a really good job translating that character. Sokka and Zuko are standouts as well. I can tell the actor for Aang is still young but he’s got some chops just needs to season them a little more lol
I like how they show how strong the airbenders are. To me, they have to be the most powerful out of all the benders in my eyes. The fight in the air temple invasion was so beastly done, wow. I also like how they showed aang floating/flying/levitating as a new thing. That was super cool to see

I was crying so much during the genocide of the air nomads. They meant the world to Aang. They really made fire benders extremely ruthless in this. I finished the season, I really do believe there’s a potential for a season 2!

I actually really liked the first ep! I see many people hating it already but i don´t think it was that bad - ofc nothing is better than the original. But i think it´s already much better than the movie made in 2010.
The attack at the air nation was done amazing. Also, in my personal opinion, if there was no comet making firebenders stronger, airbenders would totally eat them up in that fight.
Just because it wasn't that bad, doesn't mean it should equate to must watch, good, great or epic. Nor should derive automatic praise and be devoid criticism. Simply because it isn't that atrocious movie or it's not one for one remake(I never expect that given how horrible most are, nor did I demand that. It's all about the performance, line direction and progression that's suppose to come after natural). So far imo it's a 6.5/10. The dialogue is stiff and I'll paced within a simple conversation, exposition is never going to be compelling when not done without tact and it's rampant throughout episode 1. For story beats that are supposed to have room to breath, they sure sped up early plot points that were used to solidify who you are following their dynamics and why you should go on this journey with them. If I wasn't already a fan of the animations, I wouldn't be surprised if many NEW viewers saw this live action as meh, dropped it and never looked back. From what I've seen(two episodes)

If we are gunna base it being good off simply being better than the M Night one it's obviously going to pass. That bar is so low a bunch of highschoolers with the drama class prop closet and a 30 dollar budget would pass.

It grew on me slowly. Zuko is very good, and I like Katara's actress as well. I think it was the right decision to do things differently to the OG show, as it makes comparisons less harsh.

Just an FYI, but in the animated series when they escaped Zuko in the beginning, it was both Zuko and Iroh doing the fire blast and Aang blocked it with his air bending, but for some reason they had Katara who I think was too far away from the water block Zuko’s lone fire blast.
I also didnt like that scene. She had also barely been able to waterbend earlier in the same episode. Not enough time for her to randomly be that good all the sudden
I’m cautiously optimistic about this adaptation and am personally relieved to not be getting a scene by scene remake of the animated show. The original will always be there for me to revisit and I do appreciate the additions they made in this first episode. Is there some cringy acting and cgi…yes, yes there is but nothing ruins anything for me. Zuko is my favorite of the core four and, unfortunately, Katara the weakest for me but I’m really hoping the writing for her turns things around because I adore her look and the overall feel she brings. I don’t feel like binging this like I did with ONE PIECE but I will be finishing it with my son (we watched the animated version together too). My baseline was “please just be better than THAT movie” and it has well surpassed that for me 😂😂 granted, a very low bar to clear but they really could have messed this up horrifically and of what I’ve seen there is a homage to the original and the spirit is there.
Sozen just drop the "No Russian" vibe from Call of Duty mission 😂

I’m enjoying it so far, though I am kinda bummed out that the action is a bit cutty for my liking. Wish they were filmed like Shang-Chi fight scenes, but the action and bending are good enough.
Sadly you only get Shang-Chi and John Wick style fight scenes when EVERY SINGLE actor portrayed is a top-tier martial artist. Just one actor a little below that standard means editing needs to come in with cuts to make the action more seemless or else it looks like "play fighting". Just a sad logistic to choreography.
I think only the Sokka and Zuko actors actually had prior martial arts training so the other main characters are all learning as they go.
@@johnathancooper5753 That as well. However, I think fewer cuts would’ve worked since I thought the actors weren’t that bad at adapting fight movements. Netflix’s One Piece, although different from ATLA, had a few longer shots with most of the actors not being pro martial artists (besides Mackenyu as Zoro), yet it still worked. But I guess if the actors can’t sell it yet, it makes sense to hide it with cuts, unfortunately.

As someone who was watched the whole show it was way better than I expected. The show keeps faithful to the original were necessary while also adding great new elements to it that the original series didn't have. I think it's important to remember this is not meant to be a complete replica of the original just an adaptation. There are genuinely things I like better about this series than the original and some things I like in the original but overall I enjoyed the it. I really enjoyed that the tone feels like if the original series didn't have to be made for kids on nickelodeon.

First time I’ve watched a reaction with Olivia in it and she’s funny as hell.
the looks of it to me personally are great. the visuals, the characters.. the fight scenes, omg the way they did the elemental fight scenes looks so good in this episode. but the sounds.. because i grew up with this show hearing the characters differently, they're just not hitting the same y'know. now that's not to say i think they're doing a bad job, cz honestly i dont even know myself cz i'm beyond biased. i'm trying to be objective but i'm so biased... Zuko though..!! yoh that kid gave me chills..!! he is so Zuko to me it's actually insane..! wow... and by the sounds i'm not talking about the voices being different no. obviously the voices are gonna be different cz these are different actors, with different voices.. no i mean that.. ugh how do i explain this- i'm not really feeling the characters in the way they sound. the way i'm used to feeling them y'know. ugh, i don't know if i'm even making any sense, but that's just my heavily biased opinion on the thing. maybe i'll get used to it. but Zuko.. favourite then, favourite now. oh and Aang too. that kid is also good (again, not saying the others are bad.. just personal preferences). really gives me his own Aang vibes.

9:47 now that is something i wanted the cartoon to always do. a heartfelt speech and hug. waited 19 years for this.
Props to Greg's wife for a commendable, raw reaction with candid analysis/outro which often hit nail on the head (e.g. working with kids and knowing how they communicate). I frequent this channel for years, but first time seeing the lady of the house. We are honored and blessed to witness Queen's presence. Wishing Greg and wifey continued happiness despite any challenges. Remember... detaching from ego, putting spouse above self, are one of the recipes for a lasting loving marriage.

I binged the whole thing this morning, and all I’ll say is, they weren’t lying when they said they made avatar. That was avatar.
Didn't expect the fire propulsion to make firebenders fly to look awesome in live action. Yes I'm aware that a certain live action comic book movies have featured this before, but still.

100% agreed on the fight cinematography and choreography. I think the choreography is excellent but sometimes the camera is cutting too much or too quickly and I can’t really fully see what’s going on or be completely immersed in it
After watching several reactions after my first viewing, I’m pretty sure they have Aang “fly” because he’s so much more powerful of an airbender than any other airbender. That’s why the other Air Nomads look up to watch him descend. It’s not something everyone can do. Otherwise it would be no different than someone walking. And when’s the last time you stopped to watch someone walk down the street?

Don’t you remember the cartoon, Greg? Just like when determining who the new Dalai Lama is, a selection of objects, vast in number, are placed before the candidate. Only a few actually belong to Lama’s (Avatars) of the past. If the candidate chooses the correct items from their past, is it a sign of reincarnation and who they truly are.

It kinda kind of weird that Aang just flies around without a Glider because he usually can just hop and land softly and Zuko’s scar sucks, his eye should be scorched darker and squinted

the airtemple raid was nice fire nation powered by the meteor decimating air monks and the last stand was a nice touch shows how they fought

Cannot decide if the scene in Sozin's throne room is worse or the one with the air nomad council. In the first we switch from the villain gloating trope to the as you know trope but then again the line of the councilman isn't just another as you know trope but also in its delivery completely wooden and out of touch. I wish they would have cut the council scene and I guess this one was added to hammer home what the air nomads know.

So for those wondering they sideline Roku, give his posession scene to Kyoshi, and butcher characterization making him the FUNNY UNCLE type vs the calm, poised, kind yet stern father figure in the animated one. He also tells Aang "friendship can be a liability." THE SAME MAN who says "some friendships are so strong, they can even trascend lifetimes."

He’s not flying, he’s using a boost from air bending
The important difference is that Aang is simply using air to propel himself into the air while 'true' flight is achieved by becoming weightless so that you are no longer attracted by the gravity of Earth and can freely float within its atmosphere.
Actually Airbenders can fly. Look at Zaheer for example
