My favorite part about RCT was watching the individual guests. If you stalk one of them for long enough, eventually you'll see the thought "I feel like someone's watching me." appear.
If you rename a guest to "Chris Sawyer" they start taking pictures of the rides

One thing Gabi missed or only hinted on, The timelessness of RCT is also in large part due to it being built in assembly. It's ridiculously difficult to play a LOT of old pc games. The fact that you can boot up RCT or RCT2 on modern machines is again a testament to how well it's built.

Xennial here. Interesting that you mentioned RCT predating The Sims, because RCT was actually a relative latecomer to the construction-management simulation genre of computer games that originally began with Utopia (1982) by Intellivision and then popularized by SimCity (1989) from Maxis (Will Wright). Simulation games then branched out into multiple sub-genres, including city-building games (Caesar, The Settlers, the Anno series), business/economy simulation games (Theme Park, Capitalism, Railroad Tycoon), and government/politics simulation games (Tropico, Civilization). Many of these games ran on MS-DOS or older Macintosh machines. The Sims, however, was part of the larger Sim game series (incl. SimCity2000, SimEarth, SimPark, SimLife, SimFarm, SimCoaster, SimGolf, to name a few) that applied the notion of a virtual dollhouse to the simulation genre, a relatively novel idea for gaming in Y2K.

The explanation of Assembly at 5:15 offers a really great intuition of what a nightmare it must have been to singlehandedly create these two games.
i tried to learn lua like two times and when i saw the assembly code i was flabbergasted
@@cometisV2 Yeah, I went into a CS degree knowing Lua from Gmod and HTML from MySpace. That was it. I quickly got overwhelmed by topics like ASM and would not recommend the approach lol
There were a lot of old games that were programmed in various types of assembly. Once the core functionality of the instruction set was understood, the main tactic is to custom build routines that allow for abstraction just like in higher level languages and build up from there. That way instead of writing 15 lines of code every time he wanted to print a message to the player, he just wrote one custom routine that could display any message sent to it. It isn't easy, but with the right planning it's not as torturous as it sounds to make an assembly game. Planning out the functionality of the code beforehand is probably harder than actually writing it.
@@coolbrotherf127 Back in the ZX Spectrum days games would say "WRITTTEN IN ASSEMBLY" on the box because BASIC is obviously efficient or close to the hardware. Really important on an 8bit computer. All NES games are pure assembly.
But you can put Assembly into C in order to create efficiencies. In the 90's resources were limited so Assembly is a must and if you simply push 'compile' to make it ready to use as a program, you are going to get mixed results.
As a programmer, I really appreciated you going into the actually development of the game. You did a good job covering the topic ❤ You make programming sound somewhat cool (RARE)
As someone who has a degree in Computer Science, I know just enough about Assembly to know that’s a madlad move to build your game in.

Chris Sawyer did go on to make Chris Sawyer's Locomotion released in 2004 again in assembly, and then took a long break until being involved in mobile ports of Transport and Rollercoaster Tycoon games in 2013-2016 (although he wasn't the sole developer on the mobile ports). Btw I'm pretty sure if this video was made ten years ago, the one press image and his cameo on the Transport Tycoon box art would have been the only two pictures of him on the internet. Very super private person.
Well really if you want to go even further back, Sim City was the first of this kinda omniscient, chill, planning and destroying game. Great video as always, Gabi!
I can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find this 😢 RCT was modeled after Sim City in basically every possible way. Exact same formula, but with theme parks instead of cities. I felt my age when Gabi thought this was an original idea back then... And that Sims was the first Sim title 💀
Her mind would have been blown if she discovered Sim City as a kid. I feel like she'd enjoy building a thriving metropolis and then unleashing a few tornados on it.
Came here to say this, even though it's 5 months later. I had Sim City 2000 way before Roller Coaster Tycoon. That was the real OG.

Apparently one of the craziest things with Rollercoaster Tycoon is that it was almost entirely made in assembly just so that the game could accurately compute the people and economy efficiently enough to be played. It’s apparently pretty optimized in that respect.

After my first year of high school, my mom had me (forced) volunteer to go for a month-long STEM and coding program at the NJIT in Newark...some of it was HELL (learning the coding, video gaming programming, even SAT prep bit) but the rest was nice (making new friends, going on interesting field trips, even a few parties). I got a few certificates from the program, and while I never intend to pursue this kind of career, I respect people who actually are good at this and want to accomplish having a career like that.

I genuinely think it's insane for any developer to be against modding. Like, a healthy modding community is the main thing that can turn a good game into something immortal. I'm certain that if Microsoft or Mojang were to ever drop support for Minecraft, it would still continue to live on forever through projects similar to OpenRCT2.
Rollercoaster Tycoon is legit one of my absolute favorite games of all time. I have it on steam (and all the sequels), but I also have my original disc copy of the game. I actually have multiple disc copies of the game and of the rest of the series. I recently got a copy of the 3rd game that has a REALLY nice physical manual with it. Love the vid Gabi!
Can't remember the last time I was this excited to see a new upload. I have such great memories playing RTC (particularly sending the rollercoasters off the tracks and watching them explode).

I remember my friend showing me this game back in 2000, I was instantly hooked on watching him play 🙄 a years later, and we finally got a computer, and the first game I wanted to play was Rollercoaster Tycoon. Spent hours and hours playing. One day, my disc drive was over working, and I heard something popped. As a kid, I didn't think much of it when I heard it and kept playing until 2 mins later, my game froze. I opened the disc drive, and the disc was shattered. I was upset, but since this was in the 2000s, I went outside with my friends and forgot all about the game 😅 and now I can play the Rollercoaster Tycoon on my phone!! How times have changed.
I love videos like this, where people just rant about stuff they like. Excellent

My favorite fact about it is that it was coded in assembly, which is almost making a game in binary

Please I absolutely ADORE RCT. This and Zoo Tycoon and their sequels were my entire childhood. I remember staying up all night just to play these games, to the point where I saw the game every time I closed my eyes LOL.
Not sure why I talk about this in past-tense, as I STILL do these things lmao. Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic is, in my opinion, the best modern way to experience this game for anyone who hasn't tried it before. There was a game like this, it was called Transport Tycoon, made by the same guy in 1994. It was similarly adictive. I like roller coaster better because it was level based and you had a goal and ofc the individual guests and employees :D, where as in transport tycoon it was more about your one map and going through times and upgrading your infrastructure.
